Grace Christian University students face ‘Big Freeze' for tuition
WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — Students at a small Christian college in metro Grand Rapids took a dip in the cold Wednesday as the culmination of a fundraising effort to pay their tuition. Now in its third year, was held Wednesday afternoon at Grace Christian University in Wyoming. The 21 students who participated had to spend three seconds in an inflatable pool of cold water. 'However much money you've raised over the course of the event, you get to keep that and it goes straight towards your tuition,' Triston Murray, a senior and this year's top fundraiser, explained. 'It goes towards any of the tuition that you have to pay, s o any of your student debt, any loans that you have to take out for classes or on-campus housing or stuff like that.' The first 10 student fundraisers who reached $250 had those dollars matched by the university. The top 10 fundraisers got more scholarships from the university, ranging from $100 to $5,500. The Big Freeze funds totaled $21,475 this year: $13,475 raised by the students and $8,000 in fundraising matches from Grace Christian. Murray raised $3,910; Tommy Perrotta came in second with $3,400; and Stacy Delgado raised $2,248. Tuition at Grace Christian costs $19,500 for the fall semester. donations may still be made online. The votes should come fast and heavy as you decide who should be the Guardian Foundation Repair girls athlete of the week in the Knoxville area for Feb. 10-15. This week's candidates include: Camryn Brown, Northview Academy: Brown had 16 points, including two 3-pointers, in a win over Grainger last Monday. She led all scorers with 14 points, including four 3-pointers in a 64-25 win over Fulton last Wednesday, and had 19 points, including four 3-pointers in a 60-49 win over Anderson County last Friday. Nya Burns, Grace Christian: Burns had 16 points, six assists and two steals in the Division II-A, District tournament 64-26 win over Lakeway last Tuesday. Gwen Carroll, Alcoa: Carroll had 19 points and nine rebounds as Alcoa rolled to a 66-55 win over Maryville last Friday. Sophie Carroll, CAK: Carroll had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in a 61-55 win over Grace Christian on Saturday. She had another double-double with had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds in a 72-26 over First Baptist last Tuesday. Adit Kuol, The King's Academy: Kuol finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds with two steals as TKA knocked off Clayton Bradley, 90-25, in the Division II-A, District 1 tournament last Tuesday. Aaliyha Morgan, Rockwood: Morgan finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and seven steals in a 44-25 loss to Oakdale last Tuesday. Kendall Murphy, Bearden: Murphy led Bearden with 21 points in Bearden's 77-19 win over William Blount last Tuesday. Ensley Perry, Catholic: Perry had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds as Catholic knocked off Girls Prep, 62-33, last Thursday. Emory Thompson, Harriman: Thompson had 22 points and five rebounds, including six 3-pointers in a 71-55 win over Midway last Tuesday. Cloey Wade, South-Doyle: Wade had 11 points, 12 rebounds, four steals, four blocks and three assists a 45-39 victory over Anderson County last Thursday. Vote now. The poll closes at noon on Thursday.
