Fairhope High teacher is keeping history alive
FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WKRG) — Ginger Golson wants the juniors and seniors in her history class to go well beyond taking notes and memorizing dates. 'I have always been a history teacher and I have taught many, many history classes,' Golson said. 'But the classes I'm teaching now are fantastic because they really give students the ability to branch out into new areas and do a lot of work and research on their own in a topic that interests them.' Bayshore Christian teacher believes math may hold the keys to life lessons This class of juniors is focused on American history — right now they are studying the Cold War and President Richard Nixon. 'Oh my goodness, we're really trying to show kids that history is not settled — and we're looking at different perspectives and we're working to show that history is a current conversation, it's not something that should just be in the past,' Golson said. Golson has been teaching for 22 years — the last two years have been at Fairhope High School. And it didn't take her long to hit it off with students, including the one who nominated her for a Golden Apple. 'For our second half of our first semester, we were teacherless — we had a sub — but it was just very chaotic; we didn't know what we were doing,' senior Sierra Caldwell said. 'Ms. Golson came in, she set up order, and now we are right on track where we need to be and I have no fear of my history exam.' Our congratulations to Ginger Golson and Fairhope High School for a job well done. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
