Security tightened in Dharwad district

In the wake of the Indo-Pak conflict and to contain possible repercussions, the police have taken several measures to ensure law and order in Dharwad district. Speaking at a meeting of the District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) in Dharwad on Monday, Superintendent of Police Gopal Byakod said that at the inter-district borders nine check posts had been set up and they had intensified checking of vehicles entering the district. These check posts were being manned by armed police personnel and there was strict vigil on the movement of people and activities. Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar said they had taken steps to keep a vigil over strategic places in the twin cities and they had set up 15 check posts. This apart, social media monitoring cells had been set up in 35 police stations of Hubballi-Dharwad, he said. Chairing the meeting, chairperson of DDMC and Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad Divya Prabhu G.R.J. said that the meeting was being conducted as per the Chief Minister's directions. Ms. Prabhu asked the officials of various departments to ensure that people did not panic, and to prevent any attempt to increase prices of essential commodities and also attempts to create artificial scarcity.

Five of family killed in car-truck collision near Karnataka's Hubballi while returning from family function

Five members of a family, including three women, were killed in the early hours of Tuesday in a car-truck collision near Ingalhalli village on National Highway 218 (Hubballi-Vijayapur) in Dharwad district. The accident occurred at around 8.30 am under the jurisdiction of the Hubballi Rural Police Station. According to the police, the victims were en route from Sagar to Kulageri Cross in Bagalkot district when their car collided head-on with a truck transporting jeera from Ahmedabad to Cochin. Shweta, Anjali, Sandeep, Shashikala and Vittal Shetty, all belonging to one family, died on the spot." "The family was returning to their place after Shweta's engagement in Sagar," SP Byakod said. The truck driver, Mahadev, who was at the wheel during the collision, recounted the impact. "The speeding car hit the truck directly. Neither I nor any other vehicle was there at the time this accident happened," he told ANI. The bodies of the deceased were later shifted to a government hospital in Hubballi for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the crash, police said. In March, seven people were killed and several others injured in two separate road accidents in Karnataka, according to police officials. The first accident occurred near Sibara village in Chitradurga taluk, where a car crashed into a stationary lorry, resulting in the deaths of five individuals. In the second incident, in Chikkaballapur district, a private bus collided with a car, causing the vehicle to catch fire and killing two passengers.
