Why Experienced Professionals Still Get Rejected By Top Companies

Gurpreet Kaur Mann - Career Strategist at GKM Coaching. You've got the years, the skills, the wins—yet you're hearing crickets from top companies like Meta, Apple, Amazon and Microsoft. Here's the hard truth: It's not that you're not qualified. It's that you're not aligned with how hiring works inside these companies. I've spent over 20 years in HR and coaching professionals through job searches at the highest levels. I've had behind-the-scenes conversations with recruiters from these companies and others, and they're saying what most job seekers never hear. Let's talk about why you're not getting the callback—and what you need to shift. Forget résumé hacks and keyword tricks. In my experience, massive global companies aren't using third-party applicant tracking systems (ATSs) like Taleo, Greenhouse, Workday or ZipRecruiter. Instead, they've usually built their own custom ATS to manage the millions of résumés they receive. (Yes, millions.) So, when someone says, "Make sure your résumé has keywords like 'team player' or 'rockstar engineer'"—it's not helping you here. These custom systems are scanning for: • Technical skills and project experience. • Clear examples of projects you've actually worked on (not vague phrases like "driven" or "team player"). • Scale—how big, how complex, how critical. • Titles that match the company's structure and scope. If your résumé just lists responsibilities without proof of what you've done at scale, it won't make the cut. This is the part nobody tells you. You could have been a senior manager for 15 years. But if you haven't worked at enterprise scale, it doesn't translate. One recruiter told me bluntly: "Cool, but have you built at this scale?" That's the difference. It's not about time served. It's about: • Have you solved global-level problems? • Have you led teams across multiple time zones? • Can you make high-pressure decisions with real business impact? If the answer is no, then no matter how solid your experience, you're not yet aligned with what these companies need. If you've interviewed at the same company multiple times and can't get past the technical screening, that's not bad luck. That's a you problem. And I don't say that to be harsh. I say it because this is the wake-up call most professionals need. These interviews aren't designed to trip you up. They're designed to test how well you function when things go sideways—because that's what the job will ask of you. If your response is, "I've been doing this for 20 years! I shouldn't have to do a tech screen," then you're already showing them you're not ready. These companies want people who are sharp, current and can deliver when it counts. You're not being rejected because you're bad at your job. You're being rejected because you're not showing these top companies that you can do their job. Here are some ways to shift your résumé and interview strategies: • Replace buzzwords with real examples of what you've built or led. • Speak in numbers: revenue saved, users supported, downtime prevented. • Prep for interviews like you'd prep to lead a global product rollout. And most importantly: Stop assuming your past title or tenure is enough. These companies don't care what you've been; they care what you can do. The moment you start speaking their language—scale, results, ownership—you'll stop being invisible and start being seen as one to watch.
