Hispanic Center expands to lakeshore with nonprofit acquisition

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Hispanic Center of Western Michigan is expanding on the lakeshore by acquiring the Tri-Cities Puentes Initiative. 'This is part of our strategic move to have a presence on the lakeshore and really a declaration to our community saying we have heard that there is a need there,' Melissa Boughner, the president of the Grand Rapids-based , said. The strategy includes future expansion to other lakeshore communities like Muskegon. She said will allow the center to make a greater impact by providing better access to services. 'We do offer many services. A lot of them are family support services, so everything from signing up for SNAP or health insurance, or navigating even something as simple as a DTE bill when there's a language barrier that becomes a larger task,' Boughner said. Tri-Cities Puentes Initiative serves Grand Haven, Spring Lake and Ferrysburg. It is known for a variety of initiatives, including organizing the Hispanic Heritage Fiesta in Grand Haven, which takes place in September. The nonprofit also provides college scholarships and leadership programs. Boughner said the center will continue those programs and try to help address the biggest issues facing the lakeshore Latino community. 'A lot of them are those wraparound family support services. It's the food insecurity, it's the housing insecurity, it's with everything in the immigration world right now, it's making sure that you are receiving the right information,' Boughner said. Boughner says the goal is to help families thrive in West Michigan. 'It's like me giving you a box of tools and saying, 'I hope you figure out how to use them.' Well, the center is going to give you the box of tools, but we're going to show you one by one how to use that tool to really move the needle in your life,' Boughner said. Corewell Health invites trauma survivors, caregivers for event

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Corewell Health is celebrating survivors of serious injuries and the doctors and nurses who saved them. The Grand Rapids-based hospital system is hosting a trauma survivors' event at Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park Tuesday evening. 'This is an event where we bring survivors of trauma, their families and caregivers all together to reconnect, to reflect on the power and heroism that a lot of our patients sustain to go through and recover from trauma,' Dr. Alistair Chapman, division chief for acute care surgery at Corewell Health, said. 'It's powerful, it's emotional as you can imagine, it's really uplifting.' He said the 'full circle moment' allows both survivors and their caregivers to reflect on the trauma and aftermath. Corewell in Grand Rapids is the Level 1 Trauma Center for 13 counties, including Ionia, Kent, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana and Ottawa. It also has the only regional burn center. 'We care for about 4,000 patients a year that sustain trauma. We're the second-busiest trauma center in the state and we really pride ourselves on providing this service for our community,' Chapman said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Meijer stores collecting used or unneeded baby gear to be recycled

After a fall event resulted in tons of baby gear collected for recycling, another opportunity from Grand Rapids-based grocer Meijer is underway. Now through May 17, Meijer will collect unneeded, expired, or damaged baby items and will give customers an mPerks coupon code to clip for purchasing new baby gear. Included in the items collected are baby car seats and strollers. Meijer's inaugural baby gear recycling event took place last fall. According to Meijer, the fall event was deemed a success after stores collected more than 13 tons, or 26,000 pounds of baby gear for recycling. 'We know spring is a time when many families are looking to declutter and refresh their homes. That's why we're excited to bring back our baby gear recycling event — giving customers a convenient, responsible way to recycle unneeded or damaged baby items,' said Marlys Roberts, director of merchandise at Meijer, in a written statement. 'By participating, they not only make space during spring cleaning but also help reduce landfill waste and earn rewards through mPerks.' Items that customers turn in, according to Meijer, are recycled by the retailer's partners to create new products. Materials from the items, like old car seats, booster seats, strollers, are recycled into a variety of products, including pallets, plastic buckets and construction materials such as steel beams and carpet padding, the retailer said. Mother's Day: Dozens of metro Detroit restaurants ready with special menus Customers can bring eligible baby gear items to a designated area near the customer service desk at their local Meijer supercenter store. With the item drop-off, customers receive a code to enter in their mPerks account for a 25% coupon to use on a baby gear item. The coupon, Meijer says, can be used two times and needs to be redeemed by May 31. Other restrictions also apply. The privately owned and family-operated Midwest grocer and retailer has more than 500 supercenters, grocery stores, neighborhood markets, and express locations throughout the Midwest. Meijer sets opening day for newest neighborhood market in Clarkston

Meijer, the Grand Rapids-based multi-state Midwest grocer and retailer, announced that another small footprint store will open next month. On Wednesday, Meijer announced that its new 50,000-square-foot market at 5820 Waldon Road in Clarkston will open on April 30. The store is located near Sashabaw Road and the Interstate 75 freeway. Part of the Walden Village development, Meijer's new Independence Market is the fifth Michigan location of its smaller-footprint neighborhood markets. Fairfax Market in Cleveland opened last year. 'Independence Market is committed to serving our new neighbors with value and convenience that makes it easy to get in and out quickly,' Independence Market Store Director Robert Lajcaj said in a news release. 'Our team has been working hard to get the store ready to open with a great assortment of local and national brand products and we can't wait to welcome our neighbors next month.' Meijer's small-format stores are meant to have a neighborhood grocer appeal and vibe. While Meijer neighborhood markets are smaller, they offer a large selection of grocery goods, like fresh meat, produce, and deli items. The store also carries national brands and its own Meijer brand. There will also be a bakery. Like its other neighborhood markets, Independence Market will also focus on offering and carrying thousands of locally sourced products. Those products include coffee from Shaded Bloom Coffee Roasters, skin care products from Allow Nourishment, and ice cream from Cook's Dairy Farm, according to a news release. Its cafe space will feature items like coffee and Latin Street food from Honcho in Clarkston. Honcho restaurant is from Union Joints restaurant group, which operates more than a dozen metro Detroit restaurants, including Union Woodshop in Clarkston and Vinsetta Garage in Berkley. A floral and gift shop Health and beauty care products Pet food and supplies About 80 team members will be employed at the new Independence Market. Meijer says its team will earn competitive wages, have access to health benefits and a 401(k) program with a company match. Meijer has four other smaller-format neighborhood markets. The first was Bridge Street Market in Grand Rapids, followed by Woodward Corner Market in Royal Oak, Capital City Market in Lansing, and Rivertown Market on East Jefferson in Detroit. Privately owned and family-operated Meijer has more than 500 supercenters, grocery stores, neighborhood markets, and express locations in several Midwest states. Independence store hours will be 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
