Everything to know about ‘The Devil Wears Prada' sequel: Official release date set for May 1, 2026

Fans of the iconic 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada have long hoped for a sequel, and now the wait is officially on. The studio has confirmed that The Devil Wears Prada 2 will hit theaters on May 1, 2026 — less than a year away, even though the full cast lineup has yet to be officially announced. The original film, adapted from Lauren Weisberger's bestselling novel of the same name, remains a beloved staple in pop culture. Meryl Streep stars as the formidable fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly, alongside Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, the ambitious young assistant navigating the ruthless world of fashion. Emily Blunt's scheming assistant Emily Charlton and Stanley Tucci's portrayal of Nigel, Miranda's trusted confidant, rounded out the cast. More from GoldDerby Cannes 2025 wrap: 'Sentimental Value,' Jennifer Lawrence, June Squibb, and the 2026 Oscar contenders to know 'Ren Faire' director Lance Oppenheim on the corrupting influence of power and accidentally capturing 'America in miniature' How Eddie Redmayne crafted his 'deeply unflappable' assassin on 'The Day of the Jackal' The film was not only a critical and commercial success but also earned several accolades, including Streep's Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe win for Best Actress for her role as Miranda and an Oscar bid for Best Costume Design; the film also garnered Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical, and Best Supporting Actress for Blunt. The Devil Wears Prada was also a major box-office hit, grossing $326 million (with a modest budget estimated at $35 million to $40 million). Rumors of a sequel have swirled for years, but momentum picked up significantly in mid-2024. In July, reports confirmed that a follow-up was officially in development, with Aline Brosh McKenna returning to write the screenplay. Producer Wendy Finerman and director David Frankel, who were instrumental in crafting the original film, are also in talks to return for the sequel, according to Deadline. While Streep and Blunt were reported last year to be reprising their roles, no official cast announcements have yet been made. Supposedly the new film checks in with Streep's Priestly, who still runs the fashion magazine 'Runway,' but now has to navigate a brave new world of online publishing and social media influencers. Tucci recently shared his enthusiasm about the project in an interview with Variety, saying, 'I know they're working on it. If it happens, I would be so happy, but I cannot give you any information. Otherwise, I'll go to the actor's prison or something. [The original] was one of the best experiences ever.' Best of GoldDerby John C.
