Lizzo Says She Was Canceled Throughout Her Career
Obviously, you know Lizzo. It's not a stretch to say Lizzo's career has had its share of ups and downs over the last several years. Three years after her "About Damn Time" was the #1 song in the US, she recently returned with several singles that failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. More notably, Lizzo faced several lawsuits in 2023 for alleged sexual harassment and other claims, which she's since addressed publicly. (At least one of the lawsuits is still ongoing.) In a new episode of the Therapuss podcast, Lizzo contemplated her career at large and claimed that she's been "canceled" numerous times since becoming famous. 'I've been canceled a lot," she said. "I shouldn't say I've been canceled, because I'm still going, but I've gotten backlash a lot. Literally every single time I've received backlash I use it as a growing and learning lesson." In the interview, Lizzo also reflected on the backlash she faced after her song "Good As Hell" appeared in a Weight Watchers commercial in 2019, shortly after Oprah Winfrey bought the company. 'It was like, 'Oprah wants to use your song,' I lost my mind," she recalled feeling at the time. "I was like, 'Oh my god Oprah knows who I am!' I was like, 'Yes! Yes.'" 'I remember posting the commercial because I was so proud and everybody was like, 'You're fucking joking right, like this is promoting eating disorders. And I was like, 'Oh my god.' It broke my heart. It truly broke my heart.' If I may, for a moment: Being in the public eye seems miserable, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, really. That said! If you are appearing on a podcast talking about how you've been "canceled" — especially after you're still signed to a major label that releases your music, and you're booking promising film roles — I think it's well worth examining if being "canceled" is even a thing. Lizzo speaks out on getting 'canceled a lot' after she was sued in 2023 by her backup dancers
Lizzo has been making headlines of late for her incredible weight loss journey, but now she's opening up about being 'cancelled a lot.' The 37-year-old rapper (born Melissa Viviane Jefferson) broke through with her blockbuster single Truth Hurts in 2019, but she also made headlines for other reasons. Back in August 2023, she was sued by three former backup dancers, who alleged Lizzo created a hostile work environment. With her fifth album Love In Real Life getting ready to drop at some point this summer, the singer is opening up about her past, during her weight loss journey. She revealed on an episode of the Therapuss podcast that she's learning to find grace in certain situations. 'I've been cancelled a lot,' she said on the May 14 episode of Therapuss with Jake Shane,' adding, 'I shouldn't say I've been cancelled, because I'm still going, but I've gotten backlash a lot.' She added, 'Literally every single time I've received backlash I use it as a growing and learning lesson.' One of her first experiences in receiving backlash from fans was when she synced her hit Good as Hell to Weight Watchers, after Oprah Winfrey bought a stake in the company. She explained that at first she was thrilled, stating, 'It was like, "Oprah wants to use your song." I lost my mind. I was like, "Oh my god Oprah knows who I am!" I was like, "Yes! Yes."' However, after posting the Weight Watchers ad, she found many fans quickly turned on her. 'I remember posting the commercial because I was so proud and everybody was like, 'You're f--king joking right, like this is promoting eating disorders,'' she told Jake. 'And I was like, 'Oh my god.' It broke my heart. It truly broke my heart.'' She also opened up about being canceled back in October 2024, just a few months after she announced taking a year off of performing. 'I've been canceled for everything at this point. Only God can cancel me now,' the singer admitted last fall. 'I think that I talk about the things that are important to me, and I talk about the things that I can bring a difference to, and I think those are my boundaries now with the public,' she added. The performing hiatus came after the lawsuit was announced, with claims that the dancers were targets of sexual, religious and racial harassment. Lizzo said on social media at the time, 'These last few days have been gut-wrenchingly difficult and overwhelmingly disappointing. 'My work ethic, morals and respectfulness have been questioned. My character has been criticized.,' she added. It's unclear if Lizzo will be launching a new tour in support of her album once her performing hiatus comes to a close.

She then confessed, "That is low-key like a fantasy. Right? It's like a 'Book-Tok' dream to be like, 'Oh my God, like he was my best friend'". Lizzo and Wright confirmed their romance in April 2022, after Andy Cohen accidentally "outed" their relationship when she appeared on his radio show that month. Two months later, they made their red carpet debut at a 'For Your Consideration' event for her Watch Out for the Big Grrrls Amazon Prime Video reality. Months later, in a December 2022 interview on 'The Howard Stern Show', she spoke about the evolution of their relationship, saying that they're "not playing any games with each other anymore. We're very much locked in".

Stepping out in New York, the 37-year-old Good As Hell hitmaker looked amazing and full of confidence as she strutted her stuff down the street. 9 9 9 At the Amazon 2025 Upfronts, Lizzo could be seen showing off her svelte frame in an ultra short black miniskirt and a tight red corset. Donning blond hair and looking amazing in the process, Lizzo could be seen outside the event and on the red carpet. Smiling for the camera and oozing complete and utter confidence, the singing sensational looked slimmer than ever as she beamed. With the black mini skirt and red corset, she wore a t-shirt underneath and accessorized with bangles, rings, a necklace and some hoop earrings - all in silver hardware.
