Bodycam video shows police shooting that killed man at South Side Chicago assisted living center

Newly released body camera video shows a deadly confrontation between Chicago police officers and a man with a knife at an assisted living facility in the South Side's Grand Crossing neighborhood. It all started around 2:50 a.m. Monday, May 6, when officers responded to a call responded to a call of a person with a butcher knife threatening residents inside Grand Regency of Jackson Park Supportive Living, at 1448 E. 75th St. Grand Regency of Jackson Park is advertised online as a program for adults between the ages of 22 and 64 with physical disabilities who need help maintaining their independence. Officers went to the unit where the man lived, and opened the door with a key when the man would not open the door himself. When the officers saw the man with a knife, they used Tasers. Police said when those Tasers were not effective, officers shot the man and killed him. The man, identified as 47-year-old Alfonzo Wright, died at the scene. None of the officers were hurt. A few hours later, police found another man, 58-year-old Keith Harding, stabbed to death in the same building. Police believe the suspect with the knife killed Harding before he was killed by police.

Man stabbed to death by suspect later shot and killed by CPD officers at South Side assisted living facility, police say

A man was found stabbed to death in the same South Side assisted living facility where Chicago police later shot and killed a man with a knife who was threatening other residents early Monday, police said. Around 2:50 a.m. Monday, Chicago police officers responded to a call of a person with a butcher knife threatening residents inside Grand Regency of Jackson Park Supportive Living, an assisted living community at 1448 E. 75th St. in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, police said. Officers went to the unit where the man lived and tried to talk to him, and he came at them with a knife. Police first used Tasers on the man, but he continued advancing toward them with a knife in his hand, and police shot and killed him. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and police recovered a knife at the scene. A few hours later, shortly after 6:30 a.m., 58-year-old Keith Harding was found dead inside a unit at the same building. He had suffered cuts to the arm and neck, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they suspect the man with the knife who was shot and killed is the same man who killed Harding. Grand Regency of Jackson Park is advertised online as a program for adults between the ages of 22 and 64 with physical disabilities who need help maintaining their independence. One neighbor who has lived there for two years said she hears people arguing there all the time — and it is starting to be a scary place to live. "I don't feel safe," said Maxine Johnson. "I feel scared all the time." CBS News Chicago reached out to the assisted living facility, which said they are fully cooperating with police in their investigation. "Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this event. The wellbeing and safety of our residents, staff, and community remain our highest priority," COO David Porknoy said in a statement. The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on routine administrative duties as the Civilian Office of Police Accountability investigates the fatal shooting. Second person found dead at same South Side facility where knife-wielding man was fatally shot by police early Monday

CHICAGO — A second person was found dead at the same South Side facility where a knife-wielding man was fatally shot early Monday morning by Chicago police officers. Authorities say the second man was found with cuts on his body, on the same floor as the man fatally shot by police. Police have opened a death investigation but aren't saying yet if the two incidents are connected. The Cook County Medical Examiner has also not yet determined what caused the death of the man found with cuts on his body. 'These cases will be investigated thoroughly by all of the respective bodies,' Mayor Brandon Johnson said. 'I'll have a conversation, a deeper conversation, with the (police) superintendent to get a better understanding of what went on.' Police were called to the Grand Regency of Jackson Park Supportive Living facility in the 1400 block of East 75th Street, in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, just before 3 a.m. Monday when a man with a knife was threatening people inside the facility. Knife-wielding man fatally shot by police at living facility in Grand Crossing, CPD says Police say officers located the man's unit inside the facility and confronted him, ordering him to drop the knife. They deployed their Tasers, but the man — still armed with a knife — was not subdued and advanced at officers, at which time they shot him. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police continue to investigate the officer-involved fatal shooting, and the Chicago Police Department says there's body-camera footage of the incident. Concerns about facility Four years ago, Sherry Nicholas was found dead inside her apartment at the same facility where Monday morning's incident happened. That case remains unsolved. The Nicholas family told WGN-TV they have a cousin who still lives at the Grand Regency of Jackson Park Supportive Living facility. The cousin reportedly told family members he feels unsafe. 'I feel kind of sorry for them. I feel like they need extra security, and if not, they should close the facility down so this won't keep happening,' Wendy Nicholas, a relative of the aforementioned cousin, said. Cook County authorities searching for man who fled courthouse after court ruling A spokesperson for the facility issued the following statement in light of Monday's incident: 'Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this event. The wellbeing and safety of our residents, staff, and community remain our highest priority. We are cooperating fully with the authorities as they conduct their investigation, and we are committed to supporting our residents and staff throughout this difficult time.'
