San Diego County sends out voter pamphlets ahead of District 1 special general election

(Above: Earlier report on Good Morning San Diego following special primary election on April 20, 2025) SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — With the special general election for the first supervisorial district set to get underway, informational pamphlets about the election are making their way to the mailboxes of more than 370,000 registered voters in San Diego County this week. The pamphlets include important deadlines, statements from the candidates for District 1 county supervisor and more. Voters can see an online version of their pamphlet using the 'View Voter Information Pamphlet (Sample Ballot)' tool on the Registrar of Voters website. Voter info postcards mailed to District 1 residents for supervisor runoff Registered voters in District 1 are tasked with electing who will fill the seat left vacant on the county Board of Supervisors after Nora Vargas announced her desire to step down from her position late last year. Vargas officially left her post on Jan. 6. The elected supervisor would oversee matters pertaining to the first supervisorial district, which encompasses approximately 256 square miles of the county. District 1 stretches from the U.S.-Mexico border, Imperial Beach and National City to southern parts of the city of San Diego such as Barrio Logan, Logan Heights and Sherman Heights. It also includes areas east of Chula Vista such as Bonita, Otay Ranch and parts of Spring Valley. After a highly contentious primary election in April, the race for the District 1 seat continues between two South Bay leaders — Chula Vista Mayor John McCann and Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre. Early voting begins in person on Monday, June 2 at the Registrar of Voters office, located at 5600 Overland Ave. in Kearny Mesa. On the following day, June 3, voters may begin dropping off completed mail-in ballots throughout the district at more than two dozen drop boxes. A handful of vote centers across the county will open their doors to voters starting Saturday, June 21. On July 1, the final day of voting, 13 more vote centers will open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. A list of ballot drop boxes and vote centers can be found online. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Long-time SDUSD school board member launches bid for state schools head

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Richard Barrera, a long-standing member of the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education, has launched a bid to succeed Tony Thurmond as California's elected state superintendent. The role, which Thurmond will be termed out of next year, is charged with overseeing the state's K-12 public schools, shaping the conversation around education even as most policy changes are set forth by the governor and state legislature. Barrera is well-known in the SDUSD community, having served on the school board for nearly two decades. A progressive, he has a reputation of being a strong supporter for labor and has made it a point to emphasize listening to and supporting teachers. Bonta sends letter to Trump over Endangered Species Act 'I'm really very proud of the work that we've done in San Diego Unified over many years now,' Barrera said in a conversation with KUSI's Good Morning San Diego on Monday, pointing to San Diego's high rankings in the U.S. for reading and math, students' college readiness, and the district's ramped up efforts to modernize neglected facilities. 'I think we've come together as a community and created some really positive strategies that have had great outcomes for students,' he continued. 'I would like to bring that experience to local communities up and down California.' Barrera joins an already crowded field of more than a dozen candidates for the role, including former educators, and several current and former state legislators. As someone who has not worked in the classroom, Barrera is somewhat on the back foot compared to the educational bona fides and legislative stature of a number of the other candidates. However, having spent 17 years as a district-level decisionmaker, Barrera believes he would bring a new, localized perspective to the role in Sacramento. Thousands in San Diego protest cuts to federal education funds 'Most of the big decisions that affect students are made by local school boards and local districts. The work that's done in the legislature and by the governor, it's not that it's not important, but it's less important than the work that's done at the local level,' Barrera said. 'I believe I come with a lot of understanding about what local decisionmakers grapple with and what I want to do is help local decisionmakers build coalitions in their own communities in the way that we've built them in San Diego,' he continued. 'I think that's going to lead to better outcomes for kids throughout the state.' Watch Barrera's interview with KUSI on his state superintendent bid in the video player above. San Diego's historic Starlight Bowl one step closer to being ‘saved'

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The city of San Diego has officially selected a group to start negotiations on revitalizing the historic Starlight Bowl amphitheater in Balboa Park. The Starlight Bowl went dark in 2011 after the operator filed for bankruptcy. Now, more than a decade later, efforts to breathe life back into the open-air venue are moving forward. Last year, Mayor Todd Gloria announced the city would be taking proposals to renovate the Starlight Bowl and the Village Grill, a takeaway-style eatery also in Balboa Park which has been left vacant since 2017. After years of discussions, the nonprofit Save Starlight, which has led efforts to bring the 3,600-seat venue back to life, said it has been chosen by the city as the preferred party for lease negotiations regarding the amphitheater. In an appearance on Good Morning San Diego in the KUSI studio Monday, Carleton Overstreet Jr. said he couldn't believe the news. 'We're eager to begin this process. As a board and a community, we've been waiting for this moment for years,' Overstreet said. Overstreet described the organization's vision for the 90-year-old venue as an 'inclusive event space that promotes culture and art that represents San Diego and the global diaspora.' He added the Starlight Bowl will be an entertainment hub for local musicians, community organizations, school graduations and musicals. The Starlight Bowl was built in 1935 by the Ford Motor Company as a showcase for its vehicles. In the years that followed, the stage was graced by the performances of big names such as Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, Carlos Santana, Diana Ross, The Ramones, The Rolling Stones and more. 'That historic gem, the Starlight Bowl, will no longer be an eyesore,' Overstreet said. 'For all our community stakeholders that wrote in letters of support, which were included in our 170-page RFP application, thank you. We did this.' Now the next step is for Save Starlight to enter lease negotiations with the city. Watch the full interview with Carleton Overstreet Jr. above. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
