Celebrate 10 Years of Perfectly Adorable Pop Culture Art From Scott C
There's no mistaking the artwork of Scott Campbell. It's funny, it's colorful, and even though it can look simple, it still somehow captures a moment of pop culture nostalgia in a few quick brushstrokes. Campbell is best known for his ongoing series called Great Showdowns, which we've previously covered on the site. But, Showdowns are not the only thing he does. He also does large-scale works, creates books, and helps with design concepts—and everything has been building up to one big, epic, mega show, which is happening this weekend.
It's fittingly called 'The Big Show' and it opens at 6 p.m. June 7 in New York City. That'll be your first chance to buy originals big and small, prints of several new pieces (including the Steven Spielberg and Hayao Miyazaki pieces below), and more. It'll then remain on display through June 28, with leftovers going online at 1 p.m. ET June 12. Click here for the address, hours, and more.
Basically, though, this is a show that celebrates Campbell's entire body of work, which ranges from huge, sweeping pop culture collections to original concepts, book illustrations, and more.
'I have had exhibitions in the past to celebrate my book releases and various other popular culture and conceptual experiences, but I have never had an exhibition that encompasses all of these worlds together before,' Campbell told io9 via email. 'I have accumulated quite a body of work over these past 10 years from various projects and have experienced many life changes from moving to Los Angeles to meeting my wife and starting a wonderful little family. The influences for the stories and ideas for these paintings has evolved over the years along with these experiences. Seeing everything together on these walls is like walking through these experiences again. And with the release of my first graphic novel series in the fall, a project I have been working on since the late 2000s, it felt like the exact right time to reflect on all of this. I find great comfort in all of these worlds and am very glad to be spending time with them again.'
Below, we have images of just a few of the over 100 original watercolor paintings, sculptures, prints, books, pins, and more that are in the show. Several of these are new but most pieces have previously been released. They've just never been on display, or for sale, in their original form.
Presented by Spoke Art, 'The Big Show' opens at 6 p.m. June 7 at Harman Projects, 210 Rivington St., New York, NY. It'll then remain on display through June 28, with leftovers going online at 1 p.m. EST June 12. Click here for additional information.
