Struthers putting businesses in the limelight
STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) – The City of Struthers is making sure its businesses are in the limelight, Starting a new program to share stories from each spot across town.
'We're trying to bring recognition to what we have here and how special it is to the community,' said Mayor Catherine Cercone Miller.
It sounds simple enough, but once the city got the ball rolling on its Business Spotlight series, they've had no problem pinning down who's up next.
'We've done three so far, and I can't believe the amount of things that I've learned,' Miller said.
The city began shooting short 1-3 minute videos on various businesses across town, releasing two each month and scheduling out 15 more over the course of the rest of the year.
'The word of mouth here just travels so quickly that something can be very successful and as long as it's a good running company, it's going to be taken care of here in Struthers,' said Ryan Goist, Business Spotlight director.
Goist is the man behind the camera helping produce the content. And it's taking off, with more and more businesses coming forward who want to share the spotlight and show Struthers what they're all about.
'More people should see that and want to start businesses here in Struthers Ohio, see the community that will support them,' Goist said.
The idea came to light with the help of an intern in the mayor's office last year— Andrew Garchar– who wanted to leverage social media to connect his town of 10,000 to commerce around town.
'He kept telling us every day more people need to know about this. More people need to know about what's going on in the city,' Miller said.
But it's also given the city a chance to get to know its business community on its turf, opening a direct line of communication with each place they stop.
'It's going to their environment and learning and seeing firsthand what they're dealing with,' Miller said.
Whether they employ one or hundreds, they want to hear from them all, sharing the story of each shop, store and business of Struthers.
'We're hoping that that even draws other businesses to come to Struthers because look what we're trying to do,' Miller said.
