African Energy Week (AEW) 2025: Mauritania Energy Minister to Showcase Investment-Ready Projects

Mauritania's Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Mohamed Ould Khaled, will attend African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025 — taking place from September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town — where he will promote the country's expanding portfolio of energy projects and underscore significant opportunities available to global investors. Following the commencement of production at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNG project earlier this year, Mauritania is entering a new phase of energy-driven economic transformation. At AEW 2025, Minister Khaled is expected to spotlight the country's strategic ambitions across both natural gas and green hydrogen sectors, while emphasizing Mauritania's investor-friendly regulatory environment and international partnership potential. Developed by bp and Kosmos Energy in collaboration with national oil companies SMH (Mauritania) and Petrosen (Senegal), the GTA development represents one of Africa's most promising LNG ventures. Phase one is set to produce 2.3 million tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG, with a planned second phase to increase capacity to over 5 mtpa. Backed by over 425 billion cubic meters of gas reserves, GTA will serve as a long-term supply source for international markets, particularly Europe, while delivering substantial revenue, job creation and infrastructure benefits for Mauritania. Building on this momentum, Mauritania is advancing plans to develop the nearby BirAllah gas field, which holds an estimated 80 trillion cubic feet of reserves and could produce up to 10 million tons of LNG annually. The project includes a proposed midstream gas-to-power facility under an Independent Power Producer agreement, with production targeted by 2030 and a total development cost of $17 billion. Beyond BirAllah, Mauritania's natural gas potential is further supported by smaller prospects such as Banda and Pelican, which hold a combined reserve of approximately 1.2 trillion cubic feet. Minister Khaled's participation at AEW 2025 underscores Mauritania's commitment to securing global capital and technology partnerships, as the country positions itself as a competitive and forward-looking destination for energy investment. Beyond hydrocarbons, Mauritania is fast-tracking its clean energy agenda, aiming to produce 12.5 million tons of green hydrogen annually by 2035. The government is proactively advancing policy frameworks – becoming the first country in the world to pass a 'hydrogen code' law – to attract private sector investment and support project development. Key green hydrogen projects include the 30 GW Aman initiative by CWP Global and the 10 GW Project Nour led by Chariot, both of which leverage Mauritania's exceptional solar and wind resources. These projects are poised to position the country as a regional leader in low-carbon energy exports and industrialization. 'Minister Khaled's participation at AEW 2025 is a powerful statement of Mauritania's dedication to leveraging its energy resources for long-term economic transformation. As the country advances both LNG production and green hydrogen development, his engagement with global industry leaders and investors will be key to attracting the capital, technology and partnerships needed to turn Mauritania into a regional energy hub,' states NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber. BP and Kosmos Energy's GTA project successfully exports first LNG cargo

The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) Phase 1 project, a joint venture between bp and Kosmos Energy, has safely exported its first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the operation, located offshore Mauritania and Senegal. The landmark event, which took place after the completion of first cargo loading activities on 17 April 2025, establishes Mauritania and Senegal as LNG-exporting nations. The inaugural shipment of LNG was transferred to a carrier from the project's floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) vessel, located 10km offshore. Here, the natural gas was cryogenically cooled, liquefied and stored. The GTA Phase 1 project, once fully operational, is expected to yield approximately 2.4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG to meet global energy demands. Additionally, gas volumes will be allocated for domestic use in both Mauritania and Senegal once the necessary infrastructure is in place. The GTA project began extracting gas from its offshore fields, which lie between Senegal and Mauritania, in January of this year. The extraction process involves wells in deep waters, with depths of up to 2,850m. The gas is then conveyed to a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO), vessel situated 40km away, for processing. Following processing at the FPSO, where the gas is refined to remove condensate, water and impurities, it is piped to the floating LNG vessel. The gas is then cooled, liquefied and stored before being loaded onto LNG carriers for export. Kosmos Energy initiated LNG production in February. The first gas flow from the GTA project to the FPSO occurred on 31 December last year, signifying the start of the commissioning process. "BP and Kosmos Energy's GTA project successfully exports first LNG cargo" was originally created and published by Offshore Technology, a GlobalData owned brand. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Gas-to-power initiatives offer a vital solution to the continent's electricity access challenges while also providing a pathway to monetise, underutilised gas resources. With the right investments and collaborative efforts, Africa is poised to unlock the full potential of its gas sector, driving economic growth and energy security. Several large-scale projects are driving Africa's gas potential, with LNG exports seen as a critical part of the continent's energy future. Africa has the capacity to increase its LNG export capacity almost fourfold by 2040, says the AEC's report, with a projected 175 million tons of LNG per year. Currently, Africa's LNG exports stand at around 40 million tons, suggesting massive room for growth. Mozambique, a major growth driver for the continent's LNG sector, has the potential to achieve LNG export capacity of up to 50 million tons by 2040, though this potential has been tempered by security concerns, particularly in onshore areas. These challenges have led companies to look toward smaller offshore floating LNG (FLNG) solutions. For example, Eni's Coral North FLNG project in Mozambique is being developed incrementally as an offshore solution, though it remains smaller in scale than the onshore alternatives. Other key projects include significant developments in Senegal and Mauritania. These nations are set to become major LNG exporters, with developments such as the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project – co-led by bp and international partners – expected to play a pivotal role in the continent's LNG growth, especially as it progresses to its second phase. While the path to realising Africa's gas and LNG potential presents challenges, there are significant opportunities for growth. Developing both domestic and export markets is crucial to fully unlocking the continent's gas resources. Large-scale pipeline projects, such as the West African Gas Pipeline and Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, could play a vital role in connecting African gas to additional markets, including Europe. Although these projects face financing and political complexities, successful collaboration and strategic investments can pave the way for their advancement, unlocking new economic opportunities and expanding Africa's energy reach. Security remains one of the most significant risks, particularly in regions like Mozambique, where insurgencies have already disrupted major projects. While offshore FLNG projects, such as Coral North, provide a more flexible and secure option, they also come with higher capital costs and reduced production capacity compared to onshore facilities. Africa's growing role in the global energy market, along with its proximity to key international markets, positions it as a critical player in the future of natural gas. The Chamber's report emphasises that Africa's gas potential can be fully realised with the right investments, including de-risking strategies, improved regulatory frameworks, and greater collaboration among governments, industry stakeholders, and financiers. This year's African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies conference provides a platform for addressing challenges and opportunities within Africa's gas and LNG sector and discussing strategies for unlocking Africa's full energy potential. - Africa Energy Chamber
