Legal row landowners agree access for pylon survey

A group of landowners who refused access to their land to build a new pylon route have agreed to sign licences to grant access. Green Gen Cymru wants to develop an electricity connection between Lan Fawr Energy Park near Llanddewi Brefi, Ceredigion, to a new National Grid substation at Llandyfaelog, Carmarthenshire. The 132kV electricity connection could power more than 10,000 homes but several landowners had refused permission for company representatives to access their land for surveys. Ten people were due in Llanelli Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, but four reached an agreement with Green GEN Cymru before the hearing and the court heard the remaining six would sign licences to grant access. Green GEN Cymru withdrew the warrants against the four who reached the deal before the hearing "without consequence in costs" but the court was told this would be the last time the company was happy to scrap the costs. About 70 people gathered outside the court to support the landowners, including Plaid Cymru Members of the Senedd Adam Price and Cefin Campbell. Pylon plans could spark mass social unrest - Plaid Farmers in court in 'David v Goliath' pylon battle Green energy plan 'won't benefit' Welsh valley residents Judge Gwyn Jones rejected a request from the landowners' legal team to adjourn the case after they said not enough time had been given to consider all the evidence. The Towy-Teifi line is one of three major routes of pylons in Powys, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire, being proposed by Green GEN Cymru, each spanning several miles. Protesters have argued for the lines to be installed underground to protect the natural beauty of the areas. Green GEN Cymru said in a statement that it was pleased to have reached voluntary access agreements with landowners and thanked them for working with them. "For more than two years we have sought to reach voluntary access agreements with landowners so that Green GEN Cymru can conduct critical environmental surveys. Legal action has never been our chosen route," it said. "In all discussions with landowners, we have offered compensation for any potential disruption caused by surveys and to pay for independent professional advice. We will continue to do so as we work with landowners across our routes."

The Welsh villagers fighting Ed Miliband's pylons

Farmers in rural Wales are fighting Ed Miliband's nationwide pylon rollout by refusing to let an energy company onto their land. Campaigners against the Energy Secretary's plans say that landowners are willing to face criminal charges for blocking access to Green Gen Cymru (GGC), adding they are 'not going to mess about'. GGC wants to build a 60-mile-long network using 108ft tall pylons through the 'world class scenery' of the Tywi and Teifi valleys to connect onshore wind farm projects to the National Grid. But the project has met widespread opposition from residents, who say that Mr Miliband's only legacy as Energy Secretary is going to be destroying the British countryside. The strong resistance could prove a stumbling block for the Labour minister's plans to build hundreds of pylons across the country in his net zero push. Mr Miliband wants to make the energy grid carbon neutral by the end of the decade with new pylons, wind turbines and solar panels. In 2024 he vowed to 'take on the blockers, the delayers, the obstructionists' to achieve those aims. But he faces opposition across the UK, including a 114-mile pylon and cable scheme from Norwich to Tilbury, with more projects planned in Yorkshire and Northumberland. More than 100 affected landowners in rural Wales have been refusing access to their land for surveying, unless underground cables are 'seriously considered'.

Pylon route power line goes to final consultation

Consultation on a planned power line that would see a 31-mile pylon route built from Wales to Shropshire has begun. The Vyrnwy Frankton Project, a scheme to build a new substation near Cefn Coch in Powys and connect it to the national network at Lower Frankton in Shropshire, includes underground cables and an overhead line. Six consultation events have been set up in village halls and community centres from 27 February to 8 March by Green Gen Cymru. People will be able to view a digital 3D model of the route, the company said. This is expected to be the final route-wide consultation before a planning application is submitted. North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan has called on the company to consider building the route underground and said communities would be affected visually and by noise. Senior project manager Sean Taylor said the company had considered areas important for tourism and recreation, adding: "The route is planned to keep effects on these as low as we can, while balancing the effects on the landscape and the environment." Addressing effects on communities, he said: "We have carefully considered views to and from villages in designing the connection. As much as possible, we've used woodland and the natural shape of the landscape to help reduce potential visual effects." Mr Taylor said the project was "still open to influence" and the firm was committed to working closely with communities and stakeholders. In Shropshire, consultation events are being held at West Felton Village Hall on 27 February, Hordley & Bagley Village Hall on 28 February and Llanymynech Village Hall on 1 March. Events will be held in Wales at Llanfair Caereinion Public Hall on 6 March, Llansantffraid Community Centre on 7 March and Meifod Village Hall Community Centre on 8 March. The consultation will close on 16 April. Follow BBC Shropshire on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram.
