Cement industry's measures to reduce carbon footprint highlighted at Green Cementech conference

The 21st edition of CII Green Cementech got under way in Hyderabad on Thursday (May 15, 2025) with speakers highlighting the significance of the cement industry accelerating adoption of measures to reduce its carbon footprint. Addressing the opening session of the two day conference and expo, being organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with the Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA), Green Cementech 2025 chairman and Ambuja Cements managing director Ajay Kapur said sustainability means competition which in turn leads to growth. 'We must continue integrating futuristic technologies that transform how we produce, move and think about cement. The path ahead is challenging, but filled with opportunity,' he said. Joint MD of Sagar Cements S. Sreekanth Reddy said 'there is immense potential for deep decarbonisation in the cement industry - driven by renewable energy, artificial intelligence and digital innovations.' CII Green Cementech 2025 organisers, in a press release, said the event with 'Road towards Net Zero Carbon' as its theme aims to explore innovative strategies and initiatives to reduce the industry's carbon footprint. India's cement need was 450MT Later in a media interaction, Mr. Kapur and Mr. Reddy listed out some of the measures the cement industry is implementing, including waste heat recovery, renewable energy as well as use of municipal solid waste, especially waste plastics, as fuel alongside coal. The cement industry installed manufacturing capacity is around 680 million tonne. Last year, cement consumption of India was 450 MT. Green Cementech 2025 co-chairman and chief technical and chief sustainability officer of UltraTech Cement, Raju Goyal, told the conference that the cement sector in India stands as one of the most efficient in the world — delivering both economic and environmental value. National vice-chairman of Indian Green Building Council, Shekhar Reddy, increased availability of certified green products and incentives contribute to the momentum of green buildings programme.

Green Cementech 2025, a two day conference and expo dwelling on various facets of the cement industry, would get underway in Hyderabad on Thursday (May 15, 2025). It is the 21st edition of the event and to be organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)- Green Business Centre in partnership with the Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA). With 'Road towards Net Zero Carbon' as the theme, Green Cementech 2025 aims to serve as a platform for cement industry leaders and sustainability professionals to share, showcase and discuss latest developments in the net-zero transition. The event will feature presentations and discussions on the net-zero transition in the Indian cement industry. It will have more than 10 technical sessions, 50 national and international speakers, about 500 participants and as many as 70 stalls showcasing the latest technologies and services. Launch of two publications Energy Benchmarking for the Cement Industry: May 2025, Version 7.0; and Green Hydrogen as an alternative fuel for Indian Cement Industry, as well as a web tool for the cement sector besides felicitation of a distinguished personality from the cement sector will form part of the event, CII said in a release.
