Jamie Gullan vows to run himself into the ground for St Johnstone

New St Johnstone forward, Jamie Gullan, has vowed to run himself 'into the ground' for the Perth club. The 25-year-old built up a reputation as one of the hardest-working and most versatile attackers in the Championship with Raith Rovers. And, after joining Jack Baird and Morgan Boyes in agreeing a two-year deal with Saints, he's hoping McDiarmid Park boss, Simo Valakari, will take his performances to an even higher level. 'I am over the moon to be here,' said Gullan. 'As soon as the club were in touch and I had chats with the gaffer, I just wanted to get things done as quickly as possible. 'I am so excited to get back for pre-season and to meet all the players now. 'It is an exciting time to be at the club and a fresh challenge for me. 'I have spoken to the gaffer two or three times now. Every time I speak to him, I get a good feeling. 'We have discussed how I will fit in. 'I am looking forward to working under him. Hopefully he can improve me as a player and hopefully I can help improve the squad too.' Gullan added: 'I am an attacking player who will leave everything out on the pitch. 'I'll run myself into the ground every game. I want to give everything for this club. 'I know a lot about St Johnstone already as my brother-in-law is a massive supporter. 'For the past few years I have been given a weekly report on how the club is doing and he always tells me how amazing the fans are. 'I can't wait to meet and play in front of everyone at McDiarmid Park when the season gets underway.' Gullan had no fewer than five spells with Raith, three of them loans. The most recent of them was his best and Stark's Park boss, Barry Robson, had hoped to persuade him to stay. Gullan, who was in the Hearts and Hibs academies as a youth, is renowned for his free-kick goals. A hard-worker off the ball, the two-footed attacker is equally at home playing through the middle or coming in off the left. Saints have hit the ground running in the transfer market since releasing 16 players, with plenty of recruitment work still to be done.

Jamie Gullan on Barry Robson tenure and Raith Rovers future

For Jamie Gullan, and a handful of others in the Raith Rovers squad, the anguish of missing out on the play-offs was aggravated by uncertainty over the future. It was clear the torture of coming so close to landing fourth place – just one goal for Livingston would have done it – was not the only thing that had some players close to tears at Hampden. The dust of the impressive 5-1 hammering of Queen's Park and an unfortunate end to the campaign will not take long to settle before thoughts turn to next season. Some notable servants are set to leave Stark's Park to make room for manager Barry Robson to put more of his own stamp on the squad he inherited in late December. Gullan, with four goals in the 18 appearances of his latest stint at the club, admits he is unsure whether the short-term deal he agreed in January will be extended. However, the former Hibernian forward is convinced the late bid to reach the play-offs hints at brighter things ahead for Raith. 'We've been on an unbelievable run to even get to the position where we were fighting for it on the last day,' Gullan told Courier Sport. 'I couldn't be prouder of everyone at the club, because we've really given everything the last four or five months since the gaffer's been in. 'Ten games unbeaten in the Championship is very, very good. It doesn't happen often. 'And it just shows what we've been doing is working. 'Yes, we're just gutted right now. But I think once everything settles down we'll look back and be proud of the run we went on. 'To know we potentially had to win by four goals and going and doing it, it's incredible. 'So, yes, we did our bit and it just wasn't to be.' Gullan admitted there would be regret in the Raith ranks, lamenting this game or that, or this moment or that. In the end just two points separated them from Partick in fourth. But the 25-year-old, who was full of praise for the 'unbelievable' Rovers fans, almost 1,500 of whome descended on the national stadium, is convinced they can learn from this season and go at least one better in 12 months' time. 'The manager just kind of told us to remember the feeling and how hard it is to take,' added Gullan. 'But he spoke of trying to get momentum into next season after showing what we can do in this quarter when we've not lost. 'So, if we take that into next season, then who knows what this club can do? We should be in the play-offs. 'And I think this club should be fighting at the top end of the table. We've proved that we can do that the last few months. 'So, that's the message.' And as for the possibility of a contract extension? 'We were waiting until the end of the season, so we'll just see what happens,' he added. 'The whole club was just focusing on the play-offs, to be honest.'

Labor alter how-to-vote card after preferencing antisemitic Legalise Cannabis Canning candidate

Labor has changed their how-to-vote card in the WA seat of Canning after they preferenced a now-dumped Legalise Cannabis candidate who made antisemitic comments online third. The minor party's Paul Gullan had shared a string of posts, including one which accused Israel of 'playing the victim' in the Hamas-led October 7 terror attack. He also shared a cartoon to Facebook of Hitler passing a swastika-branded, bloodied baton to Benjamin Netanyahu in a race, with a caption reiterating views that 'Hitler was doing the world a favour by exterminating the Jews.' While stating he didn't 'subscribe to these beliefs' online, Mr Gullan added that Jewish people need to 'execute their leaders', 'if Jews want to maintain their rights as victims of a holocaust.' Mr Gullan was disendorsed on Tuesday after questions from The West Australian, with a party spokesman saying the content did not align with their values. While Labor's Canning candidate Jarrad Goold declined to comment, the party's WA State secretary Ellie Whiteaker told The West Australian the party had reviewed their preferences. 'Immediately upon being made aware of comments from Mr Gullan, WA Labor changed our how to vote cards in Canning,' she said. Incumbent Liberal MP Andrew Hastie is now third on Labor's list, parallel with where Mr Hastie had initially placed Mr Goold. In his online commentary, Mr Gullan had also stated several times he doesn't smoke weed, despite running to represent a party whose base policy is to decriminalise its use. 'I joined the Legalise Cannabis WA Party tonight, even though I do not like Marijuana,' he posted on February 1. Three weeks later he again said: 'I drink and don't smoke weed, as a personal preference.'
