Golden Harvest Food Bank, Summer Harvest Program
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – A big question for many local school kids this summer is where they will get their food. Many of them face hunger during the summer months. One out of every four children in Golden Harvest's service area are experiencing hunger, and the Summer Harvest Meal Program helps these families when the kids are not in school. 'Just imagine the fear of being a parent and trying to figure out how to put food on the table for your children, and that's a reality for one and four children in our area,' said Abby Muehlfeld, Vice President of Marketing, Golden Harvest Food Bank. This is the second year Golden Harvest has provided the summer harvest program. Since children are not receiving the school meals they typically receive during the school year, Golden Harvest has put together boxes of shelf-stable food, meat, and produce options for families with children under the age of 18. 'It's an honor to be able to serve this way, and we couldn't do it without the support of our community and our volunteers, and our volunteers are really the heartbeat of our mission,' said Muehlfeld With some families having to make decisions between food, medication, rent, or childcare – Golden Harvest wants to help where it can. 'Prices are just a lot higher than they used to be, and a lot of people's salaries are not increased in the same way. So, families who are already struggling are struggling even more. And these are families that are working multiple jobs just trying to make ends meet,' said Muehlfeld If you and your kids want to volunteer, there are different ways you can help. 'We have our urban farm in downtown Augusta. We actually have Sprout Scouts going on right now, where kids can come and work on the urban farm, and the food goes into the Master's Table Soup Kitchen. We also have kids came and they sort and pack food items, donated food items. As well as helping with the summer harvest program packing those bags. And it's so hearting to see kids coming in helping other kids,' said Muehlfeld Golden Harvest is always looking for volunteers, so if you would like to volunteer, you can find out how Golden Harvest Food Banks website.
