Hwang Dong-hyuk: Thanks for everybody who rejected "Squid Game" in 2009!
5 Jun - "Squid Game" creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has recently been awarded Creator Tribute at the Gotham Awards. The special award was presented to Hwang by his lead actor Lee Jung-jae, who played Seong Gi-hun in the series. Lee described Hwang as "a storyteller with the imagination that changed the landscape of global TV." "Beneath the thrilling tension and unforgettable visuals, there were themes of strong criticism of inequality, despair, and the resilience of humanity. What director Hwang Dong-hyuk created was not just a drama. It was a mirror reflecting our current society with clear and piercing empathetic eyes. And the world responded with 265.2 million views for Season 1," he expressed. In his acceptance speech, Hwang thanked everyone who rejected "Squid Game" when he pitched it in 2009 "If even one person had said yes then, there would be no work as we know it today," he joked. "I am grateful to everyone who supported and believed in my vision. And I want to thank the cast and staff who have been with me throughout Seasons 1 to 3." He also thanked Lee in his speech, saying, "Although you couldn't save the other participants, you saved this show." Hwang did not end his speech without something to think about, as he spoke about the simplicity of the accolade, saying, "This trophy has a very simple design, is heavy, and solid. It is not a glamorous design like an Emmy or Oscar trophy. I'm not saying the 'Gotham Awards' trophy is ugly. It seems to say, 'Don't be blinded by the glamour of success.' It seems to inform me of the weight of responsibility. I will never forget and will continue to move forward." Season 3 of "Squid Game" will be released on Netflix on 27 June. ‘Squid Game' Director Honoured at Gotham Awards for Global Impact
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the visionary behind Netflix's global sensation Squid Game, was awarded the prestigious Creator Tribute at the Gotham Awards in New York on Monday, in recognition of his groundbreaking contribution to television. Accepting the award in English, Hwang described the continuing success of Squid Game as 'a miracle,' reflecting on how a once-rejected Korean script became a worldwide phenomenon over 12 years. 'Four years ago, when Squid Game won the Breakthrough Series Award, I called it a miracle,' Hwang said. 'Standing here again tonight, I believe that miracle still continues.' Hwang's remarks struck a humble tone, especially when reflecting on the meaning behind the Gotham trophy. 'It's not shiny or fancy like an Emmy or an Oscar,' he said. 'But it reminds us not to be blinded by the glamor of success and to carry the responsibility that comes with it.' Actor Lee Jung-jae, who portrays the main character Seong Gi-hun, introduced Hwang during the ceremony. 'What sets Squid Game apart is the depth of Director Hwang's vision,' Lee said, praising the series for its sharp critique of inequality and human resilience beneath its thrilling exterior. The Creator Tribute, a category introduced in 2023, honours creators who challenge the limits of television. The Gotham Awards committee described Hwang's work as 'high-stakes storytelling combined with sharp cultural commentary.'

Owen Cooper, 15, has won a major award for his breakout performance in the Netflix smash hit Adolescence. The British actor, who beat around 500 young actors to land the role of teenage murder suspect Jamie Miller, won Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Limited Series at the Gotham TV Awards in New York City on Monday. Cooper tied for the award with Dying For Sex actress Jenny Slate. He focused his acceptance speech on his co-star Erin Doherty, who was up for the same prize for her portrayal of psychologist Briony Ariston. "(The) main person that I have to thank is Erin, who is also nominated for this award. That episode that we did together, it was easy to do it with you and it was such an honour to share this, share this award with you. You deserve this award just as much as I do, so round of applause for Erin please," he said, prompting the crowd to clap, according to Cooper went on to thank "everyone that was part of the Adolescence cast and crew", including director Philip Barantini and series co-creator, co-writer, producer and star Stephen Graham. He then sparked laughter with his parting message: "Who else, my parents for creating me. Yeah, but that's about it. Thanks to Gotham Awards for handing me this award." Adolescence won three of the four Gotham Awards it was nominated for. In addition to Cooper's prize, the show took home Breakthrough Limited Series and Outstanding Lead Performance in a Limited Series for Graham. The teenage actor has earned critical acclaim for his work in Adolescence and has already won the Breakthrough Award at the IndieWire Honors ceremony.
