Goodyear Blimp turns 100 with unique triple-blimp celebration

The Brief June 3 marks 100 years since the first Goodyear Blimp flight. Since then, the blimps have become icons at games, races, airshows, and other big events. All 3 current blimps are back home for a three-day tour of Akron, Ohio to celebrate the milestone. AKRON, Ohio - When you hear the word "blimp," just one thing likely comes to mind: The Goodyear Blimp. That staple of bowl games and big races officially turns 100 years old on Tuesday. It was back on June 3, 1925 when Goodyear's first blimp, Pilgrim, floated into the sky not far from the company's headquarters in Akron, Ohio. Since then, there have been 31 Goodyear Blimps. Today's blimps are, in fact, not technically blimps, but rather semi-rigid airships, but they still use helium to stay afloat and have the same look, feel, and unique sound as their predecessors, along with the same purpose. RELATED: Newest Goodyear 'blimps' carry on legacy As anyone who grew up in Akron – or near another blimp base – can tell you, it's a special day when you see the blimp. This week, as part of the anniversary celebration, fans have a unique chance to see three. The backstory As far back as 1910, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company sought a use for its products in the nascent aviation industry. Specifically, the company saw a market for rubber-infused coatings for balloons and lighter-than-air craft – like the ones we came to know as blimps. Timeline The first non-rigid airship designed to be flown using helium was the Goodyear Blimp that would be christened Pilgrim. It first flew in 1925 at the company's Wingfoot Lake facility in Suffield, Ohio and eventually logged nearly 95,000 miles as the company's first public relations airship. 1928: The second Goodyear Blimp, Puritan, becomes the country's first permanently licensed airship. 1930: The Goodyear Blimp Defender becomes the first airship in the world to carry a lighted sign. 1941: The attack on Pearl Harbor accelerates Naval airship production. From 1941-1944, Goodyear delivers 154 blimps to the U.S. Navy, most of which were built at the Wingfoot Lake facility. 1946: Goodyear purchases seven blimps back from the Navy, with a five-ship fleet returning to service as Ranger, Volunteer, Enterprise, Mayflower and Puritan. 1955: Goodyear pioneers the world's first live aerial video for a national broadcast, capturing unprecedented views of the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game. 1967: Columbia broadcasts Super Bowl I for CBS. 1969: The GZ-20 model America debuts. The GZ-20 would serve as the basis for the Goodyear Blimp for almost 50 years, featuring a bigger lighted sign and other improvements. 2014: Goodyear and ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik engineers complete the build of Wingfoot One, the first semirigid NT model Goodyear Blimp which uses a light internal frame. Three more NTs follow, completing the current fleet of four airships. Dig deeper Goodyear's first public relations airship was named Pilgrim. Then, starting with Puritan in 1928, all airships for the next seven decades were named after America's Cup yacht race winners. That tradition ended in 2005; the current fleet of airships is named Wingfoot One, Wingfoot Two and Wingfoot Three. RELATED: Goodyear Blimp gets vintage makeover in honor of its 100th anniversary "Wingfoot," of course, is a reference to the company's corporate logo, the winged shoes of the Roman god Mercury. In 1916, the lake where the blimp hangar would be built was given the name Wingfoot Lake for the same reason. For decades, it was the site of a park for use by Goodyear employees and their families, but now is a state park open to all. Local perspective While Goodyear has been celebrating the blimps' big milestone all year, the main event will be this week in Northeastern Ohio, where residents still step outside to look up when they hear the characteristic drone of the blimps' engines droning overhead. All three North American blimps – the fourth, based in Europe, will not participate – will fly home to Akron for a series of triple-blimp flyovers at the Wingfoot Lake hangar where they were built, along with other stops around the area. Blimp fans can see the craft around Akron from Tuesday through Thursday, weather-permitting. The Source Information for this story came from Goodyear and previous FOX Local reporting, including flights aboard the blimps.

Goodyear executive Chris Delaney's mistress arrested for allegedly stabbing his wife to death

A top executive at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company who earned nearly $5 million in annual compensation is no longer with the firm after Belgian authorities arrested his mistress for allegedly stabbing his wife to death. Chris Delaney, who held the title of president of the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region at Akron,Ohio-based Goodyear since he was promoted the post in 2017, is no longer employed by the tiremaker, the company told the Wall Street Journal over the weekend. Delaney's alleged lover, a married Belgian woman named Greet Vandeput, was his executive assistant at Goodyear. She, too, is no longer with the company, according to the Journal. Advertisement 6 Chris Delaney and his wife, Carmel Delaney, are pictured in 2015. Carmel Delaney/Facebook 6 Greet Vandeput, Chris Delaney's executive assistant, is the suspect in Carmel's murder. Police say Vandeput and Chris Delaney were having an affair. Greet Vandeput/Linkedin Chris Delaney returned to his apartment in an upscale part of Brussels after work on March 17 and found his wife, Carmel Delaney, dead on the floor after having suffered at least four stab wounds, the Journal reported. Advertisement Since Chris Delaney does not speak French, he telephoned Vandeput, who then alerted police, according to the Journal. Initially, authorities and local media believed Carmel's death might have resulted from a botched burglary. 6 Carmel Delaney, 61, was stabbed to death on March 17. Deckerfh Surveillance cameras had captured someone in a mask entering the building shortly before Carmel arrived home that evening, according to police. Advertisement Although there were no indications of forced entry, investigators noted that three high-end watches had vanished from the apartment. Two days after Carmel Delaney was buried in an upstate New York funeral on April 2, Belgian police arrested Vandeput. It was during the course of the investigation that authorities discovered Chris Delaney and Vandeput, who is also married, were having an affair, according to the Journal. Vandeput was charged with murder and 'port d'arme par destination,' a legal term in Belgium referring to the use of an improvised weapon. Advertisement An autopsy revealed that Carmel had been stabbed four times in the chest and torso. A breakthrough in the case came after a friend of Vandeput's came forward with concerns following a conversation between them. 6 Chris Delaney earned around $5 million annually as an executive at Goodyear. He is seen with wife Carmel in 2016. Acting on the tip, police searched both Vandeput's home and a nearby horse stable where she kept two horses. There, behind a corrugated metal shed in a paddock, they found the missing watches, according to the Journal. Chris Delaney has been questioned by police as a witness but has not been charged. A spokesperson for Goodyear told the Journal the company would cooperate with authorities if asked. Neither Delaney nor Vandeput remains employed by the tiremaker and Delaney received no severance. 6 Carmel Delaney was found dead by her husband after he returned from work to the couple's Brussels apartment. Shutterstock 'We decline to comment further,' the company said. Advertisement Carmel Delaney, a Queens, NY, native, built a successful marketing career having worked in Europe and the Middle East for multinational giant Procter & Gamble. Vandeput had worked at Goodyear for more than a decade, following earlier roles at AstraZeneca and Siemens. She lived just outside Brussels in a modest brick home with her husband, two dogs, and a chicken coop. Like Carmel, she had a passion for horses and was reportedly recovering from breast cancer surgery at the time of her arrest. Chris and Carmel had relocated to Brussels in 2017, their final overseas stop after a whirlwind life abroad. Chris oversaw Goodyear's operations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Advertisement Carmel, meanwhile, ran a consultancy helping international students apply to US schools. Friends described the couple as close, charismatic, and generous. They met while working at Procter & Gamble and moved between countries together — from Poland to Saudi Arabia to China. 'What I know is that they loved each other dearly and he did not want anything to happen to Carmel,' James Lafferty, a longtime friend and former colleague, told the Journal. 6 Chris Delaney held the title of president of the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region at Akron,Ohio-based Goodyear. Getty Images Advertisement Photos on Carmel's online memorial show a full life: skiing trips, boat dinners, and afternoons with grandchildren. In one image, the couple smiles aboard a train — Chris in a blue V-neck sweater, Carmel wearing a matching scarf. The caption reads, 'Carmel & Chris the dream team xx.' Chris has since returned to the United States, and Carmel's friends in Brussels are planning a memorial for June. Advertisement On her online tribute page, one mourner shared an Irish epitaph: 'Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.' Carmel Delaney was 61 at the time of her death. She is survived by her father, Jim Gallagher; her husband; and their four children.
