Sarawakian Gordon Chung becomes deputy chief of Malaysian Cricket Association

KUCHING (April 29): Following the recent election of Sarawak Taekwondo Association (WTF) president Azizul Annuar Adenan as deputy president of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, another Sarawakian will be holding a key post in a national sports body. Gordon Chung Pei Nan is now the new deputy president of the Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA). The 43-year-old, who has served as Sarawak Cricket Association secretary since 2010, has also created history by becoming the first Sarawakian to hold the MCA deputy president post which runs from 2025-2027. Prior to this, Chung served as MCA vice president from 2021-23 and 2023-25. 'I want to thank all states for the confidence and votes and I look forward to hitting the ground running, starting with installing back corporate governance, structural reform within the association and a focus on high performance and grass-roots development. 'With the new leadership, l am hoping and expecting to see an improvement in world rankings of Malaysia by the next ICC cycle and a stronger working relationship with MCA stakeholders (states and government),' he told The Borneo Post. Chung also thanked Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah for giving him the encouragement, support and endorsement to go for the MCA No. 2 post. A media statement released by SCA said Chung's his appointment is seen as an important step in strengthening the development of cricket in Sarawak. Chung pledged to focus on developing young talent, strengthening cricket infrastructure and improving match hosting at all levels including internationally. Meanwhile, SCA president Awang Mahyan Awang Mohamed described Chung's election as proof of Sarawak's ability to produce sports leaders with calibre.
