Maine installs ‘Welcome Canadians' signs as trade war threatens summer tourism

The first "Bienvenue Canadiens!' sign was installed last week in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Maine Gov. Janet Mills said more signs would be installed at border crossings and locations popular with visitors, with other versions of welcome signs to be available for businesses. (Nick Moore/CTV Atlantic) Maine is placing new highway signs across the state to welcome Canadian visitors, as the U.S. trade war threatens to disrupt the upcoming summer tourism season. The first 'Bienvenue Canadiens!' sign was installed last week in Old Orchard Beach, which is a vacation hot spot for Quebec tourists. During a typical summer, up to 40 per cent of Old Orchard Beach visitors come from Canada. Maine Gov. Janet Mills said more signs would be installed at border crossings and locations popular with visitors, with other versions of welcome signs to be available for businesses. 'Look, I know that a sign alone cannot fix this economic uncertainty, but it can convey to our neighbours that they are welcome here, and that we do value their presence in our state,' said Mills in a weekly radio address. 'We do not feel hostility towards our Canadian friends and neighbours.' Governors and premiers to meet in Boston Mills said nearly 800,000 people from Canada visited Maine in 2024, representing about five per cent of the state's total number of visitors last year. 'But this year, just from February to April alone, 166,000 fewer Canadians travelled by land to Maine,' said Mills. 'That's 26 per cent less than the same period last year. That's a big drop in visitors. So, my administration is doing what we can to market Maine as a destination for Canadian travellers.' Mills said New England state governors are scheduled to meet with the premiers of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, and Ontario for a summit in Boston on June 16. 'At that meeting, I plan to discuss our partnerships with Canadians and our work to ensure that our historic friendship and our deeply intertwined economies will endure for generations to come,' said Mills.

AfDB 2025 Annual Meetings kick off in Abidjan with over 6,000 delegates from 81 countries

Abidjan - Over 6,000 delegates from 81 countries, including African heads of state and government, finance ministers, central bank governors, development partners, private sector representatives, civil society leaders, academics, think tanks and opinion leaders, NGOs, and other stakeholders, are attending the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group's 2025 Annual Meetings which kicked off on Monday and will run until May 30 in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. During these meetings, held on the theme: "Making Africa's Capital Work Better for Africa's Development," the AfDB Governors will elect a successor to current Group President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, whose second five-year term ends on August 31. Tunisia is taking part with a delegation led by Minister of Economy and Planning Samir Abdelhafidh, Governor of the Republic of Tunisia Group at the AfDB. Over the next five days, high-level dialogues, strategic discussions and knowledge-sharing events will be held on some of Africa's most urgent and ambitious priorities, ranging from macroeconomic stability and domestic resource mobilisation to energy transition, food systems transformation and climate finance. The agenda includes a presidential dialogue at the launch of the African Economic Outlook report, thematic discussions on mobilising capital in a difficult economic context and institution-building. These Annual Meetings are a platform to rethink how Africa mobilises, maintains and deploys its own wealth to shape its future in a financial context shaped by the many challenges facing Africa, while the outgoing AfDB President will make way in the vote for the new Bank President for Sidi Ould Tah (Mauritania), Amadou Hott (Senegal), Abbas Mahamat Tolli (Chad), Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala (South Africa) and Samuel Munzele Maimbo (Zambia).

Morton freshman Analiya Feliciano is ‘just doing my thing.' Like hitting over .700 in her high school debut.

Morton's Analiya Feliciano sets high standards for herself. Although the freshman shortstop didn't know what to expect in her debut with the Governors, she knew she wasn't going to settle for anything. 'I know I have potential, and I can do better, so I'm really hard on myself,' Feliciano said. 'When I came in, I was a little bit nervous because I was the freshman on the team. I had no experience with a high school team. But now that I'm on the team, I'm super comfortable with the girls. So I'm just doing my thing. I'm just showing all of my skills and talent.' And how. Feliciano was hitting .718 with seven doubles, two triples, three homers, 21 RBIs, 32 runs scored and 29 stolen bases, topping the team in each category, before Great Lakes Athletic Conference champion Morton (9-5, 3-0) played Griffith on Tuesday. Feliciano has impressed veteran coach Lisa Owens-Korba, who is in her first season leading the Governors after two as an assistant. 'She's a great kid,' Owens-Korba said. 'She's also a straight-A student. She's fantastic all around. She's supportive of everybody on the team. She's the one who makes sure everybody is up. She keeps on them, makes sure they're part of it, working. She takes everything as if it's a game situation. When we're out here practicing, she never goes half at anything. 'She very much takes a leadership role on our team. She's very much the first person to say, 'Let's do this, let's do that,' without having to be tapped. It's big to step up when you're 14, 15 years old.' Feliciano tends to meet hurdles head on. She was asked about Morton playing perennial power Crown Point in a Class 4A Crown Point Sectional opener next week. 'It's OK,' she said. 'I like the competition.' Feliciano also played volleyball for the Governors. 'It was way different from middle school volleyball, way more competitive,' she said. 'But I like the challenge.' Owens-Korba hasn't been too surprised by Feliciano's performance. 'I had heard good things about her, and then I saw her at volleyball games, so I knew she was highly athletic,' Owens-Korba said. 'Her reputation does her justice. She's fantastic.' Feliciano credits her older sister Angelyna Lopez, a former standout for the Governors who graduated in 2023, for helping pave the way. 'She got me into softball because she played before me,' Feliciano said. 'She brought out my love for the game. Watching her made me determined to play.' Feliciano hasn't looked back. 'Softball is my sport,' she said. 'I've been playing since I was 7 years old. I work to improve every day. It's fun playing the game. 'It's about having a positive mindset. I always have a good attitude. I'm always willing to play wherever. I don't care where I'm put. I just live for softball, so as long as I'm on the field, working hard, that's all that matters.' Feliciano also helps coach her younger sister's team, and her father Angel Feliciano is in his first season as an assistant with the Governors. 'Softball is life in our household,' Angel Feliciano said. 'Ball is life. All year round, not a week off.' Morton junior pitcher Ei'lani Herrera sees the fruits of Analiya Feliciano's labors. 'She's a great player, talented, all of the above,' Herrera said. 'What she's doing as a freshman, that's really amazing.' Feliciano plans to keep moving forward. 'If people don't know if they want to keep doing a sport or not, just keep it up,' she said. 'In the end, you never know what results you're going to get. You should just keep trying no matter what. A little work pays off a whole lot. 'I never thought I'd be super great at softball when I started when I was 7. But now that I'm here, I feel great.'

Interview: Multilateralism key to long-term development, says Malaysian minister

MILAN, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian Second Finance Minister Amir Hamzah Azizan has called for a renewed commitment to multilateralism and rules-based trade. In an interview with Xinhua on Sunday on the sidelines of the 28th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)+3 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting in Milan, the minister also said the ASEAN+3 region has to face and address the impact of the trade war initiated by the United States. "We hope to encourage a return to multilateralism and a rules-based trading system," which are crucial for long-term development. This year's meeting, co-chaired by China and Malaysia, focused on global and regional macroeconomic developments and regional financial cooperation within the ASEAN+3 framework. Participants endorsed updates to the strategic direction for ASEAN+3 financial cooperation and agreed to launch new technical assistance tools addressing medium- to long-term structural challenges. With a population of just under 700 million, ASEAN's gross domestic product reached 3.8 trillion U.S. dollars in 2024, Amir Hamzah said, underscoring that the region vibrancy enables ASEAN to boost intra-Asian trade against external uncertainties. ASEAN, committed to multilateralism and to stimulating domestic demand, is striving to sustain its economic momentum, he said. ASEAN is also expanding its community by engaging more countries, including China, and is working to help rebuild a multilateral trading mechanism that benefits all members, he added. Highlighting China's importance as a market for ASEAN countries, the minister said as China's economy expands and its domestic market develops further, ASEAN looks forward to increasing its exports to China and sharing the prosperity brought about through deeper cross-border cooperation. Malaysia is holding the ASEAN presidency in 2025, with data showing that ASEAN and China have remained each other's largest trading partners for the fifth consecutive year.
