Shame on those lobbying for Cabinet post, say PKR division leaders
PKR divisional leaders said elitist and patronage politics go against the party's culture. PETALING JAYA : Several PKR division chiefs have condemned allegations that certain party leaders are lobbying for ministerial positions, calling the claims shameful and contrary to the party's core reformist values. Gua Musang PKR chief Asharun Uji said he heard talk of such lobbying efforts, but no official information or solid evidence had been produced so far. 'I've only heard rumours. But as for how true it is, we leave that to the top leadership to resolve and investigate. 'There's no need for lobbying because the power to appoint ministers lies solely with the prime minister, who is also the PKR president,' he told FMT, urging fellow division leaders to reject such practices. Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported former PKR Sabah deputy communications chief Fekirie Gobet as saying that a party leader had been actively contacting division heads and collecting signatures to drum up support for a ministerial post. This comes following the resignations of economy minister Rafizi Ramli, and natural resources and environmental sustainability minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad after they lost in the recent PKR elections. Tanjong Karang PKR chief Yahya Mat Sahri said any attempt to lobby for Cabinet posts was embarrassing for the party and the issue should be left to the prime minister to resolve with dignity. Tapah PKR division chief Azam Afandi said signature campaigns or internal pressure tactics are not part of PKR's political culture. 'PKR was founded based on the principles of reform, hence we reject elitist and patronage politics. 'Even if such efforts are taking place, I believe they involve only a small group of individuals,' he said, adding that all Perak division chiefs would oppose any such movement.

Kelantan sun bear sightings spark fear among 3,000 Taman Agropolitan residents
GUA MUSANG, May 30 — Some 3,000 residents of Taman Agropolitan in Rantau Manis are living in fear after a sun bear was reportedly spotted roaming their residential area, causing damage to crops and livestock, as well as disrupting daily activities. Resident Siti Aminah Zakaria, 44, said she saw the mammal herself as it was attempting to get jackfruit from a tree just three metres in front of her house. 'I first saw the animal, which was about one metre tall, approaching the jackfruit tree the day before yesterday at around 6pm. My child was outside the house at the time and screamed in shock before running to get me. 'Then yesterday, it appeared in the parking area of my neighbour's house around 11am. The neighbour, who was hanging clothes at the time, was startled and ran inside,' she told reporters when met today. Another resident, Mohd Syawal Imran Abdul Rahim, 17, said he too saw the bear two days ago, digging into a termite mound near a resident's house. 'I quickly recorded the animal's actions and shared it with the neighbourhood's WhatsApp group to alert residents,' he said. Taman Agropolitan Residents' Safety and Development Committee (JKKT) Chairman Roslee Ibrahim, 51, said a bear was spotted roaming around Phase 1 of the residential area approximately three months ago. It was also observed in Kampung 10 two weeks ago. 'Apart from the financial losses, residents are worried about safety after seeing claw marks left by the bear on tree trunks. We are concerned the bear will become bolder and start entering people's homes,' he said. Nenggiri State Assemblyman Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani said a report has been lodged with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) regarding the presence of the wild animal. 'We hope preventive action, including the installation of traps, can be carried out immediately to ensure the safety of residents,' he said. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 — Wild elephants entered the compound of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Chalil in Rancangan Kemajuan Tanah (RKT) Kesedar Chalil, Gua Musang, yesterday, alarming teachers and nearby residents. Residents said it was the first time three elephants had entered the school compound, Harian Metro reported. Sa'rani Hassan, 64, vice president of the school's Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG), said more than 1,500 residents in the area now live in fear due to increasingly frequent elephant sightings. He said wild elephants had entered the village over ten times before, often damaging crops planted near homes. 'The wild elephants are believed to have entered the teachers' housing area at around 3am, damaging fences, coconut trees, oil palms and banana trees nearby. 'At 6.30am yesterday, the elephants were still in the school compound and were eating plants in the surrounding area,' he said. Suhaimi Che Hamid, 54, head of Kesedar Chalil settlers' neighbourhood watch, said elephant incidents have become more frequent in the past month, raising safety concerns among villagers. Kelantan Perhilitan director Mohamad Hafid Rohani confirmed that the department has received complaints from residents and is monitoring the situation.
