Greenville-Spartanburg Airport unveils new art piece ‘Correspondencia'
GREER, S.C. (WSPA) – Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport unveiled a new piece of artwork titled 'Correspondencia' Monday afternoon. 'At GSP, we believe that the customer experience goes beyond convenience and efficiency. It is also about creating a sense of place that is welcoming and inspiring to every traveler who visits our airport,' said Minor Shaw, chair of the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport Commission. 'Correspondencia is a powerful example of how public art can enrich that experience. It reflects the spirit of a community and invites moments of connection as people move through the airport.' The art piece was created through a collaboration with Rey Alfonso, a Cuban-born artist now residing in Greenville and Soteria at Work, a non-profit that uses deconstruction and woodworking to teach job skills to men working to thrive after incarceration. Founder and CEO of Soteria, Jerry Blassingame said, 'It means a lot because it shows the collaboration and community of a nonprofit who's working with men and women who are returning from prison and the artist community in the airport, which is a great way to show community and diversity and how we all need each other and how they're looking at people who are coming out of prison, not a second class citizens, but looking at people who are assets.' Correspondencia draws inspiration from handwritten letters, particularly those exchanged through air mail and from within prison walls. The piece features numbers, keys, and symbols reflective of the experiences of those who have faced incarceration. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Those without REAL ID may face additional TSA screenings: GSP officials
GREER, S.C. (WSPA) — Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) officials want travelers to be aware what they may face without a REAL ID. Related video: Why you may want to get a REAL ID soon According to the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV), the REAL ID ACT was passed by Congress in 2005. the law, officials said, establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards that can be used for federal purposes. Security procedures at GSP, a representative said, will largely remain unchanged for passengers, but those coming through the airport without a REAL ID 'may be subject to random additional screening at the TSA security checkpoint.' GSP said that 63% of South Carolinians already have a REAL ID, with more than 80% of air travelers being estimated to have one. How do I know if I have a REAL ID? If there is a star on your driver's license or state ID card, you have a REAL ID-compliant card. The star may be black or gold, completely filled in or just the outline. Either way, you're compliant. Several projects underway at GSP as airport expects another record-breaking travel year
GREER, S.C. (WSPA) – Almost one year ago, Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport broke ground on a $97 million parking garage but that isn't the only project happening at the airport. Millions pass through GSP Airport each year and that number is growing. 'We are seeing a record number of passengers coming through GSP. Last year, we had 2.8 million plus passengers travel through GSP and we expect 2025 to hit that three million mark,' said Tiffany Cherry, GSP Airport communications manager. To meet the demands of more travelers, several projects are underway. Breeze Airways announces 3 new destinations from GSP In January 2023, the airport started work to improve traffic flow in and around the terminal. 'We have been doing our TRIP project, our Terminal Roadway Improvement Project, where we expanded the front curb and set new designated lanes.' The project, which also improved traffic flow with roundabouts, is in its final stage and is expected to be completed in the next month. Construction on the newest parking garage is continuing. 'We are under construction for a third parking garage that has broken ground last February and you can see the building coming up very nicely and that is going to be parking garage C, but it will also be our consolidated rental car facility,' said Cherry. The new parking garage will provide 1,500 additional parking spaces, which is something airport officials said is needed. Spartanburg Spring Fling canceled, will not return: here is why 'We are seeing parking at a high demand especially in our garage parking,' explained Cherry. GSP is also anticipates bringing in a new restaurant concept to the terminal in late spring to early summer which is expected to have a local flair. The airport has partnered with Plus Plus and the Children's Museum of the Upstate to build a new children's play area. A $6.8 million project to add two new gates, A0 and B5, to the terminal is expected to be complete by June 2025. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
