Google Photos is rolling out two new AI-powered editing features – Reimagine and Auto Frame – aimed at helping users enhance their photos.
The Reimagine tool allows users to type a prompt to modify specific elements or add new features to a photo. According to Google in a blog post, users can get creative by changing the appearance of grass, trees, or even indoor decor within images.
Meanwhile, Auto Frame enhances photos by suggesting different crops or using generative AI to fill in missing areas around the subject, aimed at helping users improve composition.
Previously available only on Pixel devices, both tools will be accessible under the redesigned Editor tab as the company will begin rolling them out globally to Android devices next month, with iOS support coming later this year.
In addition to editing tools, Google Photos also introduced a new way to share albums instantly via QR codes. The feature, now being rolled out, allows users to generate QR codes for easy album access – made for sharing with nearby friends or printing for group events.
The updates come as Google Photos marked its 10th anniversary on May 28. The company boasted having more than 1.5 billion people use the app each month, collectively storing over nine trillion photos and videos.
When it was first launched, Google Photos offered unlimited free storage for photos and videos. That policy ended in 2021, when the company announced that all new uploads would count toward the 15GB of free storage included with each Google account.
