Who's the girls basketball Player of the Year? Time to vote on our poll to help us decide
It was another exciting season of girls basketball throughout the Rockford area, with stars stepping up at every corner. And now it's time for you to choose from some of them and select the girls high school basketball Player of the Year. You can vote on our poll below. We ask that you only vote once per day. The poll will stay open for two weeks, and the results will be announced sometime after March 28. You can choose from any of the 10 nominees. Here is a little bit more on each nominee: This 5-10 junior forward surpassed 1,000 points for her career late in the season, impressive for a team that won only five games this year after winning 12 last year. More Rockford-area sports: Stillman Valley's season and Taylor Davidson's career come screeching to a halt in supers Cahoon, who eclipsed 2,000 career points, averaged just under 25 points this season as a senior to go along with her six steals and four assists. She scored 46 points in a game this season, and Orangeville went 30-3. Davidson, a first-team IBCA All-Stater for the second year in a row, scored around 25 points per game long as a senior. And, she was a true leader on and off the court, helping her team to the supersectionals, where they lost to the eventual state runner-up, Peoria Notre Dame. This junior did it all for Hononegah: scoring, rebounding, getting her teammates involved, playing defense. She guarded the other team's top dog every night, and Hononegah made it to the sectional semis. Groharing is another junior who helped lead her team to the sectional semis, and she is an all-around weapon on both sides of the court. She surpassed 1,000 points this season, and she set a new single-season scoring record of 699 points for Byron. Thank you to every supporting coach and more importantly thank you to my teammates and the city of Freeport for supporting us!@LadyPretzBB @MacIrvinGirls — Paityn London ⭐️ (@Paityn_23) March 3, 2025 London adjusted well after transferring from Aquin to Freeport, and she wound up as the unanimous NIC-10 MVP this past season after scoring just under 25 points per game to go along with 9.3 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 6.1 steals. Morton was the second half of one of the toughest backcourts in the state, and when both she and Groharing were on, the Tigers were very tough to beat. Watch out for Morton and Byron next season. Another first-team All Stater this year, Parker became one of the quickest Rockford-area stars to ever get to 2,000 points, doing it near the end of her junior year. Pierson broke Amanda Levens's 28-year-old school scoring record, and she also broke Levens' single-game scoring record twice. Pierson, who averaged just over 24 points per game this season, will play both basketball and golf next year for NCAA Division II Minnesota-Crookston. Rager was the biggest cog to Pecatonica's success this year, and the 5-9 senior guard averaged 18.2 points per game while leading Pec to the IHSA Class 1A state title last weekend. Byron Lady Tigers hold off Stillman Valley in a BNC instant classic
BYRON, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Two of the best basketball teams in the state gave fans one of the best basketball games of the season Thursday night. Byron and Stillman Valley battled down to the final seconds before Byron held on for a 40-38 Stillman Valley's first loss of the season putting the Cardinals' record at 27-1 overall and their Big Northern Conference record at 7-1. Byron is now 26-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play. Byron also avenged a loss to Stillman Valley at Dixon's KSB Holiday Classic back on December Groharing led Byron with 18 points. Malia Morton scored 16 points, and she played some tremendous defense. Sophomore post player Dailene Wade led Stillman with 19 points.
