5-member panel to review progress of SAD reorganisation
Amritsar: Having nearly completed the enrolment process, the five-member committee constituted by the Sikh high priests and tasked with the reorganisation of the (SAD) is set to meet on June 10 to review the progress of the ongoing membership drive and discuss future steps for the party's restructuring. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "We are convening in Chandigarh tomorrow and have instructed all our leaders to bring the enrolment slips, so that we can review the progress of the enrollment process," Gurpartap Singh Wadala, a member of the committee, said on Monday. The enrollment process is nearly complete, but we will keep the door open, he said. On Dec 2, 2024, the Sikh high priests originally constituted a seven-member committee under the chairmanship of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami. The other members of the committee comprised Kripal Singh Badungar, Iqbal Singh Jhunda, Gurpartap Singh Wadala, Manpreet Singh Ayalee, Santa Singh Umaidpuri, and Bibi Satwant Kaur. The Sikh clergy specifically mandated the committee to initiate the enrollment process for the reorganisation of the SAD. However, subsequently, Dhami and Kripal Singh Badungar, former SGPC chief, resigned and distanced themselves from the committee, reducing it to a five-member panel. Claiming that theirs is the original SAD which they are reorganising in the light of the Dec 2 hukamnama (edict), Wadala said he was hopeful that by July, they would appoint delegates, announce their organisational structure, and also the party president. However, he expressed reservations about the party's name due to legal and technical challenges. He indicated that a suffix might need to be appended to the SAD name and downplayed the significance of retaining 'takri' (weighing balance) as the party symbol. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Times have changed. People today are less influenced by party symbols than in the past; they now focus more on the leaders' identities, the party's actions, and its core values. Our Akali Dal will not be dominated by any particular faction in Punjab but will strive to be inclusive and widely accepted. These matters will be addressed in tomorrow's meeting," said Wadala. NRIs who helped AAP win in Punjab now backing us: Rebel Akalis
Rebel Akali leaders CHANDIGARH: Dissident leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Monday claimed that their membership enrolment drive was receiving support from NRIs who had ensured AAP's victory in the 2022 assembly elections of Punjab. The dissident leaders have been claiming that their five member panel is carrying out the membership drive on the 'directions of Akal Takht '. However, Akal Takht had formed a seven-member panel and two of the leaders had left it to side with SAD president Sukhbir Badal 's camp. SAD dissident Gurpartap Singh Wadala , speaking at a press conference during which an online portal was launch to enrol NRIs as members, there was a lot of enthusiasm for their membership drive in the gurudwaras in the United Kingdom and Canada. 'They see a ray of hope in the coming days. The new leadership of the Panth (Sikh community) will emerge after this membership drive. These are the people who made a significant contribution to bringing the broom (the poll symbol of AAP) to power. They are now strongly backing the enrolment drive, which is being carried out on the directions of Akal Takht. They stand firmly with the five-member committee. They are dedicated to the Akal Takht. And that is Shiromani Akali Dal with a new leadership,' said Wadala, who recently visited the two countries. The portal calls the group Shiromani Akali Dal, with the exact spelling of the political party led by Sukhbir and registered with the Election Commission of India. On the portal, it has been pointed out that the drive is being conducted for the 'revival of Shiromani Akali Dal'. 'This membership campaign is a direct response to the historic hukamnama issued by Sri Akal Takht Sahib on December 2, 2024, which calls for unity among all Sikhs and Punjabis, adherence to the principles of Sikhism, and the revitalisation of the community's collective strength,' reads the text on the landing page of the portal. It added, "By becoming a member and participating in the Shiromani Akali Dal's membership movement, you are honouring this divine call and becoming part of a mission rooted in spiritual duty and collective responsibility.'
