USA TODAY and Yahoo may earn commission from links in this article. Pricing and availability subject to change. MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Real Madrid entered the FIFA Club World Cup as the favorites to win it all, but new coach Xabi Alonso warned fans before their opening match. The most popular soccer club in the world is in a state of transition. And they'll need their two other group stage matches to make something happen fast. Advertisement Real Madrid's Arda Güler missed a penalty kick in stoppage time, forcing them to settle for a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabian powerhouse Al-Hilal on Wednesday in the opening match for both clubs at Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Is a draw an upset? Al-Hilal was a heavy underdog (+475) and a draw had even longer odds (+650), while Real Madrid (-285) was a heavy favorite to win, according to BETMGM. Or did the unforgiving South Florida heat play a role in one of the surprising results in the first week of the Club World Cup? The 3 p.m. ET start, beaming sun, and temperatures above 90 degrees played a role in the match for the 62,415 fans in attendance, and the goal scorers. Real Madrid's Gonzalo García scored in the 34th minute, making the most of his opportunity starting in place of French World Cup champion Kylian Mbappe – sidelined with the fever. Al-Hilal's Rúben Neves scored a penalty kick in the 41st minute to tie the match before halftime. Advertisement As both clubs fired shots in the second half to steal the result, players began leaving the match as substitutes as the heat played a factor. Al-Hilal's Nasser Al-Dawsari dropped to the pitch after a stoppage in play, and FIFA medical officials trotted onto the field to treat him before he walked off on his own in the 76th minute. Shortly after, Neves laid on the pitch with a cramp as two teammates tried to help him stretch. He finished the match. Real Madrid star Vinicus Junior came off in the 80th minute, even though he played in the shade covering the south part of the pitch at Hard Rock Stadium. Advertisement And Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham came off in the 84th minute, although that may have been so Croatian Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric could come on to a rousing ovation from fans. Real Madrid's Trent Alexander-Arnold and Rodygo also came off in the 65th minute so backups could come on and help the effort. The biggest moment of the match was the penalty not secured by Real Madrid. Al-Hilal's Mohammed Al-Qahtani tried to box out Real Madrid's Fran García in the penalty area, but elbowed him. The penalty was awarded after VAR in the 90th minute. Güler was unable to convert. Real Madrid and Al-Hilal come away with a point each after their first Club World Cup match. 3️⃣ key talking points from Real Madrid's Club World Cup draw vs Al-Hilal
Real Madrid started their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium with a 1-1 draw against Al‑Hilal. The match marked the start of the Xabi Alonso era and featured several notable moments; from a sparkling counterattacking goal to late drama at both ends. Despite dominating possession, Madrid couldn't secure the win, setting up an intriguing group campaign. Advertisement Here are three talking points Real Madrid can take away from South Florida. 1. Alonso's debut & Alexander‑Arnold's arrival This was Alonso's first competitive match in charge, and the tactical approach felt familiar rather than revolutionary—a 4‑3‑3 without the intense pressing he preached. New signing Trent Alexander‑Arnold also made his much-anticipated debut, injecting creativity from the right flank. While Madrid had the bulk of possession and created plenty of chances after the break, they failed to be efficient in front of goal leaving critics questioning whether Alonso needs more time to stamp his identity on the team. 2. García's surprise impact In a bold move, Alonso handed a first senior start to 21‑year‑old forward Gonzalo García due to Kylian Mbappé missing out through illness. Advertisement The youngster rewarded that faith in the 34th minute with a slick counterattack goal—scoring with a double-touch finish set up by Rodrygo. That strike, his second for the senior side, established him as one of the club's youngest scorers in their first start—a milestone only surpassed by talents Jude Bellingham, Marco Asensio, and Dani Ceballos. Gonzalo's performance underlines the depth in Madrid's academy and could offer a reliable attacking option behind Mbappé for the 2025/26 season. 3. Penalty drama at both ends The match was punctuated by two pivotal penalty moments. Rúben Neves equalized for Al‑Hilal via a spot-kick just before halftime after a foul on Marcos Leonardo. Advertisement In stoppage time, Madrid were awarded a lifeline when Fede Valverde stepped up only to be denied by Al‑Hilal shot-stopper Yassine 'Bono' Bounou, whose save kept the draw intact. Bono's performance was a standout for the Saudi side, showcasing the tight margins during an upset result for Inzaghi's men. 📸 PATRICIA DE MELO MOREIRA - AFP or licensors

Real Madrid beats Leganes 3-2 to reach Copa semifinals on García's goal in stoppage time
Associated Press MADRID (AP) — Gonzalo García scored in stoppage time as Real Madrid avoided an upset by defeating Leganes 3-2 to reach the semifinals of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday. Madrid had taken a two-goal lead at halftime with Luka Modric and Endrick before the hosts rallied to even the match in the second half. The 20-year-old García, a striker who usually plays with Madrid's 'B' team, sealed the victory with a header three minutes into stoppage time after a cross by Brahim Díaz. Another setback would have been troublesome for Madrid after it lost 1-0 at Espanyol in the Spanish league on Saturday for its second defeat in 15 matches across all competitions. Madrid had needed extra time to eliminate Celta Vigo at home in the round of 16 of the Copa last month. Modric opened the scoring with a strike from close range in the 18th and Endrick doubled the lead after picking up a loose ball inside the area in the 25th. The hosts rallied with Juan Cruz converting a penalty kick in the 39th and finding the net with a shot that deflected on a defender in the 59th. Madrid nearly moved ahead again when Díaz's flick over the goalkeeper struck the crossbar in the 75th. Atletico Madrid had become the first team to reach the semifinals when it routed Getafe 5-0 at home on Tuesday with a pair of goals by Giuliano Simeone, the 22-year-old son of Atletico coach Diego Simeone. In the other two quarterfinals on Thursday, it will be Real Sociedad hosting Osasuna and Barcelona playing at Valencia. Madrid was depleted in defense because of recent injuries to Antonio Rüdiger and David Alaba. Éder Militão and Dani Carvajal had already been out with long-term ailments. Coach Carlo Ancelotti used youngsters Jacobo Ramón and Raúl Asencio as the central defenders, and improvised midfielder Federico Valverde in the right back position. Ancelotti also rested some regular starters ahead of the Spanish league derby against Atletico at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Saturday. Madrid leads Atletico by one point at the top of the standings. Madrid last won the Copa in 2022-23. It was eliminated by Atletico in the round of 16 last season. Leganes only made it to the Copa semifinals in 2017-18, when it was eliminated by Sevilla. It is winless in three matches in all competitions and sits in 16th place in the Spanish league. ___ AP soccer: in this topic
