Preparations for Greater Bengaluru elections in next four months: DKS
Mysuru: 'Preparations for the Greater Bengaluru elections will be made in the next four months. Reservation and zone-wise divisions will be created first. There is no point in delaying the elections,' said DCM DK Shivakumar. Speaking to the media at the Mysore airport on Friday, when asked when the Greater Bengaluru Bill will be held after the Governor's assent, he said, 'An all-party meeting will be held on this. They will also be consulted on how the divisions should be made. Everyone has given their suggestions in the House on this. A cabinet sub-committee was formed. 90 percent of their opinions have been considered. The elections will be held by taking everyone into confidence. There will be a delay in adding new areas. The way things are now will continue as they are.' When asked about the mockery of the name Quarter Bengaluru by Opposition Leader R. Ashok, he said, 'This bill should have been opposed when it was first introduced. Why did they agree to implement it in the House? They could have said Quarter Bengaluru, Full Bengaluru, etc. But why did they give suggestions in the House? If the opposition do not speak that much, they are less respected right? That is why they are speaking. We will give them whatever respect they are given to a part of Bengaluru.' Shivakumar will finish his work. But when asked about the delay in changing the name of Ramanagara, he said, 'Who said it is delayed? It will be announced under the law at a good auspicious muhurat, at an auspicious time. I will inform you about the time soon.' When asked about the Congress' decision not to use the Pahalgam attack for politics, he said, 'Our consensus decision is that the country is bigger than the party or the individual. We had told the Prime Minister that we will support whatever decision you take, and that we should not bow to any country.' 'Our MPs are signing and giving it to the Prime Minister. We have said that we should inform them about the developments. Other countries are talking about our country's self-respect. We have not been subjected to anyone's yoke since the time of Indira Gandhi. It is our right to ask for a discussion in Parliament in such a situation,' he said. When asked about illegal resorts in Kabini protected areas, he said, 'Give me a list of these and we will discuss them.' When asked if he would give good news for his 63rd birthday celebration, he said, 'I did not celebrate my birthday this year. I did not want to go out and I went to observe the state's forest wealth with my family members. May you all bless me in this regard.'

BBMP to be replaced with Greater Bengaluru Authority, says Siddaramaiah as bill comes into effect
Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that the Governor Thawarchand Gehlot has given assent to the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, and it will come into effect on Thursday. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will be replaced with the newly formed Greater Bengaluru Authority, said the Chief Minister while speaking to the media at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru. The Greater Bengaluru Bill has been passed in both the Houses of the state legislature, he added. "Bengaluru will be known as Greater Bengaluru now. There is a possibility of forming at least three corporations within the Greater Bengaluru region. The Chief Minister will serve as the chairperson of the authority, and appropriate decisions will be taken in the coming days," Siddaramaiah said. The Karnataka Government had officially notified the formation of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) on Tuesday, marking the end of the BBMP as the city's governing body. The state government has announced that the land coming under the BBMP has been notified as the land which will come under the GBA as per Section 1 (2) of the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024. Until the procedures are done, the concerned officers will carry out powers and responsibilities in the BBMP. The Urban Development department has stated that an administrator would be appointed following the BBMP ceasing to exist. Once the administrator is appointed, the rules and guidelines will be formed. As per the GBA Act, the Authority under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister will have to be formed within 120 days. The Bengaluru Development Minister will be the Vice President. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar is in-charge of the Bengaluru Development portfolio. The legislators, ministers from Bengaluru, mayors of corporations, Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) Commissioner, Bengaluru Water and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) President, Managing Directors of Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) will be members. The Deputy Commissioner of Bengaluru Urban District, Bengaluru Police Commissioner and others would also be members. Sources said that the government wants to create three city corporations with 125 wards each, and boundaries will be identified. As per the act, all the regions coming under the GBA will be called as Bengaluru region. The Congress government in Karnataka on June 23, 2024, tabled the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, 2024, in the Assembly, which proposes to split the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) into many city corporations in the Greater Bengaluru Area. The government maintained that the Bill has been moved with the objective of effective, participatory, and responsive urban governance in the Greater Bengaluru Area. It also proposes to establish a Greater Bengaluru Authority for coordinating and supervising the development of the Greater Bengaluru Area. 'The provisions of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Act, 2020 (Act 53 of 2020) are inadequate to govern Bengaluru as they don't constitute any institutions that can address the fragmentation of governance in Bengaluru due to the multiplicity of civic agencies and lack of coordination between them,' the act states. The BJP and JD (S) are opposed to the implementation of the act. The BJP has staged a protest and called the move unconstitutional as it contradicts the 74th Constitutional Amendment. A representation was also made to the Governor in this regard.

3-day protest against price hikes, announces Oppn leader Ashoka
Bengaluru: Opposition Leader R Ashoka announced that the BJP will stage protests in Bengaluru against the price hikes imposed by the Congress government. Speaking to reporters at the BJP office in Malleshwaram, he said protests will be held for three days starting April 28 in front of all zonal commissioners' offices. The protests will address increases in milk, electricity, property tax, and parking fees. He accused the Congress of imposing heavy taxes on Bengaluru residents and said pamphlets will be distributed door-to-door. He also criticized the government for postponing BBMP elections and said protests will cover this issue as well. Regarding the suspension of MLAs, Ashoka said discussions were held with the Speaker. He argued that suspensions should be limited to a specific session and withholding allowances outside of that is unconstitutional. He stated that a legal battle will be fought against the Greater Bengaluru Bill. He remarked that if the Governor signs it, Congress claims it favors them, but if he doesn't, they criticize it as a BJP move. On the KAS exam issue, Ashoka noted that the High Court has given its verdict. He recalled that during the assembly session, he raised the issue, and the CM promised to consider a re-examination with an open mind after the verdict. Ashoka said they will monitor the government's decision and continue protests if necessary. Criticizing Congress leaders for questioning the country's soldiers, Ashoka asked who they trust if not the armed forces. He stressed that the nation must unitedly condemn terrorist attacks. Terrorists targeted and killed people identifying them as Hindus, he said, adding that it's wrong to criticize soldiers or dismiss espionage concerns. He questioned who failed when the Rameshwaram Cafe bomb blast occurred, when a cooker bomb exploded, and when ministers faced honeytrap attempts. He urged Congress not to speak on matters concerning the nation's soldiers. Ashoka emphasized that sleeper cells within the country must be neutralized before targeting Pakistan. He alleged that these cells receive support, bail, and legal aid, and quoted PM Narendra Modi as saying such elements will not be spared.
