Shubman Gill's Captaincy Receives Brutal Review After IPL 2025 Exit: "You Can't Drop..."

After Gujarat Titans' (GT) bowed out of IPL 2025 with a 20-run defeat to Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Eliminator, former India batter Robin Uthappa said the Shubman Gill-led side cannot expect to win the championship if they suffer catching lapses and suffer due to flaws in strategy. In New Chandigarh on Friday evening, GT dropped three important catches – two of which were of Rohit Sharma, who went on to make a dashing 50-ball 81. Suryakumar Yadav was also given a reprieve in the 12th over, as MI made 228/5. GT also got their middle overs enforcer Prasidh Krishna to bowl with the new ball, a tactic which backfired as Rohit and Jonny Bairstow came out all guns blazing in the powerplay. "GT's strategy was more reactive than proactive. Using Prasidh in the powerplay – despite his success in middle overs – was a misstep.' 'His first over was expensive, and they failed to course-correct. The 26-run and 22-run overs proved costly. On top of that, their fielding let them down. You can't drop that many catches and expect to win a championship," said Uthappa on JioHotstar. Uthappa, who previously won IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, reflected on how Rohit made a calculated shift in his batting approach after being given two reprieves. "After the early drop, Rohit flirted with danger briefly but quickly recognised the need to take control. He shifted gears, played responsibly, found the gaps, and built key partnerships. His composure stood out. When players like Rohit, Dhoni, or Kohli are at the crease, the pressure is on everyone else. Sai Sudharsan is starting to reach that level too." With MI set to meet Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, Uthappa stated he expects a fierce battle between the two teams. The winner of Qualifier 2 will meet Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the title clash in Ahmedabad on June 3. "Punjab are hurting and will come out firing. Mumbai, riding high on momentum, will bring intensity as well. It's set to be a blockbuster, one for the ages," he concluded. Listen to the latest songs, only on

'I mean playing for the country is obviously a dream for everybody, so I would love to do that, but I am not thinking on those lines because if you see about the season, I have a lot of things to improve as a T20 batter.'He added, 'There are so many facets of the game or so many sectors I should improve when I play T20 again, so I am focusing more on that. Of course, when I get an opportunity, I will give my best for the country.'Sudharsan's personal success this IPL may not have been enough to carry Gujarat Titans all the way, but it has given Indian cricket a new Test hopeful—possibly the one who will walk out with Gill in the English summer, leading a team that's ready for a new chapter.

Sai Sudharsan In Heated Chat With Umpire Over DRS Call. This Happens Next

Despite having a memorable run, Gujarat Titans' dream of lifting the IPL 2025 trophy shattered on Friday after they lost to Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator match. Playing in Mullanpur, MI opted to bat first and posted a whopping total of 228/5 in 20 overs. The biggest hero of their innings was opener Rohit Sharma, who scored 81 off 50 balls. Later, GT put up a strong fight but fell short by 20 runs and were knocked out from the trophy race. During this high-scoring run-chase, a controversial moment took place when GT batter Sai Sudharsan was not pleased with the umpire's decision. In the 13th over of GT's chase, Sudharsan tried to play a scoop shot off Trent Boult. However, Sudharsan missed the ball, which went down the leg and looked like a wide. The on-field umpire signalled it to be fair delivery, stating that Sudharsan moved from his spot to the scoop shot, otherwise the ball would have hit his pads. Not happy with the call, the GT opener went from the DRS review, which again gave the decision in the favour of MI. Seeing this, Sudharsan walked towards the on-field umpire and was seen arguing over the matter. However, the moment quickly settled down and game continued. Clear wide ball not given and Sai Sudharshan is not happy with umpire. — Ahmed Says (@AhmedGT_) May 30, 2025 After the match, GT skipper Shubman Gill was visibly upset with his team's overall performance as while fielding, the players dropped three catches. "Brilliant game of cricket, we were right in it. Last three-four overs didn't go our way but still a good game. Definitely not easy when we drop 3 sitters. Wasn't easy for the bowlers to control and doesn't help when you drop 3 catches," said Gill during the post-match presentation. "Message was simple (for Sai and Washington). Just play the game you want to play and the goal was the same for both of them to make us win. Because of the dew, the wicket did become little easier for us. Definitely lot of positives for us. Last 2-3 games didn't go our way but credit to all the players, especially Sai - he was terrific for us this season. 210 would've been par for us on this pitch," he added. MI will now be taking on Punjab Kings in the Qualifier 2 match on Sunday in Ahmedabad. The winner of this match will be facing Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final on June 3.

Shubman Gill-Sai Sudharsan Miss This MASSIVE IPL Record By 27 Runs After Loss In IPL 2025 Eliminator

Gujarat Titans' 2025 IPL campaign came to a heartbreaking end after a 20-run defeat against Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator, but it was also the end of a near-historic run for their top-order duo, Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill. The two stylish batters amassed an incredible 912 runs together this season, forming one of the most dominant partnerships in IPL history. Their combined effort places them third on the all-time list for most partnership runs in a single IPL season, just 27 runs shy of equaling the joint-record of 939 runs, held by Virat Kohli with AB de Villiers (2016) and Faf du Plessis (2023). The Gill–Sudharsan pairing showed remarkable consistency and composure, often laying solid foundations for Gujarat's innings throughout the tournament. 939 - Virat Kohli/Du Plessis (2023) 939 - Virat Kohli/ABD (2016) 912 - Gill/Sudharsan (2025) 849 - Ruturaj/Conway (2023) 791 - Warner/Bairstow (2019) In the Eliminator, however, things didn't go as planned. Skipper Shubman Gill was dismissed for just 1 run in the first over, his first single-digit score in an IPL knockout, leaving Sudharsan to shoulder the responsibility. The left-hander rose to the occasion with a classy 80 off 49 balls, but his efforts weren't enough to carry the Titans past MI's total. Despite the loss, Sudharsan made history by becoming the youngest batter to score over 700 runs in a single IPL season, surpassing Gill's record from the previous year. With a combined total of runs that almost rewrote the record books, Gill and Sudharsan's partnership remains one of the defining stories of IPL 2025, a mix of brilliance, balance, and what-could-have-been. For Gujarat Titans and Indian cricket, this pairing promises an exciting future, even as they narrowly missed carving their names into the record books this time.

Shubman Gill's captaincy slammed after GT's flop show against Mumbai Indians: ‘Can't expect to win a championship…'

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has criticised the Gujarat Titans' strategy during Friday's match against the Mumbai Indians. Notably, GT had secured a place in the IPL 2025 Playoffs by finishing third in the IPL Points Table, but were eliminated from the tournament on 30 May after losing by 20 runs to MI in the Eliminator clash. After the match, Uthappa criticised GT's strategy, calling it 'reactive' rather than 'proactive', and noted that captain Shubman Gill used Prasidh Krishna in the powerplay, despite the bowler's past success in the middle overs. Uthappa also mentioned the sloppy fielding by the GT players, which only made matters worse for their team. Speaking to JioHotstar after the match, Uthappa said, 'GT's strategy was more reactive than proactive. Using Prasidh in the powerplay – despite his success in middle overs – was a misstep. His first over was expensive, and they failed to course-correct,' 'The 26-run and 22-run overs proved costly. On top of that, their fielding let them down. You can't drop that many catches and expect to win a championship,' the former cricketer added. Notably, GT players had a poor time on the field, allowing the Mumbai Indians batters several chances, which they seized with both hands to post a total of 228 runs in 20 overs. In reply, GT lost Shubman Gill's wicket early on, but Sai Sudharsan led a comeback, first with Kusal Mendis (20 off 10 balls) and then with Washington Sundar (48 off 24 balls), to bring GT back into the match.
