2025 IMSA Laguna Seca starting lineup: Vanthoor, BMW stay perfect on the pole
Dries Vanthoor remained perfect in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship qualifying this season, putting the No. 24 BMW M Team RLL BMW M Hybrid V8 on pole position for the fourth consecutive race. In starting first for Sunday's two-hour, 40-minute race (3 p.m., NBC and Peacock), Vanthoor became the first with four consecutive poles since 2011 (when Ricky Taylor qualified first in six consecutive events). 'For sure I'm very happy to have four consecutive poles,' said Vanthoor, who co-drives with Philipp Eng. 'A bit sad that I don't have any wins out of them, but we have a chance now to make that happen tomorrow. It's important that we put that behind us and come away from here answering a different question than: 'When are we going to win?' Bryce Aron Taking Over No. 9 Chip Ganassi Racing Entry at Barber
INDYCAR Chip Ganassi Racing has signed Bryce Aron to drive the team's No. 9 INDY NXT by Firestone entry, starting at this weekend's Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park. Chicago-area native Aron's 2024 rookie INDY NXT season with Andretti Global featured two podiums and three top-five finishes. Aron, 21, started this season by finishing 13th at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in an HMD Motorsports car. 'I'm very excited to be joining Chip Ganassi Racing,' Aron said. 'They are such a historic and accomplished team. I've already spent some time with the group at the INDYCAR open test, and it is easy to see why they have so much success. I am looking forward to working with everyone on the team and hitting the ground running at Barber this weekend.' From 2021-23, Aron competed in GB3 and Euroformula Open Championships, winning races at legendary European tracks like Spa, Hungaroring, Paul Ricard and Donington. Aron also competed at the 2025 Rolex 24 At Daytona, finishing sixth overall in a GTP entry. 'We are excited to welcome Bryce to Chip Ganassi Racing,' said Taylor Kiel, CGR director, INDYCAR. 'We were fortunate to be able to have him test with us at Mid-Ohio last week and get acclimated to the team and our car, so we're looking forward to building that into a successful INDY NXT program." Aron replaces Irish driver Jonathan Browne, who indicated in a social media post he was withdrawing from the INDYCAR development series due to 'funding issues.' The Grand Prix of Alabama takes place at 11:30 a.m. ET Sunday, May 4, with live coverage on FS1 and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

Evagoras Papasavvas To Make Series Debut with HMD at Barber
INDYCAR Evagoras Papasavvas will compete with HMD Motorsports this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park for the second round of the INDY NXT by Firestone season, driving the No. 24 car in his debut in the INDYCAR development series. 'I'm incredibly excited to join HMD Motorsports for the Grand Prix of Alabama," Papasavvas said. "After a productive test at Mid-Ohio, I feel ready to take on the challenge. The car is amazing, and the team has made me feel right at home. I'm grateful to HMD Motorsports for the opportunity, and I'm focused on delivering the best result possible and learning as much as I can this weekend." This announcement comes after a successful recent test session at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for Ohio native Papasavvas, 17, who was named as a reserve driver for HMD Motorsports earlier in the season. Papasavvas comes to INDY NXT after racing the last three seasons in USF 2000 for Jay Howard Driver Development, with three victories. He placed fourth in series points in 2023 and 2024. 'Evagoras impressed us with how quickly he adapted during the Mid-Ohio test," HMD Motorsports President Mike Maurini said. "He showed maturity and speed beyond his years, and we're looking forward to seeing him compete at Barber. It's a big step, but we're confident he'll handle it well.' Papasavvas replaces German driver Sophia Floersch, who mutually agreed to part with the team after the season-opening Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. The Grand Prix of Alabama takes place at 11:30 a.m. ET Sunday, May 4, with live coverage on FS1 and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

Palou finally loses as IndyCar champ's 2-race winning streak snapped by Kirkwood in Long Beach
LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Kyle Kirkwood showed that Alex Palou can be beat this IndyCar season and returned Andretti Global to the top of the podium with his second career victory at the Grand Prix of Long Beach. Kirkwood has won the most prestigious street course race in the United States twice in the last three years and Sunday's win ended the early run of Palou dominance. Palou, a three-time IndyCar champion including the last two consecutive seasons, won the first two races this year. Palou, the current points leader, instead finished second. 'You never feel amazing when you finish second,' Palou said. 'I tried, I tried. I think we did the best we could.' Palou's dominance has started to irritate other drivers in the field, but the Spaniard doesn't care. He was an unknown from a racing series in Japan when he arrived in IndyCar in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic when competition was in a bubble and few got a chance to interact with Palou. He moved to Chip Ganassi Racing in 2021 and, in top-notch equipment, won three races and his first IndyCar championship. He was polite, always smiling, and used the descriptor 'it's amazing' for nearly everything good that was happening to him. Palou's demeanor was endearing and he presented himself as very eager to please. It wasn't an act, but as he collected three championship trophies, there's been a shift in Palou's approach — he's still smiling and nice, but he's calculated and unconcerned about the competition. When told this weekend he should give his rivals a chance to win a race, Palou used an expletive in declining and said to publish his words. He said he planned to win the first six races of the season before he'd give another driver a chance — a run that would include Palou's first victory in next month's Indianapolis 500. Alas, his streak came to an end on the downtown streets of Long Beach, which hosted the caution-free race for the 50th year. 'I am not disappointed, 100% I am happy to be here,' Palou said. 'It sucks we couldn't make it more interesting for the fans, but I am happy to be here.' Palou joined his Ganassi teammate Scott Dixon as the only drivers in the last 14 seasons to win the first two races of the year — Dixon did it in 2020, when he won the first three races and eventually his sixth IndyCar title. Will Power (2010), Sebastian Bourdais (2006), Paul Tracy (2003), Sam Hornish Jr. (2001), Rick Mears (1982) and Johnny Rutherford (1980) are the only drivers to also win the first two races of the season. All but Power went on to win the championship. ___ AP auto racing:
