Pope Leo XIV at Regina Caeli: May we pray for vocations, live a life of service

Before leading the recitation of the Regina Caeli on Good Shepherd Sunday, Pope Leo XIV calls for prayers for vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life, while also "living in service to one another" so we can "walk in love and truth" on our life journey. May 12, 2025 By Thaddeus JonesBefore leading the recitation of the Regina Caeli prayer from the central loggia of Saint Peter's Basilica, Pope Leo XIV expressed his joy and offered his warm greetings to the estimated one hundred thousand pilgrims and visitors gathered in the square below. Good Shepherd Sunday Recalling that today marks Good Shepherd Sunday, Pope Leo XIV described it as "a gift from God" that he can celebrate on the first Sunday of his service as Bishop of Rome when the Gospel reading tells us about Jesus who reveals himself as the true Shepherd "who knows and loves his sheep and gives his life for them." World Day of Prayer for Vocations Today also marks the World Day of Prayer for Vocations and the final day of the Jubilee pilgrimage of members of bands and popular entertainment. Pope Leo greeted all with affection and thanked them for their music and performances that "enliven the feast of Christ the Good Shepherd: the One who guides the Church with his Holy Spirit." Helping one another Pope Leo then expressed his joy in being able to pray together with all the People of God for vocations, especially to the priesthood and consecrated life. He said the Church has "great need for them" as it does all of us who support them on their vocational journey so they can "find acceptance, listening and encouragement in their communities" and "credible models of generous dedication to God and to their brothers and sisters." Recalling Pope Francis' message for the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, he encouraged everyone to "welcome and accompany young people" while we ask God to help us all live "in service to one of helping one another to walk in love and truth." Do not be afraid! Adressing young people in particular regarding vocations, Pope Leo encouraged them saying, "Do not be afraid! Accept the invitation of the Church and of Christ the Lord!" 'May the Virgin Mary, whose entire life was a response to the Lord's call, always accompany us in following Jesus.'--Vatican News

Catholics gather for special Mass in Brooklyn following Pope Leo XIV election

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) — A wave of history and hope swept through Downtown Brooklyn as hundreds of faithful filled the Cathedral Basilica of St. James on Sunday morning. The occasion: a special Mass celebrated by Bishop Robert Brennan, just days after the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American ever chosen to lead the Roman Catholic Church. More Local News Hymns echoed through the cathedral's historic walls, setting a reverent tone for the service. Bishop Brennan, presiding over the congregation, reflected on the significance of this unprecedented moment for the global Catholic community. Preaching from the Book of Revelation 7, Bishop Brennan reminded worshippers of God's enduring promise: 'A part of that promise is that God will shepherd them, take them by the hand, lead them, wipe the tears from their eyes. Pope Leo used that same image in his first message to the world.' The Mass, held on Good Shepherd Sunday, was especially poignant as prayers were offered for Pope Leo XIV as he began his papacy. Bishop Brennan praised the new pope's missionary spirit and his American roots: 'I was thrilled to hear that he has roots in the United States, but more importantly, he's a missionary,' says Brennan. Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost of Chicago, was elected on May 8, 2025, becoming the first U.S.-born pontiff in the Church's history. His election has been met with excitement and optimism both in the United States and around the world. Many parishioners at the Cathedral Basilica of St. James expressed hope for the future of the Church under Pope Leo XIV. Luiza Nunes, a church member, shared, 'Every single day it's about our acts, and we're not saints, but it's a part of our choices every day. From what I read so far, I think he will do great for the community as well and continue to do the service that Pope Francis was doing.' More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State Candida Perez added, 'He's one of the first popes being American, and we expect him to do the right thing.' Bishop Brennan's homily echoed this spirit of unity and faith, emphasizing the new pope's message: 'He's got that message of unity, but on the reliance on God.' The Diocese of Brooklyn will continue its celebrations with a special Mass of Thanksgiving to honor the installation of Pope Leo XIV. The installation ceremony is scheduled for Monday, May 19th. It's Mother's Day, Good Shepherd Sunday, and it's the first Sunday since the Catholic church elected its new leader. That was on the minds of parishioners as they filed into Mass. Before the faithful gathered in Buckhead on Sunday, 100,000 of the faithful gathered in Saint Peter's Square in Rome. Pope Leo XIV stood before the multitudes for his first Regina Caeli message – that's Latin for 'queen of heaven.' He declared, 'Never again war!' 'That's what we all pray for, don't we?' John O'Brien, a Christ the King member, said. O'Brien appreciates that exhortation for world peace, and he's inspired by the pope's in-the-trenches service to people. He prays this new global shepherd can guide world leaders to put down their weapons. 'The war, crises (are) happening everywhere. We hope that stops. Christianity is known for peace, and we hope that he spreads that far and wide,' Opara said. Robert Francis Prevost is not just the first US-born pope, he also has creole roots in New Orleans, with grandparents described as Black or mulatto. Jackie Plaia says the pope can navigate a complex world. 'he seems like a real-world leader, and I love the fact that he speaks so many languages. He lived in Peru for so long, so he's worldly. I just think he'll be a really good leader to bring the world together.' Parishioners say the pope's diverse lineage is another attribute that makes him a unifying world leader.

I nothing lack if I am his, and he is mine forever. Where streams of living water flow, my ransomed soul he leadeth; and where the verdant pastures grow, with food celestial feedeth. Perverse and foolish, oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me; and on his shoulder gently laid, and home, rejoicing, brought me. In death's dark vale I fear no ill, with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me. Thou spreadst a table in my sight; thy unction grace bestoweth; and oh, what transport of delight from thy pure chalice floweth! Not for the lip of praise alone, Nor e'en the praising heart, I ask, but for a life made up Of praise in ev'ry part; Praise in the common things of life, Its goings out and in, Praise in each duty and each deed, However small and mean. Fill ev'ry part of me with praise; Let all my being speak Of thee and of they love, O Lord, Poor though I be, and weak. So shalt thou, Lord, from me, e'en me, Receive the glory due, And so shall I begin on earth The song for ever new. So shall no part of day or night From sacredness be free: But all my life, in ev'ry step, Be fellowship with thee.
