'This was never over': 52 years after school tiff, 2 men in their 60s assault Class 4 classmate to settle scores
A decades-old schoolyard fight in Kasaragod has reignited after 52 years, leading to a violent confrontation. Balakrishnan, 62, allegedly attacked his former classmate, V J Babu, over a quarrel from their Class IV days. K ASARAGOD: While most childhood fights are forgotten with time, a decades-old schoolyard fight have simmered for decades and resurfaced violently in Kasaragod 52 years later. Balakrishanan, 62, of Maloth House in Kasaragod reopened a schoolyard scuffle by attacking his Class IV classmate and getting himself landed in a police case. Vellarikundu police have booked two elderly men, both classmates, for allegedly injuring an elderly man over the fight which took place in their primary school days. According to V J Babu, 62, a native of Vellarikundu, he was attacked by Balakrishnan and another classmate Mathew Valiyaplackkal at Malom town on Monday. He alleged that the attack was in retaliation to an old quarrel which had erupted between Babu and Balakrishnan when they were studying in Class IV at Natakkallu Aided UP School in Malom 52 years ago. As per the FIR, the accused, Balakrishnan and Mathew, were Babu's classmates at the school and there were quarrel between Babu and Balakrishnan while they were studying in Class IV. On Monday, Balakrishnan along with Mathew confronted Babu at Malom town around 1pm and while Balakrishnan restrained him by grabbing the collar of his shirt, Mathew allegedly hit him on the face and back of the body with a stone, causing injuries. Babu lost two teeth, and was admitted to the Govt Medical College Hospital at Pariyaram in Kannur. Babu claimed the long-standing grudge held by Balakrishnan led to the attack. Babu said he had beaten up Balakrishnan once when they were studying in Class IV, following which an argument had erupted between them and Balakrishnan held a grudge about it. However, the trio had been behaving like friends in the ensuing years. Vellarikundu SHO T K Mukundan said an FIR has been registered against Balakrishnan and Mathew under sections 126(2), 118(1) and 3(5) of BNS and investigation was on in the case. Meanwhile, efforts are on to settle the case out of court as Babu was willing to settle the case if the accused is ready to pay him Rs 1.5 lakh as compensation.

Four held on charge of raping minor girl
Patna: West Champaran police have arrested four men in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 15-year-old girl late on Saturday night. The incident took place in a field near the girl's village. According to the police, the minor had stepped out of her home when she encountered the accused, who convinced her to accompany them to a nearby agricultural field. There, they committed the assault. The girl lost consciousness and was later found by local villagers, who alerted her family. Local SHO Kumar Devendra said, "When the girl's condition worsened, the accused fled. Due to excessive bleeding, her condition remains critical. She was first admitted to the primary health centre (PHC), but doctors referred her to Govt Medical College Hospital (GMCH), Bettiah, for better treatment." The girl's father filed an FIR and based on her statement, all four accused were identified and arrested during raids. One of the accused is originally from Uttar Pradesh but had been living in Bagaha for construction work. "All the accused are adults. The case has been registered under the POCSO Act. We are investigating how the minor reached the field. A forensic examination of the site has been conducted, and a dog squad has been deployed to assist in the investigation," the SHO added.

Murder of 15-year-old Shahbaz: Kerala high court adjourns bail pleas of six students
Kochi: High court has adjourned to May 20 the bail pleas filed by six students accused in connection with the death of 15-year-old Shahbaz, a Class X student of M J Higher Secondary School, petitions, filed by the six accused, who were also Class X students, sought urgent consideration of their pleas, citing that May 20 is the last date for submitting applications for higher secondary admission. It was contended that continued custody was unnecessary as the investigation had already been completed. Meanwhile, the general education department has withheld the SSLC examination results of the accused bench of Justice M A Abdul Hakhim posted the matter for May 20 for further hearing. According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on Feb 28 during a farewell function at a tuition centre, where the accused allegedly assaulted Shahbaz with a deadly weapon following a minor altercation. It is alleged that he was attacked with a 'nunchuck', repeatedly punched and kicked, resulting in a severe skull fracture. Shahbaz succumbed to his injuries the next day at the Govt Medical College Hospital, accused were subsequently arrested and are currently housed at an observation home. They were permitted to appear for the SSLC examinations.
