Guelph Black Heritage Society celebrates Juneteenth
The Guelph Black Heritage Society (GBHS) will be hosting an event this weekend to commemorate a significant day in history — Juneteenth.
The event will take place Saturday at the Heritage Hall. Attendees can enjoy live music, kids crafts and the premiere of an exhibit dedicated to displaying the history of Black identities, resistance and culture.
Juneteenth is a day that is typically recognized on June 19. It commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States in 1865.
While Juneteenth is Emancipation Day for the United States, it's still celebrated by some Black Canadians.
'Juneteenth marks a significant day in Black history and a day of remembrance, it is also an opportunity to honour and celebrate Black history, heritage and culture,' stated GBHS in a release.
Admission for the event is free and any donations made will go toward the Heritage Hall Heart & Soul Campaign, which aims to expand and update resources and programming at GBHS.
