Dates for 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor revealed

The dates for the 100th anniversary of the biennial contest, announced by Ryder Cup Europe, will have three days of competition between Europe and the United States, from Friday, September 17 - Sunday, September 19. Following the conclusion of this year's contest, which takes place at Bethpage Black in New York in September, Adare Manor will officially become the next host venue of the Ryder Cup. It will be the second time Ireland has hosted the Ryder Cup, having previously done so in 2006 when Team Europe, under the captaincy of Ian Woosnam, defeated the US by a record margin of 18½ - 9½ at The K Club. Guy Kinnings, European Tour CEO, said: 'The official announcement of the dates is always a significant milestone in the Ryder Cup journey for a country and a venue, and we're delighted to today confirm details for the 2027 contest at Adare Manor. 'Rory McIlroy's victory in the Masters last month to complete the career Grand Slam, combined with anticipation of July's Open Championship, has already heightened the buzz around golf on the island of Ireland. This announcement will add to that excitement as Ireland continues its preparation to host golf's greatest team competition for the second time in 2027 when the Ryder Cup celebrates its 100th anniversary. 'Hosting a Ryder Cup is a huge collective effort and our thanks therefore go to the Government of Ireland, to JP McManus and the team at Adare Manor and to Limerick City and County Council for their continued support over the next two-and-a-half years.' Adare Manor owner JP McManus said: 'We are honoured to be hosting one of global sports biggest events at Adare Manor. Now the dates have been announced, the anticipation for the 2027 Ryder Cup will continue to grow as we countdown to becoming the next host venue.'

There will also be opportunities to volunteer to be part of the 2027 Ryder Cup, details of which will also be announced towards the end of this year. 'We are honoured to be hosting one of global sports biggest events at Adare Manor," said JP McManus. "Now the dates have been announced, the anticipation for the 2027 Ryder Cup will continue to grow as we countdown to becoming the next host venue. 'Hosting golf's greatest team contest will provide many economic benefits to the Irish economy and the south west community in particular, with thousands of people travelling to be part of the Ryder Cup's 100th anniversary. 'We look forward to welcoming the many international visitors to Ireland, Limerick and Adare in two years' time and to showcasing our island to a global audience.' Situated on the River Maigue, the Tom Fazio designed course hosted the Irish Open in 2007 that was won by Pádraig Harrington in the run-up to his first major title victory. The venue has also hosted the JP McManus Pro-Am in 2005, 2010 and 2022. Guy Kinnings, CEO of the European Tour Group, said: 'The official announcement of the dates is always a significant milestone in the Ryder Cup journey for a country and a venue, and we're delighted to today confirm details for the 2027 contest at Adare Manor. 'Rory McIlroy's victory in the Masters last month to complete the career Grand Slam, combined with anticipation of July's Open Championship, has already heightened the buzz around golf on the island of Ireland. 'Hosting a Ryder Cup is a huge collective effort and our thanks therefore go to the Government of Ireland, to JP McManus and the team at Adare Manor and to Limerick City and County Council for their continued support over the next two-and-a-half years.' Minister for Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan, highlighted the Government's support for the event. "We have adopted a whole of Government approach to ensure that Ireland successfully hosts the event in 2027, showcasing the many valuable benefits the island of Ireland has as a tourism and golfing destination, and ensure the legacy participation benefit for the sport," said O'Donovan. 'The passion of Irish people for golf makes Ireland really stand out internationally as a golfing venue. For Ryder Cup week, the eyes of the sporting world will be on the beautiful village of Adare. "And I am confident that the local community of Adare and the people of Limerick and Ireland generally, will ensure that this event is a wonderful success and that all who attend will want to return to visit Ireland again.' This year's Ryder Cup will take place on US soil at Bethpage Black, where Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry will be part of the European team that will most likely face a hostile atmosphere in September.

How Cork's Good Fish Company became a leviathan of the international frozen-fish industry

Ireland's EU Commissioner, Michael McGrath, along with Fisheries & Oceans Commissioner Costas Kadis and Minister of State Timmy Dooley, were on hand to cut the tape at the new facility. Founder Denis Good opened his first shop almost 40 years ago in Carrigaline and quickly began to supply restaurants across Cork. Two retail units in Douglas Court and Kinsale followed, with seven shops open at the height of the company's focus on retail operations. The company, which employs over 100 people, then expanded into exporting its products to new overseas markets and demand soared, necessitating the new processing facility that's strategically located adjacent to Cork Container Terminal. Proximity to the port allows immediate export of the fish and seafood processed on site and as well the new M28 motorway (due to open in 2028) means the company will be able to easily transport its products throughout Ireland. 'We are delighted Commissioner McGrath, Commissioner Kadis, and Minister Dooley were able to join us for the official opening of our new location, just two kilometres from Cork's new container terminal,' Donagh Good said. 'Building the facility was essential for us to maintain our current growth and to respond strongly to the ever-increasing demand for high-quality frozen seafood products in the domestic market, in Europe, and further afield.' 'Our focus has always been to provide sustainably sourced fish and seafood and ensuring good quality from dockside to dinner tables. That ethos remains unchanged, though customers are getting more adventurous in their tastes! "Sustainable practices are at the core of processes at our new facility, so we foresee further development, new markets, a stronger and more capable workforce, and exciting times in our new home in Shanbally, thanks to the support of everyone that helped bring this investment to life," Donagh added. Commissioner McGrath said: 'I am delighted to welcome this incredibly impressive new facility by the Good Fish Company - an extraordinary Cork success story I've long admired and known personally. The journey started in 1988 when Denis Good opened a fish shop in Carrigaline and now, under the leadership of his son Donagh, the company is opening a state of the art, next generation processing facility in Shanbally. 'With vital EU and Government of Ireland funding behind it, this investment is a major contribution to enhancing Ireland's seafood sector supporting employment and demonstrating the EU's commitment to rural enterprise and innovation. I wish the Good family and their staff continued success in the years ahead.' Good Fish has received support from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, the Brexit Adjustment Reserve, and Ireland's Seafood Development Programme, which is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the EU as part of the European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund. 'This factory marks the beginning of another new chapter in the Good Fish story,' Donagh Good concluded. 'Building on more than 35 years of hard work, innovation, and dedication that came before me, we're excited about the developments to come while maintaining the same high-quality standards in service and products that Good Fish is renowned for.' Last chance to see inside historic Wexford building before it undergoes major transformation

These open days with the theme of 'Past, Present and Future', will mark an important milestone in the life of the Market House. Visitors are encouraged to step inside, reflect on the building's rich legacy, and look ahead to its exciting transformation into a dynamic community space. Speaking ahead of the event, Cathaoirleach of the Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District Cllr Oliver Walsh said: 'This is a unique opportunity for the people of Gorey to reconnect with a building that has stood at the heart of the town for generations. "As we prepare for its regeneration, it's important to acknowledge the role it has played in our shared history and ensure the voices of the community shape its future use. We hope as many people as possible will join us to celebrate this turning point.' The event also forms part of a wider effort to document what the Market House means to the people of Gorey. Video recordings will be carried out across both days, capturing stories, memories and connections that highlight the building's deep roots within the community. The regeneration of Gorey Market House is co-funded by the Government of Ireland, the European Union through the ERDF Southern, Eastern and Midland Regional Programme 2021–2027, and Wexford County Council. Anyone who has a connection to the Market House whether through work, events, or personal memories, are especially welcome. The project team has already begun collecting interviews from local residents, and looks forward to sharing these insights with the public over the course of the regeneration.

New Pope has best wishes of all Irish people

Mr Martin said the election of Cardinal Robert Prevost as Pope was a source of 'great pride' for the US. The new Chicago-born pontiff addressed crowds of thousands at St Peter's Square at the Vatican shortly after white smoke emerged from the Sistine Chapel on Thursday evening. Irish premier Mr Martin said: 'The scenes of great joy and celebrations in St Peter's Square are a reflection of the hopes and goodwill felt by people of the Catholic faith from all around the world towards the new Pope. 'I hope that this groundswell of best wishes towards Pope Leo XIV will give him strength and support as he takes on the immense responsibility of his pontificate. 'I know that he has the best wishes of all Irish people, of all traditions.' The Taoiseach added: 'I also send my congratulations to the people of the United States, a country with which Ireland enjoys such a deep and strong relationship. 'To have a Pope from their country is a source of great pride and an honour for their nation. 'I wish Pope Leo XIV every strength, good health, and the required spiritual guidance as he begins his mission of leading the Catholic Church at a time of challenge, building on the pastoral direction and achievements of Pope Francis. 'I look forward to working with Pope Leo XIV as an important and influential partner in addressing the many and interlinked challenges facing our world, as we work for peace, justice and sustainable development for all.' Northern Ireland's First Minister, Michelle O'Neill, has described the appointment of Pope Leo XIV as a 'day of profound significance', urging the American Pope to stand with Gaza. In a post on X, she wrote: 'This is a day of profound significance for Catholics in Ireland and worldwide, as Pope Leo XIV assumes his role of spiritual leader. 'I hope he will use his influence to stand up for the marginalised and oppressed, champion peace and lead with courage and compassion, just as his predecessor, Pope Francis, did. 'As the genocide in Gaza continues and a devastating famine looms, I encourage the Pope to stand unwaveringly for the rights of the Palestinian people to life, dignity and freedom, and to urgently use his influence to help bring an end to this barbaric genocide.' Ireland's deputy premier Simon Harris said it was a 'momentous' occasion for millions of Catholics around the world. He said: 'The election of a new Pope is always a significant moment, not only for the Catholic Church but for the broader global community. As Tanaiste and on behalf of the Government of Ireland, I extend our heartfelt congratulations and wish him every success for his Pontificate. 'I have no doubt he will continue to build on the extraordinary legacy left behind by his predecessor, the late Pope Francis, who taught us all the importance of kindness and humanity.' The Tanaiste added: 'Ireland shares a long and enduring relationship with the Holy See, rooted in deep historical, cultural and spiritual ties. 'We in Ireland value this connection, and we look forward to continuing and strengthening our close engagement with the Holy See under Pope Leo XIV's leadership. 'In a time marked by complex global challenges—from poverty and conflict to climate change—the role of moral and spiritual leadership is more vital than ever. 'We hope to work together with His Holiness in the pursuit of peace, justice, and solidarity amongst people.' The Church of Ireland's Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, John McDowell, said his church 'rejoiced with our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters'. He said: 'I wish to pass on the good wishes of the Church of Ireland not only to Pope Leo but also to the bishops, priests and Catholic people of Ireland as they enter in closer communion and closer knowledge of their new Chief Shepherd.'
