The fall trek will find the group not only supporting their 2024 album, Blu Wav, but celebrating the 25th anniversary of their classic 2000 album, The Sophtware Slump. The tour kicks off Sept. 11 at the Observatory North Park in San Diego and wraps Oct. 18 at Union Transfer in Philadelphia. Tickets for all shows will go on sale Friday, May 9 at 10 a.m. local time, with full info on the band's website. More from Rolling Stone Pedro the Lion will provide support for most of the first half of the tour, while Greg Freeman will open during most of the second half. Openers for Grandaddy's Sept. 18 show in Seattle and Oct. 17 show in Washington, D.C. will be announced at a later date. Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle wrote and recorded much of The Sophtware Slump alone with — as legend has it — music equipment he had to return to the electronics store before the refund window expired. Arriving in May 2000, the album perfectly captured the inflection point of the early internet era as digital and human worlds, past and present, began to intersect. In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2020, Lytle even joked about predicting Google Earth on the song, 'Miner at the Dial-a-View,' which tells the story of a laborer digging for ore on a distant planet. 'He goes into a bar and puts money in [a machine that resembles tabletop video poker] and punches in the coordinates on Earth of his house, so he's looking at his house and he sees this other dude pulling into the driveway and hanging out with his wife,' Lytle said. 'So that's what the song is about, and [years later] I was just like, 'That's fucking Google Earth.' So maybe somebody working at Google is a Grandaddy fan and owes me some money.' As for their most recent project, Grandaddy released Blu Wav last February, with the album marking the group's first since LP of all new material since 2017's Last Place. Like many albums released in 2000, The Sophtware Slump leaned into Y2K themes like the increasing impact of technology on the environment. Fast forward to the present, and this topic remains just as relevant — if not more so. Back in 2020, Grandaddy reissued The Sophtware Slump to mark its 20th anniversary. Their latest album, Blue Wav, was released in 2024 via Dangerbird.
