Three arrested in Raipur Rani firing case

The district police crime branch has apprehended three key accused in connection with an attack by alleged mining mafia on a mining officer and his team. The incident, involving firing and assault, took place at a screening plant zone near Tangri Bridge in Raipur Rani on Tuesday. Police and mining department personnel were on duty at a checkpoint in Raipur Rani to curb illegal mining when, around 3 am on May 20, a group of young men approached the team on foot. One of them fired a pistol, with the bullet narrowly missing an official's head. Three individuals then physically assaulted the staff, severely injuring Praveen Yadav, before fleeing while issuing death threats. DCP (crime) Amit Dahiya informed that the three arrested accused are Ankit from village Sultanpur, Gurdeep alias Pehlwan, from village Rampur, Raipur Rani and Rajiv Kumar from Joli village, Panchkula. All three have criminal histories. Accused Ankit Rana has a total of six serious cases registered against him, including attempted murder and violations of Arms Act. Gurdeep has two extortion cases, and Rajiv has one extortion case registered against him. A case was registered against them under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act on Tuesday. The trio was presented before the local court on Thursday and remanded for three days to aid in the recovery of the weapon and to identify others who were involved.

India's first upcoming AI film gets global attention at Cannes

Clips from Maharaja in Denims, poised to be India's first full-length AI-generated feature film, have emerged as a striking proof of concept for the future of cinema at the ongoing Festival de Cannes. Based on Chandigarh-based author Khushwant Singh's novel of the same name, the movie has been generating buzz after Tony DeRosa-Grund, creator of The Conjuring universe, signed a five-movie slate with the tech start-up producing the film and announced the collaboration at the festival. The novel narrates the story of a privileged Chandigarh teenager who believes he is the reincarnation of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and a 1984 anti-Sikh riot victim. With its layered timelines and historical scale, the film would traditionally require a massive budget — yet it is now being produced through AI at one-tenth the cost. This pioneering foray into Hollywood places India at the forefront of storytelling through technological innovation. Earlier this May, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India's first World Audio Visual Entertainment Summit in Mumbai, aimed at positioning India as a leading global player in entertainment technology. Maharaja in Denims is being produced by Intelliflicks Studio, a Chandigarh-based company currently in the production stage of the film, which is expected to release in August-September. The studio was founded in 2023 following a chance conversation between author Khushwant Singh and Gurdeep Singh Pall, the former vice-president of incubations at Microsoft. 'Gurdeep wanted to test the viability of producing a full feature film using AI tools based on my novel, and that's how we set up Intelliflicks,' said Khushwant, who is also co-founder of the studio along with Gurdeep. 'AI is no longer a conceptual future—it's a present force that enables films to be made that studios once deemed impossible due to cost or scale,' Gurdeep said. 'I'm thrilled to see this journey unfold,' said DeRosa-Grund. 'The concept of proof laid out through the clips of Maharaja in Denims has passed the litmus test in filmmaking. However, given the role of technology, our approach will not be to replace artists through AI — but to unleash them. This new medium isn't a prediction of what's coming. It's a production of what's now.'

Ludhiana: Cross FIRs registered after advocates, district court complex employees clash

Following the clash between advocates and court employees at the District Court Complex on Monday, the Division Number 5 police have registered cross FIRs against both groups involved late Tuesday night. Based on a complaint filed by advocate Narinder Singh, the police have booked court employees Gurdeep, Navdeep, Akash, Maan Singh, Ravi Kumar, Harwinder Singh alias Tinku, along with at least five unidentified individuals. They have been booked under Sections 127(2) (wrongful confinement), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), and 299 (deliberate act intended to outrage religious feelings) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Meanwhile, in a counter complaint, Sukhwinder Singh, an assistant record keeper at the court complex, accused a group of advocates, including Narinder Singh, Rohit Kumar, Rohit Thapar, Amandeep Singh, Harjinder Singh, Mohammad Intzaar, Varun Gupta, Sunny Sharma, Shubham Agarwal, Amit Kumar, and several unidentified accomplices of assault and property damage. They have been booked under Sections 115(2), 126(2), 132 (assault on public servant), 221 (obstructing public functions), 351(2)(3), 324(4) (causing damage exceeding ₹20,000), 191 (rioting) of BNS, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. Advocate Narinder Singh claimed the conflict began when his colleague Rohit lost his wallet. Gurdeep, a court employee, reportedly informed Rohit that he had found it. When Rohit retrieved the wallet, he alleged that ₹8,000 in cash was missing. Upon questioning Gurdeep, an argument ensued, which escalated into a physical altercation. Narinder further alleged that the court staff, including Gurdeep, confined and assaulted them and even tossed his turban—an act that hurt religious sentiments. In contrast, Sukhwinder Singh stated that it was the advocates who first abused and attacked Gurdeep. He said that the employees tried to defuse the situation but were assaulted instead. Fearing further violence, they locked themselves in a room, but the advocates allegedly shattered a glass window using a brick and damaged government property. Sukhwinder also emphasised that the incident occurred during working hours, accusing the lawyers of obstructing public servants from performing their duties. ASI Subhash Chand, who is investigating the case, stated that further investigation is underway to determine the sequence of events and assign accountability.
