Chris Evans misses ovation as he skips film premiere for heartwarming reason
Captain America actor Chris Evans didn't join Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza and Charlie Day at Cannes Film Festival this week for the premiere of Ethan Coen's Honey Don't! Actor Chris Evans has revealed why he missed his new film's premiere earlier this weekend. He was noticeably absent when the rest of the leading cast and director Ethan Coen were met with applause at its recent debut screening. The upcoming film Honey Don't! had its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival on Friday night ahead of its theatrical release later this year. It was part of this year's Midnight Screenings schedule of the annual event in France. Chris, 43, was absent from the screening at Grand Théâtre Lumière in convention centre Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, where the festival is held. He also wasn't with his co-stars Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza and Charlie Day at a subsequent photocall for the film later on yesterday. The actor - best known for playing Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - confirmed his absence from the festival in a post on his Instagram Story today. He told his followers on the platform that he had been celebrating his mother Lisa Evan's milestone 70th birthday instead. Alongside a photo of his colleagues, Chris wrote earlier: "I wish I could've been with my incredible cast and filmmakers at Cannes, but it was my mother's 70th birthday and there are some things you just can't miss! Congrats everyone!" Margaret leads the cast of Honey Don't! in the role of Honey O'Donahue, a private detective who looks into a series of deaths connected to a "mysterious" church. Chris is said to play a "charismatic cult guru" in the upcoming film. The premiere at Cannes Film Festival took place earlier this weekend, with director Ethan, 67, and his co-writer Tricia Cooke joined by some of the cast for it. And there was a standing ovation that lasted more than six minutes following the screening of the film in the early hours of Saturday. Ethan - known for films like No Country for Old Men (2007) - thanked the audience for their support. He told those in attendance at the screening: "Thank you all so much. That's so gratifying. We're so happy you liked the movie." Margaret - who starred alongside Demi Moore in the film The Substance (2024), which won an Oscar in March - also expressed gratitude over the reception. Amid applause, she told fans: "Thank you guys so much. I love you guys." Honey Don't! was just one of the films screened in Cannes after this year's festival launched last week on May 13. Others shown during the festival included the History of Sound and the Mastermind, which both star actor Josh O'Connor. This year's Cannes Film Festival came to an end last night in the city, with Honey Don't! having been the final Midnight Screening. The festival had run for 12 days this month and concluded with its Closing Ceremony.

Flats steal the spotlight: Cannes Red Carpet experiences a stylish revolution underfoot
TIL Creatives Flats steal the spotlight: Cannes Red Carpet experiences revolution The Cannes Film Festival, long equated with sky-high heels and tinsel glamour, saw a seismic shift this year—not in the faces above, but in the footwear below. For the first time, flat shoes confidently walked down the red carpet under ballgowns and tuxedos, transforming the red carpet into a platform for comfort, rebellion, and a hint of quirky style. This fashion revolution follows decades of controversy. In 2015, a group of women were allegedly refused entry to a screening for wearing flats, precipitating outrage around the world and the viral #flatgate backlash. Although festival organizers claimed there never was an official heels-only policy, pressure on women to totter in stilettos was palpable. The controversy sparked a tide of red-carpet protests, with Julia Roberts famously going barefoot in 2016 and Kristen Stewart taking off her heels in front of the cameras in 2018. Forward to 2025, and the official dress code has been revised: fancy shoes and sandals, with or without heels, are now officially allowed for evening premieres at the Grand Théâtre Lumière. But the festival's fashion police are still strict on other matters, outlawing nudity, transparent dresses, and bulked-up gowns that might block traffic. This year, the red carpet glittered not only with diamonds but with ballet shoes, jeweled sandals, and even designer loafers. Jury president Greta Gerwig spearheaded the movement in black satin Roger Vivier flats, announcing, "I love a heel, but I also love to dance—and you can't dance in pain". Jane Fonda was seen in silver Margaux Mary Janes, Margaret Qualley in sequined Chanel ballet shoes, and directors Alice Rohrwalker and Molly Manning Walker in Prada loafers. The social media went wild with acclamation for the new style of red carpet shoes. "Flats at Cannes? At last, the revolution we needed!" tweeted a fan, another proclaimed, "My feet are crying tears of joy just viewing." With the festival's new regulations, Cannes is embracing a more comfortable and inclusive definition of glamour. As the curtain comes down on another year, one thing is certain: the red carpet will never be quite the same again—nor, for that matter, our feet.

The ‘must-watch' film of 2025 just received a 19-minute standing ovation at Cannes
Joachim Trier's film Sentimental Value has been praised at the Cannes Film Festival with an incredibly long standing ovation. Sentimental Value has made history at Cannes as it received a 19-minute standing ovation – the third longest ovation in the festival's history. It premiered at the Grand Théâtre Lumière on Wednesday night and wowed the audience with a tale about a successful actor who is dealing with crippling stage fright and complicated relationships with her family. The comedy-drama is reportedly moving and meditates on sisterhood, fatherhood, and abandonment. The film is set in Oslo and comes from Danish-born Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier, who was praised for his 2021 film The Worst Person in the World. Starring Renate Reinsve (who also appeared in The Worst Person in the World), Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Elle Fanning and Cory Michael Smith, it has a completely stacked cast who all looked in awe by the reception of the film. The festival has become known for some outrageously long standing ovations to show the audience's admiration for a film. In top spot is Guillermo del Toro's 2006 Pan's Labyrinth with 22 minutes, then the 2004 documentary film Fahrenheit 9/11 taking second spot with 20 minutes. So far at the 2025 festival, The History of Sound starring Josh O'Connor and Paul Mescal received a nine-minute standing ovation, while Pillion got an eight-minute applause. Scarlett Johannson's directorial debut, Eleanor The Great, received a six-minute ovation, as did Highest 2 Lowest from Spike Lee. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme received a seven-and-a-half-minute ovation, and Die, My Love starring Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence received an impressive nine-minute ovation. The film has also received a huge Rotten Tomatoes score with a 100% ranking from the 10 critics who have already released their reviews of the film. For Indie Wire, David Ehrlich said: 'A layered masterpiece that 'The Worst Person in the World' director Joachim Trier has been working toward for his entire career.' Richard Lawson said for Vanity Fair: 'Trier has once again crafted a film that is graceful and limber, thoughtful and surprising. Sentimental Value doesn't land with the same wallop as 'Worst Person', but it is plenty affecting in its own insightful, poignant way.' For Variety, Peter Debruge said: 'I tend to think of 'therapy through filmmaking' as a bad thing, by which I mean that artists with unresolved personal issues would do better to sort those matters out in private. Joachim Trier's 'Sentimental Value' offers an inspiring exception.' Got a story? Cannes Film Festival: Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value Earns 2025's Longest Standing Ovation with 19-Minute Praise
Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier premiered his new film Sentimental Value at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night, receiving an extraordinary 19-minute standing ovation. The screening took place at the Grand Théâtre Lumière and marked Trier's return to the festival after his 2021 hit The Worst Person in the World. That film earned actress Renate Reinsve the Best Actress award and two Oscar nominations for Trier. Sentimental Value is part of the official competition lineup at Cannes, making it a strong contender for the Palme d'Or. Trier again teams up with Renate Reinsve, who stars alongside Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Elle Fanning. All four actors attended the red carpet event before the film's screening, as per Deadline. The film tells the story of Nora, played by Reinsve, a stage actress who reconnects with her estranged father, Gustav (Skarsgård), a once-famous filmmaker. Nora's younger sister Agnes (Lilleaas) also joins the reunion. Gustav offers Nora a role in his comeback film, but when she turns it down, the part is given to a rising Hollywood star, played by Fanning. This leads to complex family dynamics and unresolved emotional tensions. Trier said, 'I wept a lot making this film because I was so moved by the actors.' He described Sentimental Value as a deeply personal story, set in a beautiful old wooden home in Oslo that he called 'a character in the film.' Elle Fanning's role in the film came from her own enthusiasm for Trier's work. She said in Cannes, 'I am a massive fan. I think The Worst Person in the World is easily one of the best films in the last decade or even longer.' She added, 'When Joachim sent me the script I read it and I was just crying and crying by the final page. It is so emotional.' Fanning flew to Oslo between filming A Complete Unknown and a new Predator film in New Zealand. Trier praised her performance, saying, 'She is a real mensch, a really kind and collaborative, cool person.' Sentimental Value is already gaining strong buzz for the Palme d'Or. While Cannes doesn't officially track ovation lengths, the 19-minute applause places it among the longest in recent years. The film was pre-bought by Neon, the distributor behind the last five Palme d'Or winners. Mubi holds the rights in other regions. Trier, who often collaborates with the same team, described the process as a family working together.
