Bucs lose out on Aqib Talib in 2008 NFL Re-Draft by PFF, draft son of Hall of Famer
The PFF re-draft series has been a lot of fun to follow and now they have worked their way to the 2008 NFL Draft.
In 2008, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had the 20th pick in the draft, and they were able to get Kansas cornerback Aqib Talib. He had the talent of a top-ten pick but fell down the draft boards due to off-the-field concerns at the time. In this re-do scenario, he went in the top ten to the New England Patriots.
This means the Bucs have to get a new pick, and they find one in former second-round pick Chris Long, who fell to them at 20th overall in this exercise.
They write about the pick as, "Long didn't quite live up to the hype that comes with being a second-overall pick, but he was a productive pass rusher throughout his career. He recorded at least a 70.0 PFF pass-rush grade and 60 pressures in six seasons. Injuries derailed the end of his stint with the Rams, but he was a valuable piece of two consecutive Super Bowl teams — the Patriots in 2016 and the Eagles in 2017."
Of course, Long is the son of Hall of Famer Howie Long. While he didn't live up to his dad's legacy, he carved out a very meaningful and lasting legacy of his own.
Long now helps extend his legacy by a career in media, like his father, and he gets to tell stories and share moments from his career and others on his Greenlight Podcast.
