CdM boys' volleyball overpowered by Mira Costa

MANHATTAN BEACH — Corona del Mar had not lost in more than a month, but with a hot start on its home floor, Manhattan Beach Mira Costa reminded the spectators why it was the top seed in the CIF Southern Section boys' volleyball playoffs. Mira Costa took charge with heavy jump serving in claiming 12 of the initial 14 points, as the Mustangs stampeded past the Sea Kings 25-13, 25-21, 25-20 to secure a spot in the Division 1 final. The power ratings prevailed, as the top seed in each pool of the top division advanced. Mira Costa (31-2), a finalist a year ago, will meet Huntington Beach (34-3) in the section championship match on Friday, May 16 at 7 p.m. at Cerritos College. 'It definitely sticks,' said Mira Costa coach Greg Snyder, whose team was the runner-up to Los Angeles Loyola last year. 'I think whoever loses the CIF finals has a clear advantage for the next one. They just get hungrier. If you just look at the track record of what's happened, I think it hasn't been since Newport [Harbor] that they've won twice in a row. 'Usually, the team that finishes second the year before wins the next year. I'm hoping that's the case this year. I hope that trend continues, but we'll have to play it and find out because Huntington's a very, very good team.' Senior setter Andrew Chapin distributed 31 assists to go with three service aces, three kills and three block assists to lead the Mustangs. Sophomore outside hitter Mateo Fuerbringer had nine kills and three aces. Apart from its serving, Mira Costa also made matters difficult for CdM (23-6) with its defensive effort, both in retrieving balls on broken plays and in blocking. Early in the third set, junior libero Justin Warner tracked down a ball near the back wall, and senior opposite Grayson Bradford eventually finished the play. 'It's a momentum-killer,' Snyder said of Warner keeping the point alive. 'It crushes their spirits, a play like that. I'm not saying they gave up or anything like that, not at all, but when you're in a tough rally and a play like that happens and you lose that point, it does take a toll mentally on a team. … They still fought hard, … but that was a big play. … It gave us momentum back.' Senior outside hitter Thatcher Fahlbusch added 11 kills and two block assists. Senior middle blocker Alex Heins produced eight kills and five block assists, and junior middle blocker Wyatt Davis contributed three additional block assists for the Mustangs. Corona del Mar was attempting to reach the CIF finals for the second time in three seasons (the Sea Kings lost to Newport Harbor in 2023), which would have been its 18th championship game appearance overall. Junior outside hitter Ben Brown's 11 kills paced the Sea Kings. Junior setter Drake Foley dished out 25 assists. Junior opposite Brady Gant (seven kills) and junior middle blocker Jack Robinson each finished with 1½ total blocks. Gant had a team-high seven digs, and UCLA-bound libero Brogan Glenn contributed five digs. 'We knew that going in, that we couldn't give them any free balls, any opportunities,' CdM coach Katey Thompson said of facing the Mustangs, who are now 3-0 in head-to-head matches this season. 'Our goal was to try to make them earn them. Clearly, that didn't happen in the first set, but hopefully this is something we can learn from as we go into regionals. 'I think every time that we've played them, we've gotten a little bit better, so hopefully we're able to utilize this.' Corona del Mar, which earned a pair of four-set victories over Beckman and San Clemente in pool play, awaits the CIF State Southern California regional playoffs. Those brackets will be released on Sunday, May 18.

Mira Costa boys volleyball sweeps Loyola to end 11-match losing streak against rival

It was high school volleyball at its finest. 'Absolutely incredible!' That's how Mira Costa boys volleyball coach Greg Snyder described his team's performance Friday night following the latest chapter in a fierce rivalry between two of the top programs in the nation. The visiting Mustangs (20-1) took command early and never let up, sweeping Loyola 25-19, 25-18, 25-20 to establish themselves as the favorites to win the Southern Section's highest division. Leading the way was Grand Canyon University signee Thatcher Fahlbusch, a senior whose 12 kills came when his squad needed them most. The Mustangs avenged a loss in the finals of the Best of the West Tournament in San Diego two weeks ago — and ended a nightmarish losing streak against the Cubs. 'We served much better and got them out of system,' said Fahlbusch, whose younger brother Blake, a USC commit, was weakened by the flu but still had five kills for Loyola. 'Our main strength is in numbers — they can't key on one guy. We'd lost 11 in a row to them so we wanted to put an end to that.' Despite living in Manhattan Beach, the brothers decided when Thatcher was in eighth grade to go to Loyola, but he transferred after his sophomore year. He is glad he made the switch — and so are his teammates. 'It's all love,' Thatcher said. 'This is an awesome environment to play in.' Adding 12 kills, the last coming on the Mustangs' third match point, was Mateo Fuerbringer, whose sister Charlie was a setter for Mira Costa and completed her freshman season at the University of Wisconsin in December. Setter Andrew Chapin had 40 assists, UCLA commit Grayson Bradford (a senior transfer from Crespi) had 11 kills and Alex Heins added seven kills and four blocks for the Mustangs, who had last beaten Loyola in the SoCal Regional Division I finals on June 12, 2021. 'We wanted to win so bad,' Bradford said. 'We brought the energy and we have so much trust in each other. No matter who it is, we believe we can put any ball away.' Loyola defeated Mira Costa three times last spring — winning the schools' annual nonleague showdown, then sweeping the Mustangs in the Southern Section Division 1 finals and SoCal Regional finals — on its way to being crowned USA Today/AVCA national champion for a second straight season and the fourth time in school history. Snyder, who took the helm last season and guided Mira Costa to a 37-5 record, the Best of the West title and the Bay League championship, took a few moments to savor his first victory over Loyola but knows the rivals will likely meet again in the playoffs. The teams have met for the section title four times, Loyola winning in four sets in 2005 and 2010 and in three sets in 2024. Mira Costa prevailed in five sets in 2012. The Mustangs won the last of their eight section titles in 2021, sweeping Newport Harbor in the finals under previous coach Avery Drost. 'We haven't been healthy all week, but take nothing away from them,' said Cubs coach Mike Boehle, who has piloted his alma mater to seven section titles since taking over the program in 1999. 'It's been four years since they beat us and they played out of their minds.' Nate Garrett led the way with nine kills and Simon Capps added seven for Loyola (12-3). Blue-and-white clad supporters in the student section waved flags and chanted 'Let's go Cubs!' during introductions, but Mira Costa fans countered with 'We can't hear you!' in a timeout with their team holding a comfortable lead midway through the second set.

Sidney City Schools names its new superintendent

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Sidney City Schools have announced their new superintendent. According to reporting from the Sidney Daily News, Greg Snyder received a unanimous vote to the position at special board meeting Tuesday. He will take over as superintendent on Aug. 1. Until then, Bob Humble will continue on in the role before taking on an advisory position for the remainder of his contract. Snyder was selected from a pool of 10 candidates. That number was halved to five by a comprehensive process before interviews began. 'It's a big decision, there's no doubt,' Zack Bosslet told the Sidney Daily News. 'But we saw that there is excellent talent out there, and we were pleased to have such strong candidates interested in the job here in Sidney. Even more so, we are excited that a Yellow Jacket (Snyder) rose to the top of such an impressive group.' Snyder taught within the district for 12 years before transitioning to administration. He served as an assistant principal for two years before becoming principal, a title he held for three years before taking on his current role as director of Operations and Federal Programs. 'We are so lucky to have an amazing staff, families, and community support,' Snyder said to Sidney Daily News. 'I believe that with a common mission, we can fully tap into the potential that this district has. We are going to attack challenges, and we aren't going to shy away from getting better each day.'
