3rd Grüne Fête de la Musique to Take Place on June 19 & 21
Rana Atef
The Goethe-Institut Cairo and the French Institute of Egypt are joining forces to energize the Egyptian music scene with the third edition of La Grüne Fête de la Musique, taking place on June 19 at Antoniades Park in Alexandria and June 21 at the Greek Campus in Downtown Cairo.
This unique event, at the crossroads of French, German, and Egyptian cultures, celebrates music in all its diversity, promoting encounter, creativity, and sustainability—true to the 'green' DNA of this environmentally conscious festival.
This edition will spotlight an eclectic lineup of Egyptian, French, and German artists, blending contemporary music, electro, folk, jazz, and sound experimentation. Free concerts, open to all, will be held at iconic venues in both Cairo and Alexandria.
An Eco-Conscious Festival
This year's theme, "The Community as a Driver of Change", explores how every citizen can act daily in concrete ways to support more environmentally responsible practices. A series of workshops and talks in both Alexandria and Cairo will raise public awareness and showcase numerous Egyptian initiatives through dedicated stands.
La Grüne Fête de la Musique also places sustainability at the heart of its production: scenography using recycled materials, waste reduction, public education about carbon footprints, and promotion of eco-friendly mobility will all be emphasized.
In parallel with the festival, Egyptian arts and culture professionals, particularly festival organizers, are invited to take part in two days of discussions on June 20 and 21, aimed at developing common tools for implementing eco-friendly practices in their events.
A Diverse and Inclusive Lineup
In the lead-up to the event, a music residency will be held in Alexandria from June 15 to 19, featuring the participation of Yann Tambour (France), Ahmed Omar and Nour Ashour (Egypt), and Jamila & The Other Heroes (Germany). The residency will be organized by B'sarya for Art and facilitated by musician Ahmed Saleh.
The festival's musical program will also feature a wide range of artists and bands from Egypt, France, and Germany, including: Too Fuse, Stranded Horse & Boubacar Cissokho, Jamila & The Other Heroes, and Lella Fadda.
Institutional and Media Support
About the Organizers:
In 2023, the French and Goethe Institutes in Egypt launched Grüne Musique, a green celebration of music and environmental initiatives, amplifying the substantial efforts of Egyptian civil society in promoting environmental sustainability.
The Institut français d'Égypte (IFE) is part of the Embassy of France in Egypt. It promotes French culture, language, and expertise in Egypt and supports cooperation between Egypt and France in various fields: education, language, arts and culture, academia, science, and technology. The Institute also offers French language courses for youth, adults, and professionals, as well as Arabic language courses for French or third-country students.
The Goethe-Institut Cairo is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany, operating worldwide. It promotes cultural exchange, education, and social dialogue in an international context and supports the teaching and learning of the German language. In Cairo, the Goethe-Institut operates from three locations: Goethe-Institut Historical Building at Bustan (Downtown), and Palm Garden and White Villa (Dokki).
