Houthis Threaten More Missile Strikes On Ben Gurion Airport, Declares Aerial Blockade On Israel

Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels have issued a renewed and direct threat to Israel, vowing repeated missile strikes on its airports. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree specifically named Ben Gurion Airport (Lod) as their primary target, following a previous strike that left six wounded. The group also warned international airlines to cancel flights to Israel and take the threat seriously. This escalatory message came just hours after Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu posted a warning to the Houthis, saying 'there will be bangs' in response to the missile strike on Sunday. The Houthis declared their intent to impose a full aerial blockade on Israel and continue targeting Israeli airspace.#houthis #yemen #israel #bengurion #netanyahu #houthimissiles #gazastrip #hamas Read More

Photo: Reuters A missile fired by Yemen's Houthi rebels towards Israel on Sunday landed near Ben Gurion Airport, the country's main international airport, sending a plume of smoke into the air and causing panic among passengers in the terminal building. Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis, who claimed responsibility for the missile strike, have recently intensified missile launches at Israel, saying they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. A senior Israeli police commander, Yair Hetzroni, showed reporters a crater caused by the impact of the missile, which airport authorities said had landed beside a road near a Terminal 3 parking lot. "You can see the scene right behind us here, a hole that opened up with a diameter of tens of metres and also tens of metres deep," Hetzroni said, adding that there was no significant damage. In a statement after the strike, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said: "Whoever harms us will be harmed sevenfold." Israel's Channel 12 News said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would meet security ministers and defence officials on Sunday to discuss a response. Most missile launches from Yemen have been intercepted by Israel's missile defence systems, apart from a strike that hit Tel Aviv last year. The military said it was investigating what happened with Sunday's launch, which caused sirens to be activated across central Israel, including nearby in the major city of Tel Aviv. The Israeli ambulance service said eight people were being taken to hospital, including a man in a mild to moderate condition with injuries to his limbs and two women in a mild condition with head injuries. Claiming responsibility for the strike, the Houthis' military spokesperson Yahya Saree said Israel's main airport was "no longer safe for air travel". A spokesperson for the Israel Airports Authority said takeoffs and landings had resumed and operations at Ben Gurion had returned to normal, after reports of air traffic being halted and access routes to the airport being blocked. However, flight operations were disrupted due to the missile, according to Ben Gurion's live air traffic site. Some flights, including by Air India, TUS Airways and Lufthansa Group, were cancelled. Others, including to US airports Newark and JFK, were delayed by about 90 minutes. (Reuters)

Watch: 25-Meter-Deep Crater At Israel's Biggest Airport After Houthi Missile Strike

Tel Aviv: A ballistic missile fired by Yemen's Houthi rebels towards Israel on Sunday landed just 75 meters from Terminal 3 of Ben Gurion Airport outside Tel Aviv-- the country's biggest international airport. The missile reportedly bypassed four layers of air defence and hit a grove adjacent to an access road within the airport's perimeter--one of the country's most sensitive zones-- creating a 25-meter deep crater. Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said their several attempts to intercept the missile failed before it landed near the airport, sending a plume of smoke into the air. However, a direct hit on terminal infrastructure was averted, yet it caused panic among passengers in the terminal building. At least eight people were injured in the attack, Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel's national emergency service, said. The military released a video of the aftermath of the strike showing officers standing at the edge of a crater in an orchard, with the airport's control tower visible in the distance. #BREAKING Yemeni launched missiles toward Ben Gurion Airport just hours earlier. CCTV footage captures the moment a Houthi ballistic missile struck near the airport in Tel Aviv, forming a massive crater after Israeli air defenses failed to intercept it. — The World War (@TheWorldWar12) May 4, 2025 Yair Hezroni, the police's central district chief, can be heard saying in the video that "you can see the area just behind us: a crater was formed here, several dozen metres (yards) wide and several dozen metres deep". Meanwhile, authorities have also launched a full-scale investigation into the breach of Israel's air defence and the missile's impact site near one of the country's most sensitive zones. The Houthi missile hit just 75 meters from Terminal 3 at Ben Gurion Airport, narrowly avoiding a direct strike that could have triggered a full-scale war. This needs a powerful response. — Open Source Intel (@Osint613) May 4, 2025 Israel has an elaborate system of air defences to counter missiles and drones. Known as Iron Dome, the system is designed to intercept short-range rockets, as well as shells and mortars, at ranges of between 4km and 70km from the missile launcher. Following the missile strike, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a stark warning: "Whoever harms us, we will strike them sevenfold." So far, Israel has refrained from launching retaliatory strikes on Yemen despite a series of Houthi attacks, as the United States leads a broader military campaign against the Iran-backed group. Houthi leaders hailed the attack as a demonstration of their long-range strike capability. Senior Houthi official Mohammed al-Bukhaiti told Al-Araby TV that his group has "no red lines" in its confrontation with Israel and emphasised their ability to hit sensitive Israeli targets, The Times of Israel reported. Additionally, Houthi media chief Nasser al-Din Omar issued a warning to international airlines against flying to or from Israel, claiming such operations jeopardised aircraft safety.

Missile fired by Yemen's Houthis lands near Israel's main airport

BEN GURION AIRPORT, Israel - A missile fired by Yemen's Houthi rebels towards Israel on May 4 landed near Ben Gurion Airport, the country's main international airport, sending a plume of smoke into the air and causing panic among passengers in the terminal building. Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis, who claimed responsibility for the missile strike, have recently intensified missile launches at Israel, saying they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. A senior Israeli police commander Yair Hetzroni showed reporters a crater caused by the impact of the missile, which airport authorities said had landed beside a road near a Terminal 3 parking lot. 'You can see the scene right behind us here, a hole that opened up with a diametre of tens of metres and also tens of metres deep,' he said, adding that there was no significant damage. In a statement after the strike, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said: 'Whoever harms us will be harmed sevenfold.' Sirens were activated across central Israel in the minutes before it fell, including nearby in the major city of Tel Aviv. A Reuters reporter at the airport, which is located between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, heard sirens and saw passengers reacting by running towards safe rooms. Several people at the airport posted videos filmed on smartphones that showed a plume of black smoke clearly visible nearby, behind parked aircraft and airport buildings. Reuters has not verified the videos. The Israeli ambulance service said eight people were being taken to hospital, including a man in a mild to moderate condition with injuries to his limbs and two women in a mild condition with head injuries. A Reuters reporter boarded a flight to Dubai that was running on time. US strikes on Houthis Claiming responsibility for the strike, the Houthis' military spokesperson Yahya Saree reiterated a warning to airlines that the Israeli airport was 'no longer safe for air travel'. The Houthi missile strike comes after US President Donald Trump in March ordered large-scale strikes against the rebels to reduce their capabilities and deter them from targeting commercial shipping in the Red Sea. The Houthis, who control swathes of Yemen, began targeting Israel and Red Sea shipping in late 2023, during the early days of the war between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip. The war was triggered by Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel on Oct 7, 2023, in which 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage. Israel's offensive on Gaza has killed more than 50,000 Palestinians and destroyed much of the coastal enclave. The Houthis pledged to expand their range of targets in Israel in retaliation for a renewed Israeli offensive in Gaza launched in mid-March, breaking a two-month-old ceasefire. The US strikes on the rebel group, which have killed hundreds of people in Yemen, have been the biggest US military operation in the Middle East since Mr Trump took office in January.
