Whitney Point participate in Ag in the Classroom
WHITNEY POINT, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Whitney Point students started their day by reading a book about growing crops, and after, got to touch and taste exactly what they read about. 2nd Graders at Caryl E Adams Elementary were visited by Broome County Executive Jason Garnar, and the team at Cornell Cooperative Extension's Ag in the Classroom program. Garnar read a book to the class called 'The Pie That Molly Grew.' The book was written by a local Tioga County author, and follows a girl named Molly as she plants a pumpkin seed, and watches it grow until it's ready to harvest and eat. 'One of the first lessons that we'll do within the classroom is, hey, where does your food come from? Nine times out of ten they'll say the grocery store. So, we want them to know that ag encompasses food, farming, and every aspect of their life really. So, we need them to know that at a young age,' said Program Lead for Ag in the Classroom Sarah Atwood. After reading the book, Atwood prepared pumpkin pie in a cup using only canned pumpkin, vanilla pudding, milk, and cinnamon. Atwood encouraged the kids to create their own pies in a bag at home. Dancing with D opens its doors on Clinton Street
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A new dance studio opened today on the historic East Clinton Street in Downtown Binghamton. Owner Dhyani James officially opened her Dancing with D dance studio today at 23 East Clinton Street. James says at Dancing with D, you can take classes in tap dancing, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, competition dance, and more. She says in the new space, she can finally fit all 28 of her competitive dancers in the same room for lessons. James says once the landlords found out she wanted to turn it into a dance studio, they wanted to completely renovate it for her. 'If you want it to be a dance studio, we've got to gut it. We've got to start from scratch, build new walls, and they were very patient and understanding of what I wanted to do, and they've created a beautiful space for the kids,' said James. Inside, there's dancing related artwork on the walls drawn by local artists. She teaches kids as young as 4 years old all the way up to seniors in high school. James plans to be open Monday through Saturday from 5:30 to 7:30, with extended hours on Saturdays. Find more by searching Dancing with D on Facebook. City Council overrides Mayor Kraham's veto on Good Cause Eviction law
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – As expected, the Democratically controlled Binghamton City Council has over-ridden Republican Mayor Jared Kraham's veto of the recently passed Good Cause Eviction law. The Council hastily called a special meeting for this afternoon to vote on the override after its meeting Wednesday was derailed by last minute concerns raised by the city's attorney. After a public comment period during which local landlords and realtors reiterated their objections to the legislation, the override was successful with all six Council members present voting for the law. Council President Mike Dundon was the only member absent. Good Cause Eviction would ban landlords from kicking out tenants in retaliation for complaining about conditions. It would also limit how much property owners can raise their rent. Kraham vetoed the law saying it would hurt the local real estate market.
