Andhra Pradesh energy minister defends power purchase agreement with Axis at ₹4.60 per unit

Strongly defending the state govt's decision to sign the power purchase agreement (PPA) to buy power at ₹4.60 per unit from private developer Axis, energy minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar said the decision was taken in the best interests of the state to provide power even during peak hours without interruptions. Dismissing YSRCP's claims of buying electricity at ₹2.49 per unit from SECI as 'completely false', he clarified that including transmission losses and other costs, the actual price offered by the YSRCP regime was over ₹5 per unit. Gottipati said former chief minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has been spreading false information about the power sector. 'The power purchase agreements made by the NDA alliance govt with companies like Axis and Brookfield will help produce 400 MW of power in Rayalaseema, which will help create jobs and income for local people. The govt has ensured that power will be available even during peak demand hours at just ₹4.60 per unit. In contrast, power was bought at ₹5.12-9.30 per unit during Jagan's rule in 2022,' he said. He said about 1,700 acres of land was taken from farmers, who are being paid ₹31,000 per acre each year as rent. 'The state will also earn 9 per centGST from Axis Energy . As the power is generated within Andhra Pradesh, there will be no transmission loss,' added Gottipati. The energy minister further said that PPAs were done to reduce electricity charges and lessen the burden on people. 'After Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated, Nara Chandrababu Naidu made the state a power-surplus state. But during YSRCP's rule from 2019 to 2024, the power sector was mismanaged badly. They spent ₹10,000 crore in just one year under short-term power purchases, which became a huge burden on the people. Electricity tariff was increased nine times during YSRCP's five years, something never done before. ₹20,000 crore burden was levied on commoners through FPPCA charges,' Gottipati alleged. He reiterated that the NDA alliance govt has not increased electricity charges since coming to power. 'But the opposition has been trying to criticize the govt from day one only to malign the image of Chandrababu Naidu. People should to think carefully and not believe in false campaigns. The govt is making agreements to ensure that farmers and youth benefit, and people get uninterrupted power even during high-demand periods,' he added.
