Italy Plans to Stick With Its Tough Terms on UniCredit's BPM Bid
Italy is set to keep the strict conditions it imposed on UniCredit SpA to take over rival lender Banco BPM SpA, even if the bidder starts a legal battle to ease those terms. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government is not planning to soften wide-ranging conditions imposed on the potential purchase even if UniCredit proceeds with an appeal at the country's administrative court, according to government officials, who asked not to be named.

Brazil government to announce $5.5 billion spending containment, IOF tax hike
SAO PAULO, May 22 (Reuters) - Brazil's government is set to announce a spending containment of 31 billion reais ($5.54 billion) and an increase in the IOF tax on financial transactions, Transport Minister Renan Filho said on Thursday. His remarks at a highway concession auction in Sao Paulo came ahead of the expected release of the government's bi-monthly revenues and expenses report in Brasilia, with a press conference scheduled to happen right after. Portugal Opposes Further Increase in Spanish Banks' Presence
Portugal's government said Spanish banks shouldn't further increase their presence in the Portuguese market. Spanish lenders now represent about a third of Portugal's banking market, Finance Minister Joaquim Miranda Sarmento said in an interview with television channel RTP3 on Wednesday night. 'I think that value shouldn't increase, due to a matter of concentration and of dependency.'
