GolfSixes League debuts in India, paving the way for future champions
India got its first taste of the fast-paced GolfSixes format on Monday as young golfers from across the country competed in the inaugural GolfSixes League at DLF Golf and Country Club, just days before the Hero Indian Open. The event, a collaboration between The Indian Golf Union (IGU) and The R&A, is part of a broader initiative to introduce junior golfers to a dynamic, team-based version of the sport. Aimed at expanding the grassroots game in India, the format provides an engaging and competitive environment for children aged 12 and under. Six teams, each representing a different state, battled it out over six holes, showcasing both skill and sportsmanship. Punjab emerged victorious, while Haryana and Uttar Pradesh finished second and third, respectively. Designed by The R&A, in partnership with the Confederation of Professional Golf (CPG), the Ryder Cup European Development Trust (RCEDT), DP World Tour, and Ladies European Tour, the GolfSixes League has already made a mark in Europe, Africa, and other regions. Now, with its introduction to India, it is set to offer young golfers an exciting new pathway into the game. 'This initiative aligns perfectly with our goal of promoting golf and making it more accessible,' said IGU President Brijinder Singh. 'GolfSixes is an engaging and easy-to-understand format that is ideal for young players and beginners. We're excited to support its growth in India.' Neal Graham, Regional Development Manager – Middle East, Central Asia & India at The R&A, emphasized the format's impact on junior participation. 'GolfSixes League has proven to be a successful development tool, helping young golfers transition from practice to competitive play in a fun and inclusive environment. We hope to see similar growth in India as we have in other parts of the world.' With the backing of The R&A and the IGU's commitment to fostering young talent, GolfSixes League is set to become a key part of India's long-term golf development strategy.
