Kelly Miller Community Center hosts kids event celebrating Black History Month

CLARKSBURG, (WBOY) — The Kelly Miller Community Center and the Clarksburg Harrison Public Library hosted 'A Kid's Journey Through Black History' as part of their Black History Month celebration at the center on Friday. The event featured a reading of Goodnight Racism, a book about an African American child's realization of racism, as well as interactive activity stations, read-aloud sessions, and a question and answer discussion. Attendees also had the chance to win door prizes and enjoyed complimentary snacks and dinner. West Virginia school districts begin making up snow days in June Volunteer Program Director for the Kelly Miller Community Center Sherri James told 12 News why the event is so important. 'We think that it's important to make sure that kids understand what happened in the past so that as they grow and become adult humans that they understand that we are all equal and that we should all work together,' James said. 'It's not just about one race, we're all a human race.' James shared that engaging children in fun and exciting crafts and activities while teaching them about Black history is a meaningful way to celebrate Black History Month and highlight its importance. 'Check out the Clarksburg Harrison Public Library website, there are always fun educational things to do, and all of our stuff is free.' the Children's Librarian at the Clarksburg Harrison Public Library Erica Perry said.
