Michigan baseball blasts Ohio State, 23-1, on Saturday

Michigan baseball blasts Ohio State, 23-1, on Saturday That's a BIG Rivalary Win! Our largest victory over OSU in program history! #GoBlue — Michigan Baseball (@umichbaseball) May 3, 2025 Just like football. Michigan baseball hasn't had a lot of rivalry challenges thus far, only having a series and a one-off with Michigan State, and the Wolverines have won all four of those contests. The maize and blue were set to take on rival Ohio State on Friday night, but that opening contest of the four-game series was postponed, and Saturday's game was on with the weather clear. And the Wolverines blasted the Buckeyes in spectacular fashion. Behind a big fourth inning, Michigan baseball posted what looks closer to a football score than a baseball one. The Wolverines scored 16 runs in the fourth inning, with four hits, eight walks, and five players being hit by a pitch. Ultimately, the maize and blue took the first game against the scarlet and grey, 23-1. Infielder Cole Caruso was the player of the game, having gone 3-for-4 with four RBIs. The Wolverines won this contest with only one home run, courtesy of right fielder Robert Hamchuk. Michigan had 13 hits, including five doubles, but also left nine runners on base. Pitcher Kurt Barr went five innings and allowed three hits while striking out four. The Buckeye pitchers ended up hitting six Wolverines over the course of the game.

QB Brady Smigiel commits, Michigan football lands four-star for 2026

As Michigan football players hear their name called in the 2025 NFL Draft, the program may have just landed a quarterback who could hear his name called in the future. Brady Smigiel, a four-star class of 2026 quarterback from Newbury Park, California, has pledged to join the Wolverines, he announced on social media with a short and simple message in the early afternoon on April 26. Advertisement "All Glory to God — Go Blue! #committed," Smigiel wrote. This came just minutes after coach Sherrone Moore posted on social media "YesSir #GoBlue" with a pair of eyeball emojis. New offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey also chimed in, celebrating the commitment, the first he has secured as a member of the Michigan staff. Smigiel is ranked the No. 7 quarterback in the nation, the No. 12 player in California and the No. 80 overall player in the class of 2026, according to 247 Sports' composite rankings. Smigel was previously committed to Florida State, but when he decommitted in late January and reopened himself to the process, U-M pounced. "Smigiel is a big, strong armed pocket passer who has put up huge numbers since his freshman season," wrote 247 Sports national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins. "At the recent Under Armour Next Camp in SoCal, he had a very strong showing, with a tightened release and his usual trademark accuracy to all three levels of the field. "He's very accurate down the field, knows how to change speeds and throws with really nice touch but can put plenty of heat on his throws when he needs to." Of course, the Wolverines have a star quarterback in the fold in Bryce Underwood who is entering his true freshman season and is expected to be the face of the program through at least through the 2027 season. Advertisement Still, that didn't prevent Smigiel from joining U-M and Lindsey's offense, which showed in the spring game April 19 that it will look to attack vertically downfield — a dream for passers and something not previously seen in Ann Arbor. "He's a tough kid, will stand in and take a shot and not flinch," Biggins continued. "Great natural leader, locker room guy and teammate. Very high football lQ, dad is his coach so he has been around the game and has a good natural feel for playing the position. "Has decent pocket mobility, not a great runner but can buy time and is good making throws outside the pocket. Projects as a high major Power 4 prospect with Sunday potential." The 6-foot-5, 210-pound prospect is a true pocket passer and now the highest rated recruit in U-M's class of 2026, joining four-star cornerback Brody Jennings (Jacksonville, Florida), four-star offensive lineman Bear McWhorter (Cartersville, Georgia) and three-star wide receiver Jaylen Pile (Dallas). Newbury Park High quarterback Brady Smigiel is Ventura County Star All-County Football Offensive Player of the Year on Friday, Dec. 8, 2023. 5-star Michigan QB Bryce Underwood said he told LeBron James that 'it's over' for Ohio State

Five-star Michigan QB Bryce Underwood isn't afraid to already start talking trash about Ohio State. Even to LeBron James. In an appearance on the 'Rich Eisen Show,' the Michigan native said that he met James recently in Los Angeles. He was at a Lakers-Clippers game because he shares the same agency as Clippers guard James Harden and waited after the game in the players' parking garage for James. Underwood told Eisen on Wednesday that he wasn't sure what he was going to say to James at first, but then he made sure to bring up the rivalry to the noted Buckeyes fan. 'It's over for Ohio State,' Underwood said he told James, before saying that James had laughed off his comment. The message from new @umichfootball QB @BryceUnderwoo16 when he met longtime OSU fan @KingJames last week — 'it's over':#GoBlue — Rich Eisen Show (@RichEisenShow) March 13, 2025 Underwood had been committed to LSU before flipping to Michigan and signing with the Wolverines in the early signing period. Underwood, who was coached in high school by Connor Stalions, enrolled early at Michigan so he could participate in spring practice ahead of his freshman season after he was the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2025 according to Rivals. Underwood's recruitment was a massive deal for Michigan after the Wolverines' offense sputtered in 2024 thanks to porous quarterback play. J.J. McCarthy turned himself into a first-round pick as Michigan won the national title during the 2023 season. But Michigan's inability to find a capable successor to McCarthy in 2024 quashed any chances of a repeat. The Wolverines did end the season with wins over Ohio State and Alabama, though the Buckeyes went on to win the national title themselves. In addition to telling James that Michigan was going to continue to have the upper hand over Ohio State, Underwood isn't also afraid of setting high goals for himself, either. 'A couple Heismans and at least one [national championship],' Underwood said when asked what his legacy would be at Michigan.

Big Ten men's Bracketology: Purdue is the cream of the crop

The deeper we get into Big Ten conference play, the more we are seeing the importance of experience and continuity. These are the dog days of the season, far enough into the season that the physical toll is setting in but far enough from the end that the adrenaline boost of postseason play has not kicked in. RELATED: Auburn edges Alabama atop AP Top 25 despite loss, Duke and Florida tied at No. 3; UConn drops out With that in mind, it is no surprise that the two-time reigning regular season champions of the conference, the Purdue Boilermakers, are the team that is rising above the pack. While other contenders around it drop games due to inconsistency, Purdue fittingly chugs along like a locomotive. The question now is if anyone can catch up before March. Here is a look at where teams stack up for their NCAA tournament prospects at this point in the year: This week's schedule: at Michigan Tue. (Peacock), vs. Wisconsin Smith is the straw that stirs the Purdue drink, and that is why he is a contender for national player of the year. The second-leading assist man in the country is also capable of dominating the game as a scorer, as he showed in a 31-point outing against Iowa on Tuesday. This week's schedule: vs. Indiana Tue. (Peacock), at Illinois Spartans took it on the chin with two close losses on their L.A. road trip, but they got back in the win column at home Saturday against Oregon. After allowing 50 first-half points, the Spartans clamped down with a 50-24 margin in the second frame. Jase Richardson made the case for increased minutes with 29 points on 9-of-13 shooting. This week's schedule: at Purdue Badgers are riding a tidy three-game winning streak, all coming against teams not projected to make the NCAA tournament (at Northwestern, vs. Indiana, at Iowa). Things get a lot tougher now; their next five games will see them travel to Purdue and Michigan State and host Illinois and Oregon. They do have all week to prep for the Boilermakers, though. This week's schedule: vs. Purdue Tue. (Peacock), at Ohio State Wolverines have won four close games in a row and next get a chance to avenge their most recent loss: a 27-point spanking at the hands of Purdue in West Lafayette at the end of January. When you have 7-footers like Danny Wolf making moves like this, you have a team that can hang with anyone and bring the entertainment juice. 7-FOOTER STEP BACK THREE #GoBlue | : @BigTenNetwork — Michigan Men's Basketball (@umichbball) February 5, 2025 This week's schedule: at Nebraska Thu., vs. Iowa State ended the Terps' win streak at four on Thursday, but Maryland bounced back with a solid home win against a talented Rutgers team on Sunday. The Terrapins still have not lost a game by more than six points, and their only home loss of the season came to a ranked Marquette team back in November. This week's schedule: vs. UCLA Tue. (Peacock), vs. Michigan State has not done itself any favors during this 4-5 stretch. Losses to Michigan State and Maryland are acceptable, but dropping the USC, Nebraska and Rutgers matchups will hurt come Selection Sunday. The Illini will have to dig deep given that six of their final seven games are against teams currently in the top 25 of the NET rankings. This week's schedule: at Illinois Tue. (Peacock), at Indiana Bruins are the Big Ten's hottest team right now, with a win streak that has reached seven games and features resume-altering close wins over Wisconsin and Michigan State. With four of its final seven games coming against non-tournament teams, UCLA has the opportunity to build an impressive body of work entering postseason play. This week's schedule: vs. Northwestern Tue., vs. Rutgers hits keep coming for the Ducks, who blew a chance to stop their skid by allowing Michigan State to dominate the second half Saturday. Oregon only plays one projected tournament team the rest of the way (at Wisconsin Feb. 22), so it has the chance to stack wins and put this concerning stretch in the rearview mirror. This week's schedule: vs. Washington Wed., vs. Michigan losing to Nebraska on Sunday, the Buckeyes are just 14-10 overall and have a losing record in the Big Ten. That they are still viewed as a tournament team is evidence of this conference's depth of quality. Ohio State has four more opportunities to add wins to their 5-7 Quadrant 1 record. This week's schedule: vs. Maryland Thu., at Northwestern Cornhuskers ride their four-game winning streak into a final spot in the field, which feels like a minor miracle after the team lost six straight games in January. That four-game push includes three wins over projected tournament teams, which shows Nebraska is rounding into form at the best time.
