Goldin bets on pop culture with acquisition of Studio Auctions
Goldin Auctions has acquired Studio Auctions in an effort to expand its Hollywood and entertainment offerings, Goldin announced Friday. This is the first major acquisition for Goldin since it began operating under the eBay umbrella in May 2024. 'At Goldin, we've built our name on bringing the most extraordinary pieces to market — and doing it with authenticity collectors can trust,' founder and CEO Ken Goldin said in a statement. 'This acquisition lets us go even bigger in entertainment and pop culture, and deliver exactly what passionate collectors are after.' Advertisement Goldin, founded in 2012 by Ken Goldin, has been best known as a sports-oriented auction house, among the leaders in cards and memorabilia and boasting record sales including the most expensive baseball ever sold ($4.39 million for Shohei Ohtani's 50th home-run ball) and the most expensive Michael Jordan card ever sold ($2.9 million). However, recently the company has made strides to introduce more pop-culture pieces into its sales, finding headline-grabbing success with the sale of the most expensive toy ever sold, a rocket-firing Boba Fett, which fetched $1.34 million last year. Studio Auctions has focused on items including rare movie props in the past, recording notable sales such as the more than $100,000 paid for a wand used by Glinda in 'Wizard of Oz.' The acquisition kicks off with Goldin's 'Hollywood Props & Memorabilia Auction,' highlighted by the whip used by Indiana Jones in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' a Stormtrooper helmet from 'Rogue One' and Daniel Radcliffe's first signature wand from the first two 'Harry Potter' films. Caitlin Clark sets record for any SLAM magazine cover at nearly $5k
The Caitlin Clark cover is one of just a few to be graded CGC 9.9. (Credit: Goldin Auctions) When Caitlin Clark first graced the cover of SLAM in her Iowa Hawkeyes jersey in April 2024, the headline read, 'The Legend of Caitlin Clark Is Just Beginning.' More than a year later, that proclamation could not be more true, both on the hardwood and in the collectible world. Advertisement The single-highest graded copy of that magazine (CGC 9.9) sold Saturday at Goldin Auctions for a record $4,819, the most ever paid for a copy of SLAM. It's one of around 10 SLAM magazines ever given a CGC 9.9. CGC has graded more than 250 copies of the Clark debut magazine total, including more than 150 at CGC 9.8. Debut magazines are highly coveted among collectors, with athletes' first Sports Illustrated covers often acting as an approximate for a sort of magazine rookie card. Michael Jordan's first Sports Illustrated sold for a record $126,000. SLAM is generally far less valuable, though as the brand has sought to become more collectible in recent years, even issuing numbered variants for some releases, prices on the secondary market have been rising. Advertisement Last month, Clark was once again placed on the cover of SLAM for the magazine's WNBA season preview, selling out of the 'gold metal' variant (numbered to 94 copies and priced at $94) nearly instantly. Clark was also recently featured on the June cover of Sports Illustrated along with Indiana Fever teammates Kelsey Mitchell, Aliyah Boston and DeWanna Bonner. Darius Garland rookie Logoman sells for record $44k
Darius Garland's 2019-20 Panini Flawless Rookie Logoman 1/1 sold Thursday night at Goldin Auctions for $43,920, nearly tripling the previous record for any Garland card at public auction. Prior to Thursday, the record for Garland was the $15,000 paid in 2022. The 25-year-old point guard averaged nearly 21 points and 7 assists this season as he helped lead the Cavaliers to the best record in the Eastern Conference. Despite his major role on one of the top teams in the league this season, Garland's card market has largely failed to impress at the high end, with nearly all of his top sales coming in 2023 or earlier. Garland's next highest sale other than the record-breaking Logoman from the past year came in February at $3,840.
