Green Day's Political Masterpiece Is Relevant Again — And Rising

Green Day's American Idiot climbs the U.K. charts amid renewed interest, marking its two-hundredth ... [+] week on the Official Physical Albums list and nearing 900 weeks on the Rock & Metal tally. The group has produced some of the most successful tunes in pop-punk history, and he outfit's commercial success extends far beyond just that one subgenre. Within pop-punk, there may be no more successful album than American Idiot. Green Day's masterpiece turned 20 last year, and yet its message remains timely, especially considering the newly-elected president that just took power in the United States. It's possible that due to Trump's second term, and his many controversial orders, American Idiot may be taking on new significance. The project is gaining ground on the United Kingdom's music charts in a way that suggests there's renewed interest and excitement around the set, which may or may not be a coincidence. American Idiot appears on three charts in the U.K. this week. It rises on two of them and drops on a third—but only slightly. Green Day's blockbuster sits highest on the Official Physical Albums chart, pushing two spots to No. 81. It lifts by the same number of spaces on the Official Albums Sales ranking, though it settles at No. 84. American Idiot appears highest on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart, which makes sense, since competition isn't as intense on genre-specific rankings, when compared to those that deal solely with pure purchases of any project of any style. On that tally, Green Day dips from No. 11 to No. 12, but that's still dozens of spots higher than where the same project lands on the purchase-centric rosters. American Idiot is one of three albums by Green Day that appear on the U.K. charts this week. It lands on the most lists, though it sits lower on the purchase-only tallies than the band's other wins do on their respective rosters. Greatest Hits: God's Favorite Band declines by a few spots on both the Official Albums chart and the Official Albums Streaming ranking, appearing somewhere in the middle of both tallies. The group doubles up on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart, which lists only the bestselling full-lengths and EPs in those genres. Dookie, which helped turn the pop-punk upstarts into global superstars decades ago, declines a pair of rungs, making a home at No. 28 this week. American Idiot is having a big week at the moment, and not just because it's climbing after decades of popularity. This frame marks the title's two-hundredth stint on the Official Physical Albums ranking. Next frame, assuming that the collection will hold on — which seems like a given — it will reach 900 stints on the Official Rock & Metal Albums tally.
