LAFC v Club América – Club World Cup playoff live

Update: Date: 2025-06-01T01:08:11.000Z Title: Content: LAFC has been in really good, but not outsstanding form of late. The team hasn't lost since 9 April's 3-1 result v Inter Miami in the Concacaf Champions Cup, but have only won three of their last eight games. The other five have all been high-scoring draws. In total, LAFC has managed to give up 12 goals in 8 games and not lose any of those games. Maybe not the best omen for a one-off knockout match, but impressive nonetheless! Update: Date: 2025-06-01T01:07:37.000Z Title: Content: Oddly enough, it all started in Costa Rica. That's the home country of the club Alajuelense, who filed the first petition to remove either Club León or Pachuca from the competition, despite both being fair-and-square winners the Concacaf Champions Cup. Alajuelense's reasoning: both teams are owned by Grupo Pachuca, which violates the Club World Cup's rules against multi-club ownership within the competition. The matter was raised all the way to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas), who ruled that León should be removed from the competition, while also dismissing Alajuelense's claims to replace them. In their place, Fifa decided on a playoff between LAFC and Club América, based on regional ranking and, in LAFC's case, being the team that León defeated in the 2023 Concacaf Champions Cup final to qualify for the tournament in the first place. It's complicated. More details here: Update: Date: 2025-06-01T01:07:37.000Z Title: Content: Club América is just coming off the disappointment of losing the Liga MX Liguilla final to Toluca, so they'll be well-practiced for a playoff situation.

LAFC, Club America to meet in Club World Cup play-in game on May 31

FIFA has confirmed that Los Angeles FC and Club America will compete in a one-off play-in game on May 31 to determine the final team at this summer's Club World Cup. The match will take place at LAFC's home, BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California with kick off at 7.30pm local time. The match will be streamed globally for free by DAZN, the tournament's broadcast rights holder. Advertisement The Athletic reported earlier this month that the game would take place, with the winner of the playoff taking the place of Club Leon in Group D for the newly-expanded tournament that begins on June 14. FIFA confirmed on March 21 that Leon had been removed from the competition after Grupo Pachuca 'failed to meet the criteria on multi-club ownership'. Grupo Pachuca also owns fellow Mexican side CF Pachuca, which is also taking part in the Club World Cup. Later in March, FIFA said it was considering hosting a playoff game between Club America and LAFC to replace Leon, with the former being the highest-ranked Concacaf team not already at the tournament and the latter having lost to Leon in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League final. Earlier this month, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected the appeals filed by Leon, Pachuca and from Costa Rican side Liga Deportiva Alajuelense relating to the Club World Cup, following FIFA's decision. CAS judged that Leon and Pachuca did not meet the competition's regulations concerning multi-club ownership, with both clubs majority-owned by Grupo Pachuca. That decision led to Leon's expulsion from the tournament, while a separate appeal by Alajuelense to fill that void was also rejected by CAS. Alajuelense's argument for a place at the tournament was that it is the highest-ranked Concacaf team outside of Mexico and the United States not already competing. FIFA's guidelines for the Club World Cup state that each nation should not have more than two representatives at the competition unless they are the winners of the confederation's annual tournament, such as the UEFA Champions League or the Concacaf Champions Cup — Mexico has Pachuca and Monterrey while the U.S. has Inter Miami and Seattle Sounders. Whoever replaces Leon in Group D at the Club World Cup will face English side Chelsea, ES Tunis of Tunisia and Brazilian club Flamengo. The Club World Cup begins on June 14, with the final to be held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 13.

Pachuca not considering signing James Rodriguez, Andres Guardado for Club World Cup

CF Pachuca president Armando Martinez says his club are not considering signing James Rodriguez or Andres Guardado for its Club World Cup campaign in June. Rodriguez, 33, joined Club Leon in January following the termination of his Rayo Vallecano contract, and was set to take part in the summer tournament alongside Guardado until it was announced in March that Leon were not eligible to play after failing to meet FIFA's multi-club ownership criteria. Advertisement Leon had qualified for the expanded Club World Cup after winning the Concacaf Champions Cup in 2023. Leon is owned by Grupo Pachuca, which also controls fellow Liga MX side Pachuca, which itself qualified for the competition after winning the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup. 'No, neither Guardado nor James are being considered to reinforce Pachuca for the World Cup,' Pachuca president Armando Martinez told ESPN, following reports that the pair could move to Leon's sister club. Martinez added Pachuca would look at 'possibilities' of signing players with 'other clubs in the league' but the team has yet to finalise names or positions they would like to strengthen. FIFA confirmed on May 6 that Los Angeles FC will play Club America in a playoff match on May 31 to determine who will take Leon's spot in the Club World Cup, after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected appeals made by the Mexican team. Speaking in March, Rodriguez called the decision a 'grave injustice' and argued that 'football would be stained' by Leon's absence. Rodriguez has played for Everton, Al Rayyan, Olympiacos, Sao Paulo and Rayo since leaving Real Madrid in 2020. He has remained an important player for Colombia, winning the Golden Ball at the 2024 Copa America. Guardado, meanwhile, has played 37 times for Leon after his contract was terminated with Real Betis in January 2024. He remains the most-capped Mexico men's player of all time with 182 international appearances. Pachuca have been drawn to face Rodriguez's former side Real Madrid in Group H at the Club World Cup, alongside Al Hilal and Red Bull Salzburg. The tournament begins on June 14 and the final is set for July 13. (Photo of James Rodriguez:)

Fifa to hold playoff for final Club World Cup berth after ruling

Fifa ousted Club Leon from the Club World Cup due to shared ownership with Pachuca under Grupo Pachuca, breaching tournament rules. (Fifa pic) ZURICH : Fifa on Tuesday confirmed it will hold a playoff between Los Angeles FC and Mexican giants America to decide the final berth at next month's Club World Cup following the expulsion of Club Leon. The decision to stage a playoff game was announced after the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed appeals from Leon, CF Pacucha and Costa Rica's Alajuelense. The move follows the decision to oust Leon from the Club World Cup – which is being held across the US from June 14 to July 13 – because the club is owned by Grupo Pachuca, which also controls Liga MX side Pachuca, who are also taking part in the tournament. LAFC advanced to the playoff on the basis of finishing as runners-up to Leon in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League. America were chosen as their replacements due to their status as the 'top-ranked team' in confederation rankings. The winner of the playoff will line up in Group D of the Club World Cup, where they will face Premier League side Chelsea, Brazil's Flamengo and Esperance Tunis of Tunisia. No date and venue for the LAFC-America playoff has been set, Fifa said.
