The 15th Olympian Prithipal Singh Hockey Festival, being organised by Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Charitable Trust, Jarkhar village, witnessed an enthralling third round of league matches on Monday. In the senior category, defending champions Dr Kuldeep Singh Club Moga secured their place in the semifinals, while Gill Club Ghawaddi and Amargarh Centre advanced to the quarterfinals. In the junior category, Nankana Sahib School, Rampur Channa, entered the semifinals, while Ek Noor Academy, Tehing and Hoshiarpur Hockey Centre qualified for the quarterfinals. The matches are being played on the blue astroturf under floodlights at Jarkhar Sports Stadium. In the first match of the day, defending champions Dr Kuldeep Singh Club Moga defeated Young Club Utala with a score of 10–5. International-level hockey player Gurmukh Singh of the winning team was declared the 'dabur hero of the match'. In the second match, Gill Club Ghawaddi edged past Amargarh Centre with a close 7–6 victory after a tough contest, keeping their hopes alive. Arjan Pandit of Gill Club Ghawaddi was named 'dabur hero of the match'. In the junior category, Ek Noor Academy defeated Hoshiarpur 1–0, with Navpreet Singh being named 'hero of the match'. In another junior match, Nankana Sahib School, Rampur Chhanna, defeated Ghavaddi School 3–0. Rampur's Karanpreet Singh was declared 'dabur hero of the match'. Former national hockey player and prominent businessman Jagjit Singh Dakha from Kolkata, along with international weightlifter Hardeep Singh Saini, were the chief guests and interacted with various teams. Chief organiser Jagrup Singh Jarkhar extended a warm welcome to all the guests. Prominent figures including Kuldeep Singh Ghawaddi, Gursatinder Singh Pargat, Paramjit Singh Pamma Garewal, Shingara Singh Jarkhar, Ajitpal Singh Narangwal, Gurvinder Singh Kila Raipur, Tajinder Singh Laddi Sudhar, Ashwani Kumar, Karan Sidhu, and Baba Rulda Singh Saia Kala were also present. The semifinal matches of the Olympian Prithipal Singh Hockey Festival will be held on June 7, followed by the final on June 8.

LUDHIANA: Khanna police arrested eleven accused, including a police head constable and three PSPCL (Punjab State Power Corporation Limited) employees, after recovering 230 grams of heroin and Rs 65,000 in drug money from them. An informer reported that in a vacant plot in City Home Colony, Khanna, some youths were sitting on a motorcycle Splendor, a car Etios, and a vehicle Scorpio. These individuals were addicted to drugs and supplying them. Acting on this tip-off, the police immediately raided the spot and arrested the accused. She added that when the accused were searched in accordance with the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code, a transparent envelope was recovered from the pocket of the pants worn by Amarjit Singh, from which 30 grams of heroin was recovered, along with drug money of Rs 20,000 from the dashboard of the vehicle. Police officials said that the accused were arrested, and a case was registered at Khanna City Two Police Station. Further investigation of the case was carried out, and during the in-depth interrogation of accused Amarjit Singh, it was revealed that Gurmukh Singh of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Colony, Khanna (SSA rank official in PSPCL), and Head Constable Arvinder Singh of Passi Nagar on Pakhowal Road of Ludhiana procured the drug and supplied it to two different places. She added that on 21 May, as per the interrogation and on the statement of Gurmukh Singh, Raj Mahinder Singh was named as an accused in the case. He was arrested in Amritsar on the evidence of Gurmukh Singh, and 100 grams of heroin and Rs 45,000 in drug money were recovered. A senior police officer said that while investigating the case thoroughly, it also came to light that Head Constable Arvinder Singh, who is posted at Counter-Intelligence Ludhiana, and Sukhdev Singh of Dehiru, who is a watchman in the Electricity Board, are involved in . They were named as accused in the case and arrested. Police officials said that while further investigating the case, it came to light that Head Constable Arvinder Singh often sold drugs at the Doctor Mobile Repair Shop of Amritpal Singh in Bhola Colony, Manakwal, on Dhandra Road of Ludhiana, where he has been arrested. They added that in-depth interrogation of the accused is underway, and more important revelations are expected in the case.

The Amritsar commissionerate police have busted two separate drug smuggling networks, arresting three accused and seizing 1.01kg of heroin, ₹45.37 lakh in drug money and a cash counting machine, Punjab director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Saturday. The crackdown is part of the ongoing efforts by Punjab Police to combat drug menace in the region under the state-wide anti-drug campaign Yudh Nashian Virudh. The arrested persons have been identified as Rahul Singh alias Kalu, 20, of Thathi Sohal in Tarn Taran, Gurmukh Singh, 21, of village Sudhar Rajputan and Varinderpal Singh, 32, of village Akalgarh Dhaphian, both loacted in Amritsar district. DGP Yadav said that two separate FIRs have been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Gate Hakima police station and Verka police station, adding that investigations are on to trace the entire smuggling network and its local and international connections. Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, commissioner of police (CP), Amritsar, said CIA-2 police teams apprehended Rahul Singh from a rented house in Anand Vihar and recovered 510 grams of heroin, ₹30.18 lakh in cash and a currency counting machine. 'Preliminary probe suggests that Rahul was in contact with a Germany-based smuggler, identified as Tony, and was distributing heroin locally after receiving cross-border consignments. An FIR (no 117 dated 16-05-2025) has been lodged under Sections 21-C and 25 of the NDPS Act at Gate Hakima Police Station. Tony originally hails from Punjab,' Bhullar added. In a separate operation, teams from Verka police station arrested Gurmukh Singh and Varinderpal Singh, recovering 500 grams of heroin, ₹15.19 lakh in cash and a toy drone fitted with a camera, the commissioner said. 'A locker concealed in a bed box at a residence in village Akalgarh has been discovered,it was used for hiding drug money. The drone was allegedly being used for practice purposes by the accused. An FIR (no 40 dated 14-05-2025) has been filed under Sections 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act at Verka police station,' Bhullar added.
